/rg/ Router General

Your router tier edition
what router you should get depending on your internet and inter-computer connectivity.
1 Mbps - what are you doing here no one want to help you

10 Mbps - Should we help the poor aussie with a router?

30Mbps - lucky aussie

-50 Mbps -your average what router should you get

100 Mbps - above average

200 Mbps you a criminal pirating or something? Why you need so much speed
* I do not condone act of robbery or criminal violence by ship- or boat-borne attackers upon another ship

1Gbps - lucky fag,also enjoy google botnet

Ubiquiti vs Mikrotik

Ubiquiti for Ap, Mikrotik for routers is the general consensus.

Has anyone tried mikrotik Hap?

Is there a such thing as a quiet 1u computer? I want something to run pfSense on. It does not need to be powerful, an Atom or one of those J1900 integrated Celerons would be plenty, but everything I've heard is that all 1u PSUs are 250+ watts and therefore they're all loud, because of those tiny little 40mm fans.

>Is there a such thing as a quiet 1u computer?
Yea, if the TDP is low enough.

You could just use a picoPSU instead, but a fanless flex atx PSU did exist at one point.

Get a NUC.

get a Watchguard Firebox

Recommendations for 4GLTE (Verizon) router? Stuck in the middle of Fucking Nowhere, Idaho and USGS has me on an unlimited plan while I'm out here for the next 3 years.

>10 Mbps - Should we help the poor aussie with a router?
FUCKIN CUNT

Currently in the process of making a quality home network for when the gubberment realizes it fucked up and has to spend double money to fix its mixed technology shit.

Jesus christ shit is spensive here, could just about buy from the US and ship here for less.

>tfw 400mbps DL
>25mbps UL
Feelsbadman

>for when the gubberment realizes it fucked up
It'll never happen user. At best you can expect the shitty 25Mbit NBN connection for the moderate future, unless you shell out for some special connection in which case 5G will probably end up being cheaper and faster anyway when it comes out.

Archer c7 masterrace. Stable 1gbps speed on lan and around 200 mbps on phone

>tfw I have a c7 v1 and no firmware works on it properlly untill I shell out 50$ for a new wifi card.

Life is hell.

Any good sources for learning all there is to know about networking hardware?

568A or 568B?

Old thread:

>a WAN is a large collection of LANs
>a WAN is a network/link which isn't part of any LAN

Which one is correct? Both seem to be in use, but they are kinda contradictory. So is a WAN all of the networks in a larger area together, or is a WAN just a single ISP/backbone network?

Can I test wifi router speed and reach with a smart phone? What's the best way to go about doing it?

Is it normal for a Cisco router to print "Upgrade ROMMON initialized" (or "Readonly ROMMON initialized" if the default one is selected) just before loading the IOS from flash, or is this an indication that something is wrong?

Why would you need that shit? Its almost all empty. Youll never need or use it.

Why is this thread dead basically? Hardly anyone posts here at all.

Everyone's off to shit consumer garbage threads. Inb4 archived/10.

There are only so many generals a board can handle, and you faggots have pushed Sup Forums to it's threshold. Deal faggot.

What are the best practices for making your own Ethernet (preferably gigabit-compatible) cables? What are the common mistakes to avoid?

Also, what is the thingy marked in red at the tip of the wire stripper in pic related? What is it for?

Then go make a /gsg/ "Generals Suck General". Oh wait.

anything under 100mbps is shit. modern computers have integrated nics that can do 1gbps

$50 spread out over a year is less than $5 a month. Buy the fucking thing you luddite

Punch for doing phone or data terminations. But if you're gonna do more than a few punches PLEASE do yourself a favor and pick up an impact tool!

Also, make sure that the jacket goes inside the connector, all the pins are shoved well into the connector, and that it's tight. Give it a good tug once you crimp and if there's even a little movement redo it. If it's loose now it's not gonna make it... Happy terminations, my man

my default router doesn't let me change default dns settings (want to get pi hole network wide) so I'm thinking of putting my router in modem mode and buying a new router, what's a good under £100 router that I can easily put openWRT on? my speeds are 120Mbps also am I correct in assuming I plug the new router into the modem mode router using ethernet then just connect or plug into the new router? I don't have to fuck around and ring my ISP or anything?

>Punch for doing phone or data terminations. But if you're gonna do more than a few punches PLEASE do yourself a favor and pick up an impact tool!

Is this relevant to making patch cables, or terminating cables in wall sockets or inside patch panels?

>if there's even a little movement redo it
I suppose the only way would be to start from the beginning and use another 8P8C terminator? There's no way to fix anything once the plug has been crimped?

Bump.

Bump. Why nobody posts here? It's the router general, dammit.

Mexico here we have "fiber" to the home, and are cap is still 100mpbs. It is just a giant meme. You can have the most up to date internet tech to people homes, but if your infrastructure is still copper prepare for low as fuck speeds

>router general
>no Cisco networking equipment has been posted
that has to change

Can you answer this question?

RB2011 for routing and AP AC Lite for WiFi here. Feelsgoodman.jpg

but are you not being strong armed to use ubiquity proprietary PoE injection?

>people only have like 5 things wired and do not need routers, switches

It must have detected your trip code. Try posting without one, it might work fine after that

Yes. All 3 of my 2821s print that.

So I'm going to be getting gigabit fiber sometime in mid 2017 and my current openwrt router isn't going to be able to route gigabit speeds. I've been thinking of running vyos in a vm but I've always been heaitant on running such a critical service on not metal. Are there any decent affordable routers that can actually do gigabit routing (not just link up at gig speeds)?
Edgerouter pro looks like it might work but I saw it mentioned somewhere that it slows down once you stray from functions that are compatible with hardware offload.
Thoughts?

Anyone running an OpenVPN server on a hEX? Could it hit 100Mbps over the tunnel?

NSA, pls go

Do yourself a favor and get a decently powerful box with two intel gigabit nics for pfsense.

Gigabit NICs don't have dedicated switching fiber.

>Gigabit NICs don't have dedicated switching fiber.
What did he mean by this?

I was afraid it would come to this...
I'm a cheap bastard and 've got a couple of broadcom nics... no idea how they stack up vs intel though

THis faggot thinks his ISP would allow him to use his SFP transievers with their chink proprietary fiber protocol. Haha veri fani

Broadcom is fine. They made the integrated NIC chipsets for most of servers available from HP, Dell, IBM, etc.
The fuck are you talking about, dude?

what would be the minimum x86 cpu requirement for routing gigabit anyway?
People always throw around the words "just build a box" but that usually results in something ridiculously overspecced.

Think he thinks a router has to have the Gpon to act like a modem?

Baytrail Atom
I don't think any home network gateway integrates an ONT, ONTs are not CPE.

$300 nuc/amd box with 3 giga ethernets

>Realtek NICs
No

>posts old junk
It's worthless consumes too much power to even run at home ( unless trying to get Cisco knowledge )

>old junk
Sure, it may not be up to par with the latest $1,000+ Cisco equipment but it's still more capable than most home routers and switches

I have it for practicing for certifications anyways

Cradlepoint

Do any of u network faggots know anything about tunnelling an Android 6.0.1 hotspot through an OpenVPN connection on the phone? My carrier is trying to jew me on my "unlimited" LTE plan.

I was told that this code should route everything through the network, but I am having problems connecting.:

iptables -t filter -F FORWARD
iptables -t nat -F POSTROUTING
iptables -t filter -I FORWARD -j ACCEPT
iptables -t nat -I POSTROUTING -j MASQUERADE
ip rule add from 192.168.43.0/24 lookup 61
ip route add default dev tun0 scope link table 61
ip route add 192.168.43.0/24 dev wlan0 scope link table 61
ip route add broadcast 255.255.255.255 dev wlan0 scope link table 61

Anyone know to disable android from reporting that the hotspot is being used, and/or how to route traffic through the VPN?

Agree, Cradlepoint is the brand you want to be looking at. There are some that can accept a standard SIM card and they really have some awesome capabilities for a little box. Just depending on how tinfoil hat you are, turn off the cloud managed portions of them.

Fuck these shills. Sierra Wireless is waaayy better hardware.
