Yeah indeed since you get reading instructions for the course book. But the lectures goes through the material in the book and it's an excellent opportunity to have the lecturer explain. I found that attending lectures, taking notes by hand and just quickly read through the associated chapter was enough.

I found the lectures to be more time efficient but I guess experience varies. It was a great way to build friendship and contacts. University/college is also more or less the last time in your life where you can make life lasting friendship with people of similar interests. When people settle down with family they have no time to make new friends.
