Just found out WhatsApp was developed by Facebook

WTF I thought it was supposed to be relatively safe.

Is there ANY messaging app safe from the machine?

Have you been living under a rock for the past 16 months?

i think it's safe to assume everything you send over the internet is either logged or analyzed at the very least by the app you used

Internet Relay Chat

It was bought by facebook two years ago, not originally developed by them

There are several "secure" apps, but nobody uses them (no, Telegram is not secure and Signal depends on Google blobs)

what a clever way to not make a point

I guess you could say that.

Not very good for private messaging innit user

Bitmessage, Tox, i2p.
Just fucking encrypt your data.

lol who cares about security NERD #yolo

Email+PGP

>Telegram is not secure
where is the proofs

Volodymir, pls go.

GNU Ring

You can get it in fdroid too

This place gets more retarded every day.

they used to store logs on simple unencrypted text files but no longer

Anyone with imsi catcher or with authority to access a cell operator data can intercept your login sms code and fuck you up, unless you have 2FA, which is disabled by default.
Guess where it happened first? (Pro tip: Russia)

>It was bought by facebook two years ago, not originally developed by them
this.

also how the fuck does someone come to Sup Forums this clueless? why are mods not just banning these people? can we not all agree that people like the OP don't belong here?

Use Signal, anyone who thinks using GCM matters is like a full fledged retard

Signal
Wire

>he didn't train a bird to trade messages with his bros
Enjoy being just another cog in the machine, brother.

Nah, it was bought by facebook when it was already a big company.

Also there are many good messaging services that respect privacy.

>t. elegram shill

>Not very good for private mesaging
IRC over SSL has been a thing for 10 years now.

Telegram is really stupid.

I'm using it because a friend talked me into it, but the way they share data is really ugly. Basically EVERBODY that has your phone number and Telegram installed will see that you created an account. I don't like this at all.

It's also dumb how you have to have a phone to log in every single time.

Maybe people come here to stop being clueless and learn. They can't if they're banned.

...

Since when did Ring become a GNU project, I thought it was something SFL made?

Signal only uses Google play services for a single startup hook that doesn't release any info, and there are plans to add a patch to use websocket for the same hook if Google stuff isn't installed.

isn't a good encryption method implemented into whatsapp?

iMessage

Someone give me the facts behind these messenger type apps such as FBs apps and skype

Dont use them myself but what makes them bad?

For normal people, use Signal. Normal people have Google installed.
For more slightly more technical or less lazy friends, use Conversations. Same as signal but decentrualized

Companies with a history of bad ethics and privacy

Yes, but fb knows who you talk to at what time and how often, etc... encryption has less effect when you knows a persons social graph

Corporations affect more people and are more important in our lives than any given citizen.

It makes tons of sense that hurting a corporation gets society angrier than helping them. They are the stewards of progress.

Use WeChat

>what a clever way to not make a point
Its true tho. The internet isnt made for privacy.

>Internet Relay Chat
Good but not modern.

>Email+PGP
Even security experts are now giving up on pgp for signal

>GNU Ring
>You can get it in fdroid too
Good. But they dont look like aiming for your average user like whatsapp is. Haven't checked their crypto but being serverless means its hard for mobile users who's network activity changes a lot so messages may be lost. Havnt tested this.

Not good for private messaging aka dont trust any server operator

I did when i was in China.

corporations should be watched and regulated because they can be quite evil since they are only loyal to their profit-margins

I've been using signal, it's pretty good imho

>can't use wihout g services

plz, even if the app per se is secure, why do I have to use a botnetted phone?

iirc Google services has root access so their features are going to be better. There's a nonbotnetted version of google you can install if you flash it, but the Signal devs don't expect people the majority of people doing that and continue to use the phone with botnet google installed. If you wrote a nonbotnet push features with 0 disadvantages then the devs might use it.
