the difference is that Win7 isn't complete trash like Win98
Give me one actual reason to upgrade from Windows 7.
protip: you can't
>weirdo
the only weirdo around here is the person who seems to care way too much about what OS other people are using
smells like shill
Security features?
Drivers?
Less disk space used?
What is so bad about the new version of X that isn't bad about the old version of X?
security features? botnet
drivers? as soon as my graphics card's drivers stop supporting windows 7 i'll switch
disk space? only getting cheaper
there are people are still using XP, you know
>What is so bad about the new version of X that isn't bad about the old version of X?
A fuckload of things, which we go over every damn day.
windows 7 tryhards are pathetic
Security features? Like Windows Hello and Device Guard? Most of these features are only available on enterprise or require TPM which many PCs don't have. Virtualization-based security for example require Windows 10 Enterprise, LTSB or Education. Windows Hello requires a suitable webcam.
Drivers? I have Broadcom Wifi cards that cannot be detected in device manager in RS1. Windows XP and 7 have no such problems.
Less disk space used? What? WIMBoot? Not everyone uses WIMBoot. WES7 can take less space than Windows 10 LTSB.
The only decent version would be the 2015 LTSB, which is actually stable in my experience. CB/CBB and 2016 LTSB/Server 2016 are beta-grade.
Wait until your precious Win32 is slowly phased out for UWP like they did DOS
>there are a significant number of people on this board born after 1998 who had 7 as their first OS
The thing is,
98SE to XP changed a lot. Enough that there were many compatibility issues and it ran like trash on older hardware. I still remember 2 minute boot times with it.
XP to 7 was the same. 7 was improved Vista, and Vista left a really shitty taste on everyone's mouth. Also 32 bit versions weren't as good. Same thing with hardware and compatibility issues. XP was blazing fast and really easy to customize.
7 to 10 though is just a matter of more services over the same system. There are not many computers out there that work real fast with 7 and slow with Windows 10. Compatibility issues are rare to non existent except for very, very specific hardware. There aren't enough convincing arguments for some people to switch or stay on whichever system of the two. With windows 7 you gain a tiny bit more control over your system, the possibility of turning off desktop composition and this fake sense of security over not having cortana running on the background. That's about it.
>Win32
>slowly phased out
Wake me up in a decade or so when this actually happens.
>decade
not even close
this will take way longer
A decade is about how long they gave DOS when they started the process. I think it will be like 25 years.
there weren't nearly as many machines running DOS as there are machines running Win32 now
this will probably take 75 years
>What is so bad about the new version of X that isn't bad about the old version of X?
Telemetry, forced upgrades, advertisement.
It will be an OS as a Service in 4 years. Spoilers: I work for a MS certified gold partner company. My boss was at one table with the mudnigger calling the shots. Office 365 was their pilot, now they are rolling everything onto the SaaS model. AX Dynamics, Sharepoint, their operating system. Everything corporate and customer grade.
Disgusting.
>tfw still using win98
just got chinked by a battery supplier who sent me a old dead NIMH when I ordered a lithium-ion for this Presario laptop.
Hopefully by that time gaming will be good on Linux/OS X and I'll finally be able to drop Windows for good. Or I may turn into a console peasant. Forced updates are bad enough, Windows as a service is horrifying.
UWP is absolutely amazing. I've been WinRT developer for 4 years and I can't believe how much they improved on old architecture. great performance, Oneclick multi-platform deployment, hardware accelerated responsive UI, Store integration finally done right, oh yeah sign me up daddy

>2018 - new computers sport arm processors (sans stuff like thinkpads)
>2020 - Win32 support is now called "Win32 subsystem for Windows". And it comes disabled in Home versions.
>2026 - Win32 subsystem for Windows now comes disabled in all versions. By all i mean there are only 2 versions now. Enterprise and normal. N and LTSB replaced and discontinued.
No.
Add 10 years to those dates and it might be believable.
Does ARM even have any CPUs that aren't weak/mobile shit?
>running any new games on ARM
rofl
>arm-x86 emulation
>emulating x86 on something that's already several times slower
well then hopefully i'll grow up by then and stop caring about games
it's not like i use windows for anything else
Windows 10 has more bugs and is slower in CS:GO.
I have no good reasons to upgrade yet.
luckily you're not the only person on this planet
>What is so bad about the new version of X that isn't bad about the old version of X?
If the new version of X is just as bad as the current version of X, then why the fuck would I waste time updating? You don't update because the new version isn't worse, you do it because it's better. Stop thinking like an iToddler.
Thankfully Microsoft is not run by hobbyists and they already made it. It's plausible to assume that they've been working on it since Surface with Windows RT

There was chart -that i couldnt find now- comparing desktop gpus to mobile gpus, and mobile gpus were following like 3-4 years behind. Mind that mobile gpus are made with passive cooling and high power efficiency at the moment. No one has slapped a cooling fan on a snapdragon and cranked it up yet. They will catch on.
I verify this
O365 was only the beginning. Windows 10 was a disaster and they've begun SaaSing CRM and the rest of the business applications.

But I'm still on xp.
Windows 10 is an ever-changing, non-transparent, disjointed mess of an OS. Many of its annoyances can't be successfully tweaked away, and those that can require pages and pages of explanation. Furthermore, any such guide would require constant editing over time as Microsoft alters Windows 10 on almost a monthly basis now.
I've rapidly lost all respect for Microsoft, and consequently have lost a great deal of interest in anything to do with their products. Microsoft's clumsy, desperate, visionless push to get PC users to adopt dumbed-down mobile-oriented apps purely for their own commercial benefit; the unrelentingly persistent, unethical, and highly deceptive way they're trying to trick less tech-savvy Windows 7 and 8.1 users into "upgrading" to Windows 10; and their insistence on reducing user choice and control over Windows have all left a very bad taste in my mouth. This is an inept company struggling for relevance in the mobile era by shamelessly abusing its monopoly on desktop operating systems, and I don't want to play any part in helping them do that.
>cortana logs everything you say and everything you type
>it probably does it even if you say no
the fucking operating system flat out tells you
"hey we're gonna be logging your data and sending it to the government for money.... is that cool"
we need game devs to start programming on linux already so i can stop using this shit....
well, you can never be paranoid enough, right?
And?
except windows 7 is infinitely better than the botnet bullshit after it
Win XP for ever!
In my VM, I'm on GNU now bitches!
Also Win95/98SE > Win XP!
Let's say that I have a virtual machine with windows 10 right now on Parallels, for stupid shit (and games which work surprisingly well I might say).
Would I benefit from using Windows 7 instead over that virtual machine? Is 10 really that taxing?
Oh, I get it. It's a joke right? The less usable, shittier, older versions of Windows are better than the newer, better ones?
LTSB versions are not that taxing from my experience.
>There are people having sex who have never used windows XP
>Trying to guilt shame someone for not wanting to be a part of a literal NSA botnet
It doesn't make much sense to be bothered with that. Consider that there are people in their 60s who have just now touched a computer. Just like there are underaged kids trying windows 98 at this very moment.
>trying to guilt shame someone for not wanting to be a part of a literal /diy/ greasy neckbeard OS community
Its in the EULA.
Literally MS will tell you this.
NO.
Win 98.
>No windows DRM over the Internet.
>No Fisher-price GUI.
privacy.microsoft.com
They're not even hiding it anymore.
This.
Only a shill/retard will say otherwise.
Its literally open and everyone is saying it.
Win10 is spay-ware.
Start shitpositng on Loonix.

Mfw I saved my Banking password on Edge browser
my x60s runs xp as a music server
works fine
>Mfw I saved my Banking password on Edge browser
>UN-ironically using Win10
Seriously I never use a new OS for a year, it needs time for the first tards to be checked.
After I learned that Win10 is doing it Win10 was 100% useless for everything involving serious work or banking.
I switched to loonix for my banking and shitposting and everything.
Fuck with VMs or multiple HDD I can have unlimited distros legally so one VM is for banking, another for shitposting, another for watching scat porn.
Don't need no private browsing fool.
Get with the times wintards all you get now is ass raping.
like 98 is a worse 95, 7 is a worse Vista.
software support, more features (7 can't even mount disk images by default lmao), better performance and stability.
You will need to stitch to a fully NOT loonix in a VM under windows for banking bro.
no seriously you have to, and change your banking password.
This shit is important.
I was that weirdo then and I'm that weirdo now.
I'll upgrade when Cortana gets an anime avatar added.
DOS isn't phased out though.
Why do file paths still contain \?
Why is NUL a reserved filename?
>Why is NUL a reserved filename?
Because windows needs something like /dev/null

Why did they not get free-DOS?
kek

How to even get a hold of this anymore?
Everywhere I've asked returns with the canned
>but why would you need that?
>just use the bullshit we all have to gag on
It is on a certain forum(the same one to get everything else Microsoft), and uploaded onto a russian file-sharing site. It is still there iirc.
>7 is a worse Vista
7 is that. Slower Vista with more bloat. Open your eyes.
welcome to Sup Forums - Technology
>No windows DRM over the Internet.
what?
Gay sex
>t. OSX user
Now I'm as paranoid as the rest of you, but MS doesn't want to drain a normal user's bank accounts. That shit is bad for business.
Of course, of you're ever labeled a criminal or hacker...
Watches everything you do.
Not secure.
Drops tons of older drivers as a "debloat" method they employed.
Uses more disk space overall with higher resource consumption for the same tasks.
It's pointless if you don't need dx12.
if you rely on microsoft to take care of your security problems you have no one but yourself to thank when things go wrong
It's already happening. Only a few of the games I play need Windows.
My aunt worked in a corporate office back in the late 90's and got me a laptop that had like 80mb of ram or something. It ran windows 95 really good though. It shorted out so had to trash it but it was fun to play games on. I played games on it for like 10 years.
This.
They are struggling to find reasons to get people to upgrade.
No kernel level performance improvements.
Still using NTFS data integrity I wouldn't trust past 2TB.
Provides dx12 which every game shipped with currently runs with 12 & Vulkan or dx11 as well.
Spying. In. Everything.
Shit-- what was that thread where stuff compiled in recent iterations of VS was injected with micro amounts of spyware.
Native advertising on your start menu: You are the product.
Trying to get you to subscribe to features you once could own and milk easily 20x the money.
Forced updates & system instability/ uncertainty.
Duplicate elements in the UI/ two separate menus that do 3/4th of what the other does.
Inconsistent UI theme/ design
Unpredictable desktop behavior that leaves you struggling with small elements of your UI
Pushing for walled garden of the entire PC market
Nagware that tries to change your web browser so they can keep a kung fu grip on your web habits
Market share has flatlined after free upgrade. Nobody beyond those buying new PCs and free upgrades gone wrong want it or use it.
> switching to the newest version of windows before service pack 1
Stop buying prebuilds, retard
>Provides dx12 which every game shipped with currently runs with 12 & Vulkan or dx11 as well.
tell that to anyone trying to run microshit games
>halo
>gears
>forza
etc
>Nobody beyond those buying new PCs and free upgrades gone wrong want it or use it.
bcus microshit decided "oh ho ho we're going to own your pc now, refuse you access to files on your own pc!" you literally can't even view certain windows elements, can't make a guest account, and there's no such thing as a non admin account
yet they refuse to give the admin account root priveledge... it's fucked up i must say. can't even backup purchased content. which is illegal in several states/countries. as it's your god given right to have backups, especially of shit as finicky as digital content.
I was like that with 7 until I tried 8.1 just for the fuck of it, now I'm contempt with 8.1
I was actually excited for windows 10 but after trying it, I don't want it
>7 is a worse Vista.
lol wut
I'll switch back to 10 when I can use black box as a shell like on 7
Hi Nadella Satya. When you're done astroturfing here, why don't you do something useful like go tell the Outlook team to fix their buggy shit software?
>>No windows DRM over the Internet.
>what?
windows online activation
No the problem is that with all the security holes
(if you are running windows you are on a insecure system) you know that you have shit tones of ZERO day exploits.
Now combine this with the fact that Win10 as a build in system keyloger.
Can you imagine some criminal finding a easy way to use this to directly send the keylogs to their Russian server?
They no longer need to pre install a keyloger on the computer they can use the system tools.
This is the problem here not that MS will take your money.
From a practical standpoint MS can do it legally
>Dang-it, we patched another hole, better keep on updating to no lose money right plebs?
After all the EULA or ALL software states that the are immune from intensional harm.
So even if MS decides that the new Win10 upedate is sending all keylogs to a russian server you can not sue them.
Even if the decide the new windows is literally rm / -rf (delete everything) you can do jack and shit legally do to the EULA.
However the build in keyloger will be used by hackers to more easily keylog you.
Getting a sony level of data leak from MS of your keylogs will be apocalyptic also.
This is so true.
You can defend Vista and Win8.0 10^99999999999999999 times easily then you can defend Win10
If I ever get a new laptop and it has win10 on it I will UN-ironicaly ask the shop to remove it before buying.
Even if it costs more I want to send a message to MS.
Seriously people you need to consider migrating to loonix.
I already did and I'm not going back.
(dual booting to win7 for software that it needs ONLY)
>>halo
>>gears
>>forza
Is this even on the PC?
I'm talking the new that wold need dx12 not some 5 years after xbox with your PC halo 1 CD.
>after 1999
>using Outlook
Microsoft supported Windows 1.0 until 2001. Who was even using it???
>In the year 2016
>not having a job
Are you insane?
How do you need Outlook for a job?
Thunderbird?
E-mail over web interface?
>mfw I still have my copy of Win 98SE sitting right in front of me
Don't know why I haven't tossed it out yet.
There have always been times when upgrading was a mistake. Upgrading to windows ME or windows Vista were mistakes for me. I'm still on windows 7 with updates turned off, and unless Microsoft seriously unfucks themselves 7 will be the last release of there's I ever use.
Microsoft breakup when? MS has a Bell-tier monopoly on computing.
>monopoly
No its a hegemony stop saying this 1998 MEME shit.
>A monopoly is a situation in which a single company or group owns all or nearly all of the market for a given type of product or service.
Can't even install Thunderbird on the locked-down work PCs. Besides that, I don't think Thunderbird would support our Onedrive mail stores and inboxes shared from other employees.
Can you post something that makes literally any less sense?
I am actually legitimately having a hard time interpreting this post because I have absolutely no idea what fucking point you're trying to make
>like 98 is a worse 95
>7 is a worse Vista
know that feel bro
