Is it the best solution for a htpc?

yes but only if you install tvaddons.ag

w-what does tvaddons do

I really can't find a single benefit vs PLEX

Sperging out, obviously

yes, unless you need netflix, hulu, amazon video, etc

Customization and extensive add-on library.

>using a honeypot botnet with aids infecting downloads
have fun.

I'm using the Specto addon and a bunch of others, yet can't find a way to stream CBS content -- the addons never have streams. ;/

I've been considering using kodi for a while but not actually taken the plunge due to an irrational fear of this exact thing. Do you have any evidence of kodi being infected with malware?

I have a few raspberry pis running osmc at home. Pretty comfy with the right skin - I'll partial to neon myself

even if it was riddled with spyware and adware what difference would it make

videos come on the screen you watch the videos

If my flatmate uses it on our network is my computer at risk from sharing the same router?

I've had success getting some CBS content using the WCBS addon from the Kodi repository here

If you are concerned, the smart way to run stuff like kodi with untrusted addons is to isolate it as much as possible. Don't run it on your PC. Get a cheap usff pc like an intel nuc, or a raspberry pi, or an Amlogic s905/s912 based tv box. Physically remove the wireless card, any camera or mic if there is one, etc. Connect it to your TV using an HDMI cable without ethernet channel (HEC compatibility). Run an ethernet cable directly from the box to a firewall+router+gateway where you put the TV box on its own isolated network segment with no access to any services on the firewall. Use static addressing, not DHCP. Physically remove the ethernet cable when you are not using it, or rig up some easy way to disable internet access (including DNS, etc) at the firewall. Never enter any personal info into the TV box, like google credentials, etc.

This way it cannot be used to snoop on you or your network, and wont use any bandwidth when you are not watching it.

Yes and Yes

Set up a shared mysql database on a server and you can stream and keep synced all of your content to just about every device you own.

Not sure why people are bashing Kodi.

Kodi is great as long as you don't be a retard and download stupid addons.

its not really the addons that are the problem so much as its the custom versions that have the stuff preloaded

What, Kodi itself or some shitty addons? I've never heard of Kodi containing any sort of malware, how would it? It's free and GPL licensed.

Why wouldn't you just download Kodi itself?

This requires every device to use Kodi, which is perfect for a TV but I'd say it's not the best solution for actual PC use or for touchscreen devices. You can use a media server (Emby or Plex for instance) to keep everything in sync though, both of those I mentioned have Kodi addons available, with Emby being better integrated.

people are dumb and cant figure out the whole add on repository bullshit you have to go through, so they get these premade packages that have tvaddons and all kinds of other crap ready to go, and they are full of malware and other shit

if you download kodi from the official site its 100% clean

I just download Kodi itself and watch shit from my own server, isn't this pretty much the standard way to use Kodi, or any media center application for that matter? I guess you could also have a BR player and TV tuner in your HTPC if you want to get fancy, but those should also be officially supported without shady shit that you need to download from strange places.

some are just too lazy to usenet or torrent or actually pay money for bits, and would rather just use pirate streams from addons instead.

I guess I can see people wanting to do that. It sounds like a pretty shitty option to me, I assume you have very little choice in the quality of the stream you get.

Been using Kodi for a while, but decided to switch to Plex so i can watch all my stuff on my PS4 and tablet when away from my PC. Why won't my library download metadata?

Everything is named and filed correctly because they worked in Kodi, but on Plex i can't get anything to display covers or summaries

pic related, every single move and tv show is like this

No idea, but I suppose I'd start investigating by trying to see if it happens across all devices/clients or just a particular one (i.e. does it happen on the web interface, or on Android, or on PS4, etc.)

Tried it on my phone too, it was the same

I only use Exodus. What am I missing out on?

These two are the only reasons to use it as a frontend. I'd still use one of the plex addons to handle media since Kodi is so bad with metadata management.

Personally the addons are mostly useless to me as I get any of the shows I could watch with them (which is hit or miss) off usenet in seconds. If you don't run a NAS/mediaserver of some kind a cheap STB with Kodi will be great.

quality of pirate streams can be ok, bigger issue is constant stream churn due to dmca takedowns

maybe permissions issue? did the perms change?

yes, been using it for over 10 years

I only use it for my local library, don't use any streaming addons because the quality is awful and they're mostly janky.

I use emby for remote access and a centralized database.

Anything similar to popcorn time and powder player but also lets you choose a costum player and stream torrents?

Then I suppose the problem is likely server-side.

Yeah I imagine the unreliability due to shit getting taken down must be shitty to deal with. I generally tend to go for 1080p BR rips if available, the monitor I use is 4K and as such everything gets a lot of upscaling, even with HQ algorithms some shitty 1080p

>the quality is awful and they're mostly janky

iStream works well
the quality is decent if you just want to watch a movie real quick

Why would you need some fancy algorithm when 1080p scales cleanly into 4k?

I've been running kodi/xbmc for about 4 years now. It is definitely the best solution for playing media stored on your local network (or internal storage). Plex is obviously better for remote media.

I currently have 3 firetv boxes in the house with kodi installed and I believe the firetv box is the best solution since you get Netflix and Amazon video all on the same device with the same remote. There's also a plex app if you want to access your friends' plex servers. They also go on sale all the time for $70-$80. I would not recommend the stick, it's too slow.

Also wired network is a must with kodi if you have high bitrate 1080p media, wireless won't cut it. If wireless is your only option, go with plex since it transcodes. You need a separate plex server if you're going to use a firetv with the plex app.

Also forgot to mention the two best plugins, ice films for movies and 1 channel for tv shows. Really you don't have to even download media just stream it with these plugins, but I prefer downloading with siclbeard.

>sickbeard
sickbeard development is pretty much dead, most people have moved onto sickrage or sonarr

Tried using Kodi, but when it kept corrupting my library, I dumped it. Fuck that shitty program. And it has 3 different levels of settings because god forbid we should leave the aspies out in the cold.

Yeah but it still works fine and I see no need to switch

>1080p scales cleanly into 4k
What do you mean? As in using nearest-neighbor to represent a pixel from a 1080p image as a 2x2px square on a 4K display? Nearest-neighbor is the cheapest/easiest scaler and other algorithms produce MUCH better results. Nearest-neighbor has buttloads of aliasing.

remember if you use kodi change your render method to pixel shaders and turn off dxva2 acceleration or videos will look shitty

took me forever to figure this out

Not him, but I have that setup and it works just fine

Sure it does, but I find that the Emby/Plex apps or even the Emby web player are a bit more usable than Kodi on a touchscreen and on my desktop I prefer using MPC-HC/mpv since they are also more usable on a desktop than something meant to run full-screen with a TV interface like Kodi. I personally use Emby and this way I feel like I can use a more fitting player for each platform.

ok but what's the best solution for pthc

have an mxq box will this work on that

Whats the best device to put Kodi on to view from a tv?

>Sup Forums is now arguing against user customization options
what the fuck has this place become

>thinking one retard is all of /g
fuck that shidiot, probably a shillfag marketer who knows something like kodi could never get him paid so he bashes it.

I've been playing around with it recently.

It's fucking shit.

I don't understand the point of having an extra interface between the files and me. Why wouldn't I just click on them out of my file explorer?

as far as I can tell, everything you can do with Emby/Plex you can do with Kodi for free

wew lad

If you're a sperglord with a meticulously organized collection who lives alone and sits at his PC all day, that's a great solution.

If you're not, though, you might want a remote-friendly 10-foot UI for your TV that scans all your stuff in and aggregates metadata pertaining to all of it.

if you go into the plex server you can have it scrape metadata automatically.

Its pretty good and found everything except one lord of the rings movie

You totally miss the point dumbass, Kodi is for home theater PC use, where you dont have a typical keyboard and mouse set up and browsing a standard windows style operating system on the couch is ridiculous.
How can you not understand this.

kodi's free and doesn't spy on you
if you care about such thing
>lol lmao tinfoil get a life 4 lyfe

I must be a fully retarded retard.

Why not just connect your TV to a PC? If you've already gone to the hassle of setting up a PC in your living room, why buy a wireless mouse and keyboard?

How are people usually interacting with Kodi oriented machines?

This seems like such an oldfag way of thinking... and not in the good way.

Not everything is instantly better because you're using a remote as the primary interface device.

Me and my wife use a mouse/keyboard in our living room, so does my dad, and even my fucking grandparents. It's about 1,000,000 times easier than navigating shit with a fucking remote.

literally what are you on about
these people ARE connecting their computers to their TVs
and they most likely either use some kind of media center remote or mini wireless keyboard thing like this
so instead of navigating windows explorer on your 69" tv to pen a movie in vlc, now you have an all in one package that behaves like a set top box or dvd/blu ray player

I only use Exodus on a firetv stick

what's the best kodi addon for anime

Kiss anime or exodus

free, maybe?

If you are poor, you don't have that

firejail the fuck out of it.

I use Kodi to get free shows and movies and porn. Is their a non clunky alternative that does not require me to use TV UI? I could just pirate stuff, but I like how Kodi brings all of it together

Best addon for live tv?

Ive never had the need of a mediaplayer of any kind since I've always had my pc close to my tv setup.

But now that my parents want a media player, what would be the best solution? They are kinda tech illiterate so it'd be nice with something that can be controlled via the tv on a remote.
I believe they have a mid tier asus router that had some features for streaming content now that I think of it..

I have a 260/100 connection and they have 100/100 so transfering data will be easy.

plex is retard simple, but you have to make sure the media libraries are set up right.

>he doesn't know he can use Plex as a backend and use Kodi as a client
>he doesn't have his entire media library across every single device with progress syncing
>he doesn't own a 55" OLED TV with CEC enabled
>he doesn't navigate Kodi with the TV remote

So it's just a matter of having a media player that supports plex and an IR remote then, on their end.

Thanks.

i got it working great with Roku, and fire sticks.

and on my PS3, and 360. the PS3 is at my sisters house using her network, but can access my media library which amazed her and my little nephew. he now has all the 80's and 90's cartoons, movies, and tv i grew up on, and his current kid shows, and music. i have 2 tb of .mp3's not including audiobooks, or language instruction stuff.
