What you are trying to write is possibly:

The reason is... Look how the ip address 255.255.255.0 is in binary:

11111111.11111111.11111111.00000000

There are 24 ones and 8 zeros. So the 24 in this case basically says "keep the 24 first bits while the rest is variable"

You can freely choose the last 64 bits of your IPv6 address.
