If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or Mac.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Look here

samefag

samefag

yeah. your point though? mac >>>>> windows >>> Linux

GNU/Linux*

if you include gnu it would be like this:
Mac >>>>>>>>>>>> Windows >>> Linux >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> gnu

>a closed-architecture system made for hipsters and Starbucks-cucks

>a closed-source system that don't respect your privacy and it's not afraid to tell that they track your porn fetishes

>how-cucked-is-each project

yeah, it's least cucked to most cucked like this:
least cucked -----> most cucked
didn't even read your post. nice try though

>comparing malware to a kernel
do you even tech, friend

>do you even
>friend
lmao. stay mad, linkek

Hello guys, I'm searching for "/fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread".

hey, this is the Mac OS thread now. you lintards can fuck off.

wrong site, famine

What's some good software to check for rootkits and other crap for linux?

linuxbabby here, so far so good I guess

how do I unpack and install a .tar.xz file?

>install a .tar.xz file
are you using slack?

no, debian jessie

just trying to setup an internet browser (iridium) other than firefox

well I managed to do the first part and unpacked it into a folder, but now I'm now sure how to compile and install it since there's no READ ME file

how would you compile and install this?

linux? uninstall that shit right now.

There used to be a thing called chkrootkit, but I overcame my windows legacy paranoia years ago.

You should be using you're package manager.
>babby

Why is NetworkManager such a steaming pile? I guess I haven't completely ruled out other things, but this is getting silly.

Sometimes when I log in (Arch, i3) it takes an extra five-ten seconds for i3bar to show up, and whenever that happens Networkmanager won't connect, even after restarting the service. the log doesn't give anything useful either, just something like authenticating -> disconnected.
I can't think of anywhere else to look for error messages.

never had a single problem with it. you might wanna try a non-pleb distro first

>dell latitude
>ubuntu 16.04
>sound crackling when it needs to play a sound after a longer time of silence
>hibernate/suspend kills the network manager so I have to restart it each time I wake up my laptop

thanks I guess. Anyone else got the same problems? it's pretty annoying.

Hey /fglt/,

Is there anyway to implement rice-gaps when tiling in xfce/xfwm?

use a superior wm

does anybody use a tv tuner card with linux? Which one is the best to buy with good linux compatibility? I would like to use mpv to actually view the channels but looking on the arch wiki it seems somewhat complicated. Apparenly I do this first:

w_scan -ft -c [country_code] -M > ~/.config/mpv/channels.conf

but then what ?

Taking a GNU/Linux class at community college for my degree requirement. I've been on Sup Forums for years but don't know shit about Linux. What should I read to get a head start on the class so I don't seem like a pleb?

install gentoo

if you're hardcore
ubuntu otherwise
use vimtutor, install something from github

Can I do all this on a virtual machine so I don't fuck with my main computer? I used them in my last class for some things

i've never liked the things, but sure

Used to be able to background startup processes just by adding a & to the startup script command. Sorry, haven't used arch for a couple years.
Don't know how to do it using systemd though.
Try searching the wiki or google for backgrounding a startup process.

yes, and if you want to get a little more in depth but still have an easy install, go arch with architect installer

You might try that on your .config/i3/config

or i3bar config

>install *buntu
>insufferable blips and crackling when I listen to anything
>take it as a given that I'll need to edit a config file upon installing a distro to prevent it

>install opensuse
>almost no issues whatsoever with sound - still the occasional glitch but far less frequent

Just wondering - why is opensuse better with this? It's tumbleweed I'm using, is it newer packages or something else?

Well the system doesn't tie it to i3, I don't see how tying it to it would help.
Looking at the startup plot, rfkill might be something.

probably that. Your sound driver setup might be odd.

systemd starts the service. But you may be able to background the applet loading in your status bar.

I already have that, but I don't usually start it since i3bar has an indicator.

...

Happy GNU/Year, faggots.

y-you too

remove this shit from my year. i don't want it anywhere near me

I'm guessing that's toe jam flavoured?

should "he" really be eating this much?

>""he""

yeah, meant to say """"""he"""""" there sorry

im sure you meant """"""""""""he""""""""""""

yeah... thanks mate i forgot to hold the key down for a little longer

In a few weeks there is a possibility that under certain ritualistic circumstances GNU will be wiped from the face of this planet. I am trying to achieve this as we speak

> install
tar -xvf filename.tar.gz
cd filename
autoreconf
sh ./configure
make
sudo make install
> uninstall
navigate to directory
sudo make uninstall
But i strongly recommend you to use package manager for everything you build not only for experimental purpose. You'll understand later why it is best possible approach.

Forgot code tag. Fuck.

pssh, get on my level.
>continuously emailed Trump's campaign about banning import of anime and manga, and criminalizing possession.
>used examples like madthadd and deviantart links.
>few times I received a "our staff will look into this" dismissive reply.

Hopefully my efforts aren't in vain

how long till merifats have new yea?

idk. i'm pretty cool myself and i've already been in it for a quite a while now. i'm currently on a military base where we are planning something big soon hehe...

happy gnu ear fgltard

fuck off nomalfag

i watched so much anime today i'm feeling kinda strange. what is a good distro to deal with this?

arch and gentoo

im running Arch btw

what do you think i was watching the animations on?

Is this an anime thread?

no, fuck off

Huh? There are posts about anime here. Which must mean it's an anime + distros thread. Am I wrong?

yes

Do you reply because you're retarded?

Would you mind telling me why?

Huh!? But there are posts about anime here?

yes

Good thead.

indeed a good thead

good thead is best thead

I recently got a 2015 Retina 13" MacBook Pro. What's a good Linux distro that doesn't look like shit with good battery life and has built in scaling for Retina without fucking with HiDpi. Elementary OS scaled fine but I couldn't get Wi-Fi to work for shit. Manjaro XFCE was fine with wifi but HiDpi wouldn't work. Pls help, OSX is killing me.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Get an Ubuntu flavor.

I was trying to refrain from this because it's seen as a "kiddie" OS, but looks like it's time to give in. Thanks! How's the learning curve after using Manjaro for about a year?

gnu is shite though. nobody cares about that piece of trash

Ubuntu is the best first choice for IDK-waht-to-install, bro, "kiddie" OS is something retarded like Linux Mint that looks compelling but is trash under the hood. Canonical is a trash company, but they know what they are doing. Manjaro has a bad repotation aswell, but it's not as bad ad Linux Mint

@58264801
guess you lost on your way to

hmm... wait a sec

wants kernel

I'd like to have a hotkey-combination that posts pre-defined text blocks. So, for example, if I want to have the interjection pasta pasted on ctrl+alt+t, what would be the best solution?

install windows

its in the control panel

thats actually interesting, I tried to do this a while back with xbindkeys and xsel (loading pasta into clipboard) and pasted it with xdotools, but it was simply shit

/r/ing solution aswell

Friendly thead. Which means: No malware recommendations.

your stupid os can't do that yet. better switch to windows.
windows is based. fuck off with your hobbyist trash OS
