What went wrong with tablets..?

What went wrong with tablets..?

Oversized phones. Shit.

Nothing, now that the hype is down only those who really need it have one.

What is wrong with that one? Active stylii are a good great thing.

The vast majority of tablets today are defective by design because they make use of digital restriction management technology.

a tablet is only worth for PDFs, movies and Visual Novels( wich is the perfect platform since pretty much every VN doesnt even use keyboard)

Touch screens are a meme. Thanks steve jobs.

Good desktop replacement for children and the elderly and any computer illiterate for that matter. For everyone else its just a big phone that doesn't make phone calls.

mine is basically a dedicated mango machine

The point is the uses are limited and tablets get hot after a few hours of use , well in my experince anyway.

they should of added keyboard from the get go
the thing is tablets are slow and have little or no upgrade options
the fact that the first models didn't have right click it was a bad move IMO.

but outside of users like this not much more.

Nothing. Tablet is my favorite form factor.

I have an iPad Pro, and I use it for almost everything. They're great for web browsing, for doing homework, for consuming music, video, and books (especially comics!). The active stylus in particular is a huge boon to productivity, as doing math with a keyboard *sucks*, and so does sketching out diagrams with a mouse.

Another cool thing about it is that I can charge it from a USB power bank. Fuck your slice batteries, I can carry exactly as much extra power as I think I'm going to need that day/trip/whatever, and I can buy more capacity literally anywhere.

Also, it has LTE, which is handy as fuck and a fairly uncommon trait on laptops.

They were overhyped. Normies though everyone needed to have one when in reality a small minority of people actually have a use for them.

Anything unimportant enough to not need a keyboard might as well be done on a phone, anything important enough to need a keyboard is better done on a laptop.

You'd be surprised how well the on-screen keyboard works on the iPad Pro. Touch typing is relatively feasible, because the keyboard is approximately full-size in landscape.

I have a ipad air 2 and typing on it not even in ballpark as an actual keyboard, making it a little bigger in the 12.9" version of the ipad pro isn't going to make a difference.

They have the disadvantages of a phone without the advantages of a laptop

>a little bigger

It's literally twice the size. I owned an iPad Air 2 before this, too, and I agree, it wasn't the same.

>12.9" is twice big as 9.7"

Do you not understand how screen size is measured?

Go to the Apple display at your local electronics store. Take the iPad Air 2, turn it sideways, and hold it up to the iPad Pro. You will see that it is almost exactly half the physical size.

Whats a good tablet that can handle graphic intensive games well?

You want a Shield Tablet, or a Surface Pro/Book, though the latter aren't really "tablets". I say that because, in the example of the Surface Book, you'd be able to play for about 45 minutes in tablet mode before the thing kicked.

The ipad air 2 is 9.4" by 6.67", the 12.9" ipad pro is 12.04" by 8.69", that's not even close to half the size.

This is pointless anyway because the size is not the problem, it's that a touch screen keyboard is not as good as a actually good real keyboard. Keyboards vary in quality, but even a shitty chiclet keyboard is better than a touch screen.

Sure, it's not as 'good', but it does get the job done. I'm typing this very post on mine, and I'm not even looking at the keys. And the form factor comes with other distinct benefits, like fewer moving parts leading to fewer points of failure. It's also thinner and lighter, and the keyboard isn't there when you don't need it to be.

An ipad can be bearable for a few paragraphs, but no one wants to write pages of text on a touch screen because it's inferior.

For what it's worth, I'll agree on that. I do have the Smart Keyboard for my iPad. But I don't always need to type more than a few paragraphs, and it's nice that, when I'm not in need of it, I can pull off the keyboard and leave it in my bag or at home.

Also, in lecture halls, it's a lot less disruptive to have your keyboard parallel to your display as opposed to the screen sitting perpendicular. So I use it that way a lot.

They were invented.

Too expensive. I just want want one with expandable storage and at least 9 american inches 1080p screen for less than $200.

Using my tablet right now :')

Tablets suck because they have very few legitimate uses.

Want something that just slides in your pocket? You buy a phone.
Want something bigger that you have to carry? Well, you can buy a oversized phone, or you can buy a laptop running a real OS with a real keyboard, lots of ports, storage, etc. Why the fuck would you buy a tablet when it's shit in comparison?

I have one for the sole purpose of reading mango on the bed. inb4 eink shit, there's colored stuff all the time and colored eink is still retardedly expensive.

This
you can buy a surprisingly good 8 inch tablet running win10 and android for ~$90 US which is waayy cheaper than anything E-Ink and is also much more useful

>when it's shit by comparison?

Because it's not necessarily "shit". Having an iPad as my daily driver makes me almost immune to common attacks, including drive-by malware and USB attacks. It's also extremely thin, silent, energy-efficient, has a phenomenal display, charges over USB (again, this means it's chargeable via commodity USB power banks), allows me to take handwritten notes, has a camera as good as the one on the iPhone 6S, and has LTE.

How many laptops can you point to that display even half of those qualities simultaneously?

>muh mobile device which has an OS with a significant market share, which charges a premium for stupid people
>is immune to "attacks"
you're retarded, this shit syncs and uses wifi, and that's all it really needs to compromise the rest of your devices.

you can easily replace the keyboard/screen with a touchscreen and turn your laptop into a tablet.
laptops are thin and easy as fuck to carry around, with screens that aren't so small it's worthless to do anything on.
has far more ports, wifi, and had bluetooth/actual usb for high quality mics/cameras, lte dongles etc not to mention far greater storage space and expansion ports, ability to use actual programs instead of gimmicks, full control over the software
why am i explaining this shit to a stupid faggot like yourself.

Absolutely nothing
Windows tablets will soon kill laptops
I don't get idea of Android tablets and ipads tho. Literally overgrown phones

big corp killing the "smallphone=better phone" maymay. notice how all flagshipphones are now uncomfortably huge?

I've downloaded a bunch of videos and copied them to my Fire HD 8 and they play fine, just that the media player is shit.

that's only limited by software dev's and their epic lazyness to do anything fundamental its nothing to do with the hardware.

software can be limited or not limited I mean if a 25MHz i486 can run a windows 3.1 system with all the function that goes with in theroy all should

the proble is things like windows 10 are complex and require alot of functions
the keyboard can give you look of function

but like others have said touch pad works as keyboards but the counter arguement is its not sentive and smart enough to have more than a few gestures for example there is not even one foe saving files on a touch screen or taking a screenshot or viewing task mannger to few problems or shut down problem programs that have had a runtime error and freeze

yet all these things you can do on the keyboard assuming you know all the shortcut

In theroy it should be possiable for any system to run any problem as long as they can use X86 code or at least work in a simular way x86 does.

alot of programers think that underlying biniary code can't get the same answer yet its been proven many times that data is just 1 and 0 and doesn't depend on architecture at all.

Its just that lazy programers don't like making new formuale to x86
as as proven today ARM has already surpased that.

tablets are underpowered because of run away heat and batteries this is a power issue

its another reason why x86 failed because its heat out weighed the compute power

most atom x86 multi core bay trail are no more powerful than a celeron P4 era cpu running at 2.6Ghz

mean while the Arm processor is cooler and running a little faster but bottle necked by clock and its instruction set which is a patch work of other instruction sets

as you can see ARM will easliy be with in laptop spec with in 2 to 10 years or so now that it can run windows 10 on a emulator its only a matter of time, R&D and money to get to the next stage. Con....

The tablet market is growing, albeit getting more confusing at the same time. Everyone is so used with Apple's definition of tablets, the iPad. Nowadays, Windows 10 based tablets are dominating, largely in the form of convertibles. The popular Surface line would be considered by most as a laptop/convertible, but it really just functions as a really pro tablet.

>the keyboard can give you look of function
Lot

anyway
software is not advanced as alot of people claim they only thing it has been doing is getting more bloated with alot of unnessary features

tablets only have one input most of the time
but
i think its more faster to have a keyboad and mouse its not like touch pad and its more senitive and doesn't dull over time like a tablet does.
complex gestures and complex function is not possiable on a tablet based on its limited guestures and limited speed in which typing naturally AKA qwerty keyboard typeing allows
and it never feels natural to type on glass over real buttons when not looking at what you are doing.

this is based on my experince alone with tablets.

this doesn't say tablets can't do most every day tasks i just think there is too many limitations to today's compute power and complexaty

tablets need to be more complex in software then now.
and not be fully dependant on wifi for example

>Using an ipad makes me immune to attacks
>Can get rooted by receiving a picture spammed by a bot through imessage

ha. ha. ha. Those Apple users, right?

>Can get rooted by receiving a picture spammed by a bot through imessage
Dont worry, thats just a feature

My tablet is a glorified pdf reader. It lets me read large documents without needing to carry around a heavy binder or laptop.
