I'm living on the edge using a Seagate 8TB Archive drive.

hello here are my hard drives

...

I would like to get 4TB, what do you guys recommend?

I hope you can die in peace now

SSDx2 -> RAID 0 SSDs
DATA/BACKUP -> USB Drive plugged into my server

hello

I'm using HGST NAS

Looking to get a mid-range 2TB. There are too many conflicting opinions out there and I can't decide
Can some one help or direct me to a trustworthy review site?

I only want it to store my JAVS and TV Shows though so performance/speed is not really a primary thing I just want space to store stuff I rarely use.

...

Sup Forums is a trustworthy review site

WD Blue or Seagate Barracuda. Pick the brand that you prefer, they're pretty much identical in every way.

>b-b-but muh durability
It literally does not matter. Standard desktop storage use will not stress the drives much at all. All drives will eventually fail, as long as you have backups it'll just be a minor inconvinience. Don't pay extra for meme server drives unless you stress the drives hard or downtime costs money for you.

Aren't those shingled?

>as long as you have backups it'll just be a minor inconvinience

but don't people buy those kind of drives to store their backup on them?

I have 3 cases worth of 2 - 4TB disks, ask me anything.

Do you mind shipping me 4x4TB drives?

How do you access them?

memed on

>people on Sup Forums use windows 10

jesus christ how horrifying

8 are in a RAID, some get swapped through a USB SATA dock for backup as a virtual tape library, the rest are unused right now. some day when i have more money ill get around to buying some 4U super micro chassis with SAS expanders and bring them online.

yes i would mind, go get a job in a data center and then you can pull disks out of servers and start your own collection

Not him but I'm looking for a 4tb

Are the WD reds any better in terms of life than the blues?

>>b-b-but muh durability
It actually does, enterprise class disks have a order of magnitude better non-recoverable read error rates. go read a data sheet sometime you tard.

I have no CP to hide, so... :^)

I need to rob some unused HDDs from work, there's a few 1TB WD Blue's I've got my eye on.

how can you possibly fill more than 1tb

private trackers

You're going to risk getting fired and arrested for theft for a few $40 USD HDDs?

I'm actually a sysadmin and I'm harvesting every drive I can get.

worst case, they make up good magnets on the fridge.

Durability does matter, I don't want to have to buy a new HDD every few years and what am I meant to back up onto if standard HDDs "all eventually fail"?

Are 3TB Toshiba HDDs decent? They currently have the best $/GB next to Seagate and I have heard enough horror stories about Seagate to stay clear.

...

...

How the fuck is this a thing? You're just chatting shit about your hard drives? Jesus christ.

whats the big deal

Just a bit autistic

Welcome to Sup Forums.

I have 2 other 128gb flash drives. I ought to buy another HDD for more steam game storage. Z is almost entirely games.

You're the most autistic person in the thread, judging by your drive names

I'm just a weeb, not autistic.

Both.

you care about shakugan no shana, your argument is invalid

>Z is almost entirely games.
step up your game

>inb4 some autist claims its a shoop because of the size on disk
Its on a Server 2016 SMB share which has dedup enabled, and windows can't properly calculate the actual file size because of it; size on disk is just the size of files which havent been processed by dedup

This is my list of drives and such currently attached to this computer

>People on Sup Forums actually use Winblows 10
Shame
Shame
Shame

LOLOL am I part of the faggot group now?

how the fuck do you even read this shit

looks like he used the -h flag which makes it human readable. Might have been smart to add -x tmpfs too

disgusting

What command is this? fdisk -l? mount? lsblk?

>order hard drive
>hard drive comes busted
>dad returns it
>decides not to buy another

and thats why I'm stuck with 118 gb of SSD which is really a 100 after all the reserved space for the system

SSD fag here, sorry.

Eh...

see

>3 GiG o' RAM
lol poorfag

Planning on getting a 500gb samsung evo 850 to replace it. Windows really doesn't run well on a HDD.

H-hello

...

Modest but gets the job done. Oh and System Volume Information takes up around 150gb of the W:/ drive. I'm lazy.

here
128GB (119GiB) is good enough for most people's needs.
In my case after removing one VM hdd file, all music and gaymes there is entire 100GiB of free space left.

evo 850 512gb partitioned, and hgst 2tb

Have 2 HDDs with a copy of the same shit.
One dyes immediately buy a new one and copy.

Never use RAID its cancer.
Unless you want to use RAID 0 its only a faster JBOD.

How does this sound as an idea?
I have three 1TB hard disks to store 2TB of data.
Half on the first, half on the second, and the third is what I'd call a "parity drive" that allows errors to be corrected, or if a drive fails for all the data to be recovered.
Here's how it works:
For every nth bit on disks A and B, the nth bit on C will be the modulus of the difference of A and B, allowing full data recovery. For example, if the two bits on A and B read 00 or 11, then C has 0; 01 or 10 records 1. So long as two disks are functional full data recovery is possible.

Does this sound like a good idea for archiving data? Is this something that is already done?

why partition?

>2017-a bit
>multiple logical disks

>System Volume Information takes up around 150gb of the W:/ drive

WHYs_internally.jpg

Yes, this is called RAID 5. Calculate two independent pairities and you can withstand two drive failures, this is RAID 6.

mdadm on Linux can do this, as can ZFS. Btrfs can but you shouldn't use it because it's still buggy.

Stupid.
Will suffer RAID failure.
If one bit gets demagnetized the whole RAID shit fails with no possibility of coming back.

RAID and other technologies can deal with full HDD/SSD failure where one drive reports its dead.
If the data becomes inconsistent its fucked and knows not what to do.

I have 2 x 8TB HDDs where they are mirrors of one another.

So effectively I have 8TB.

I have no idea how to show it do to my set up, I can take a photo of the HDDs however it sounds pointless.

>I have no idea how to show it do to my set up
don't tell me you fell for the hardware RAID meme

the rest of the terabyte is the linux partition

>what is scrubbing?

Even on Sup Forums, normies come bullying us, leave us alone.

What's a good cheap SSD?

...

850 evo

...

How can those drives all be equally full? really weird

That's the same NAS.

No its unplugged from the computer.
Both HDDs are plugged in only at the same time when they are mirrored.

r8 pls

27.1/10

Can you ever have too much storage or will you just fill whatever you have with increasingly high quality media files?

how do you possibly have a several PB archive drive

>10.17

drakestanza.jpg

>how can you possibly fill more than 1tb
Oh let me sing you the song of my people
Be me.
Have a constant backup of internet servers that interest me with web bots and shit.

people who know this constantly say
>You are paranoid user
>You are sick user
>Stop hording LOL
Me pokerface.jpg

Then all of a sudden their fav YT channel gets purged or some autist realizes how autistic the stuff was he posted and deletes it. Also DMCA and greed based purges.
These morons have no access to this material and cry.

I deliciously sip their tears and show off my material, I'm not going to give it to them
>I'm paranoid
>I'm a hoarder
>I need help
>your tears of unfathomable sadness are delicious
This is all I tell these fucks.

The pure joy of this is unimaginable. Trust me its like a drug to see these fucks in this situation.

Installing all the games you own on steam.

...

>not getting all the benefits of Linux in windows...

this is what I do with all of my old drives

cygwin's fork() considered harmful and slow
wsl considered correct native solution for now

Thousands of 2tb drives
In the process of building a San that will make that look like a fucking joke.

are you me from the future

teach me your doings

What OS is this?

Don't really differentiate my hard drives, but I got Q recently so I could move off all of the pictures i had in my dl folder in E.

12TB file server and a 500gb web server

>2009 WD black finally starts making clicking sounds this year
got all the shit i care off of it and now i dont care if it fails
she served me well boys

i think im gonna get a 250gig 850 EVO to replace it since im only using about 100gigs for steam games

are the WD SSD's any good? or are the samsung SSD's still the GOAT?
