Sup Forums PCs are just fancy games consoles so in that context, yes they are obsolete.
They're fine for grandma's emailing machine though.
Inb4 some contrarian faggots claims he doesn't play games and does serious work and fails to fool anyone.

obsolete for gaming

would probably still be good for non-intensive programs and web browsing

Build times for my project would be on the hours on that thing. And can they even use a web IDE alike C9 without shitting the bed? Managing AWS stuff? I doubt it

I'm still trucking along with an e8400 and have no need to upgrade – it does what I need it to do. I love the fact that you can cool these things passively with just a big ol' heatsink.

E8500 and 7950 gpu can play Star Wars Battlefront. Bit juddery in places but if I turned down the quality it would be fine. I'm not going to get a new gaming pc until I really have to as we've also got xbox one.
Still plays all the games I love.

When I say obsolete, I'm talking about normie tasks. Not gaming/programming/rendering because genetically neurotypical human beings have no business doing that.

People use phones for that grandpa

not an argument

Some people:
a) prefer the bigger screen because vision/usability
b) like having a regular-sized physical keyboard to type on
c) need to do a little more than what a phone can handle
Hence why everyone in my family has at least a laptop, if not a desktop.
It wasn't intended to be. And you're not funny. Kill yourself.

E6550 3,5GHz here, still working fine,
but I'm waiting for Zen upgrade

Whatever you say grandma.

These are obsolete

Kaby Lake is faster, much more power efficient, handles 8K HEVC Main10 and VP9 Profile2 without even breaking a sweat

It's also a base price that is often out of budget for neurotypical people. Hence why many still use these non-obsolete, perfectly functional computers every day.

>everyone who plays video games, programs, or does anything else that requires more than the bare minimum of computing power has a mental disorder!
You're a very special human being.

The Core 2 Duo is still faster than most modern laptop processors so I see no need for it to be obsolete. In fact, the iMacs from 2007-2010 have various Core 2 Duos and they're running very well

Not really, phones have only really superseded traditional PCs for basic web surfing and email roles, for something actually productive even the biggest normie usually keeps an ancient core2 laptop mothballed in the back room for whatever, phones and even tablets are inherently trash for a lot of jobs thanks to a shit user experience gimped for fat fingers

I still use a Librebooted Thinkpad T400 running Debian for shitposting and email. I have it set up in with an external monitor since the built in display is shit. It has a P8400, 4GB of RAM, and a 250GB HDD. It's plenty fast and I wouldn't mind using it as a daily driver if I didn't have the money for newer hardware.

You're even more special to overinterpret what I said.

grandma can email from a well equipped P3. She can also use an office suite, watch Oral Roberts videos on Youtube and shit like that.

I manage an AWS environment for one of my clients from a Pentium D 950 and, if that one is tied up, my Atom N450 Dell Mini 1012.

A C2D is fine for programming unless you're coding/testing high end games.

I've rescued two Acer notebooks that were headed for the trash. Maxed the CPUs in both (2.6 and 2.8ghz) and dropped in SSDs. They run fucking great. Their only real limitation is 4gb of RAM.

I also rescued a black MacBook 2ghz. Apple soldered the damn CPU (faggots) but it's actually still fine for a wide range of shit. The web is sluggish though. Games at least have an excuse but Pajeet's inefficient web shit with 40 meme js libraries really pisses me off.

I actually own 3 PC's with E8400's in them I use to play the arcade cracks of beatmania. They work pretty well for what they are. They're even able to run GTAV okay with a decent GPU.

I was pretty suprised at how capable they still are.

Let's not get carried away. I tried to surf the web from what I'd say is a well equipped P3 (pic related) and it was painful. The oldest you can really go for tolerable internet speeds is a (high-end) Pentium 4/M or Athlon/Turion 64.

>pentium D
How has your house not burned down yet?

>Their only real limitation is 4gb of RAM.
4GB is plenty for normie needs. Hell, even 2GB can suffice.

I have a NAS/seedbox running on it, and it works just fine.

>tfw T500 with T9900 CPU

Shit's amazing, gets a bit toasty after a while though
I use 32 bit because IIDX runs best on it for some reason. It's a really picky crack.
>XP
But why?

just werks

And so does Windows 7. Not to mention it looks nicer and supports more modern software.

I use this computer mainly for cracks of arcade music games. They have really specific hardware/OS requirements to work and sync well. WXP seems to work the best for me.

I see. Carry on.

If you compare a C2D from 10 years ago to intel's latest offering, practical computing power has doubled.

It took 10 years to double.
While it may sound impressive if you were living under a rock, that's pathetic if you've built a PC in the last 10 years.

What do you mean by the latest offering? Pentium? i3? Certainly not i5/i7?

I'm going to get a 50$ e8400 rig and 30$ square monitor to dump my single core celeron 540 laptop, i dont need anything more desu

I pity the poor.

You could just spend $30 on a T9600 and 4GB of RAM for your laptop. It'll make a world of difference.

I pity the poor in brain cells

socket incompatible

No, they're both Socket P. You may need to get the latest BIOS update for it to work, though.

>mfw running media server off an old E8400 without issue

muh x265

The processor and the platform as a whole is obsolete.

pin compatible but not electrically compatible, bios is updated, i just want to get rid of it desu

do you even have hdmi on that shit?

A well equipped p3 would be something like this:

VIA Apollo 266T based mobo (like a Gigabyte GA-6RX)
Radeon 2400 AGP card
2GB RAM
minimum of a 933MHz P3
and arguably SATA 1.0 or 2.0 controller+drive.

Something like that would work pretty well IMO. I have an i820 based machine right now with a 933MHz proc, 1GB RDRAM, and a PCI based HD 2400 and it's pretty good.

No. Plex + Chromecast/PS4/smart tv

Okay, then put it on eBay for cheap, then use the money to fund something that's a better value than a C2D. C2D's are still usable, but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy one when newer CPU's can be had for slightly more.
You could probably buy 2 complete C2D systems for the same price as one of those motherboards. Why bother?

I pity the poor fool who thinks they're not. These aren't even useful in an HTPC anymore.

thing is, the keyboard is broken, fan is noisy and there's cum stains on the keyboard, idk if anyone will want it, i'll try tho

Bullshit, I use one every day

through ethernet or did you install a wifi card?

An HTPC is a fairly demanding task, though. The bottom of the barrel benchmark for obsolescence should be "Is it usable for web browsing, office productivity, and casual gaming?" And the answer to that question, when referring to the C2D, is a definite yes.

Ethernet. I used a USB dongle for wifi previously but since it's a desktop I've stuck with hard wiring

My old mother has a Dell Studio 1535.

Intel Core2 Duo inside. I replaced the HDD with a SSD.

She uses it for web and e-mail, basically.

She's running GNU/Linux with a Xfce4 desktop and uses Firefox has her browser. It works just fine for her needs. That Core2 Duo is more than enough.

The most amazing thing is that it still looks brand new. She's always careful with it and always washes her hands before using it.

Pic isn't the 17" she has but it's about the same.

Fuck off poorfag, that shit sucks. I know because I had one until 2014, but I got a job.

does mcdonalds really pay that well?

I just bought one off ebay for 19 bucks.

Gonna upgrade my folk's browsing box with it. They have a Core Duo right now (1.66ghz).

Hoping everything will go alright, never installed a CPU but it shouldn't be hard.

weak bantz

bet you make em burgers dance on the frier

I pit the poor fool who is too poor to buy current year tech

yo is it true they make the hamburgers with worm meat?

I do LOL

Yes XDDDDD

A Pentium is perfectly sufficient for programming as long as you're not compiling the kernel or something.

Only good thing about Kaby Lake is that it will reduce Windows' market share.

It's the most secure version of Windows.

What OS is installed on that machine?

My 2007 shitposter.

Worst than a celeron

used one till earlier this year. Still have it sitting around in case i wanna use it for something..

ark.intel.com/products/97143/Intel-Pentium-Processor-G4560-3M-Cache-3_50-GHz

Faster and more power efficient than any Core 2 for $64

my HTPC for a few years was a Core 2 and a GT610, really not that hard to do. It did x264, h.264 1080p stuff just fine

Has anyone here ever experimented with Pentium 4 and certain PCI video cards to decode video? I wanted to didn't have the time when I last looked into it

completely obsolete. Absolutely shit IPC.

>>pentium D
>How has your house not burned down yet?

Pentium D 950. It's not that bad and the stock Intel cooler keeps it in check well enough. From what I've heard they overclock pretty well too. I'm using an Intel mobo for mine so no overclocking and if I ever buy another 775 board it's gonna be for a C2Q.

>Has anyone here ever experimented with Pentium 4 and certain PCI video cards to decode video?

I have a 2.0GHz Northwood P4 with a Radeon HD3450 PCI. It pretty much offloads

dammit...

It pretty much offloads all video decoding from the CPU.

>PC almost falling off

It's amazing that you can buy used computers with Sandy bridge i5 desktops for so cheap now if you wanted a decent non-gaming computer. Just add a SSD and you'll have a computer that will still be fast for probably the next 2 decades.

To be honest, an AMD E1 is up to normie tasks...
I hate it, I could not stand how slow they are, but hey, we are talking about normies.

Here is the list:
> can it open facebook.com?
> can it play a youtube.com video?
> can it upload pictures to facebook.com?
> can it like pictures on facebook.com?

If all check, it is the perfect machine for a normie.

Don't know, the PSU is old in those.

I can't get mine past 2.8, what mobo and cooler are you using?

What are you guys waiting to upgrade from your C2Ds? Personally I'm waiting for a good, cheap 6+ core chip. Hoping for Zen.

>get old pentium d machine
>add more ram and storage
>has some fuckhuge acer cpu cooler on it so i oc it by like 500mhz
>STILL cant handle firefox
>even orange box games struggle
>buy a C2 quad for 20 bucks free postage
>same socket as the pentium
>can still oc it since the huge acer cooler is more than enough
pic related my epicc gaymnig rig

>Not gaming/programming/rendering because genetically neurotypical human beings have no business doing that

>People use phones for that grandpa

Phone ergonomics permanently a shit. Phone screens tiny. Only phone virtue is portability.

Don't buy AYYMD junk

Apollo Lake DESTROYS AYYMD AM1 garbage and has 8K HEVC Main10 hardware decoding & 4K VP9 hardware decoding

What did he mean by this?

Zen will be great, can't wait. My C2D can't run any gaymen past 2012.

Your mindless shilling and useless fud has no effect here!

STAY MAD, AYYMDPOORFAGS

Benchmarks show the bitter truth, AM1 garbage gets CRUSHED by Apollo Lake's superior CPU core, GPU and hardware decoder

Best build.

Obsolete, g3900 exists. Overclocks to 4.5 on air.

Nigga, I have one and it's getting around 65° (idle) on stock cooler with new thermal paste. It's sit.

Maybe try liquid nitrogen?

I'll try the trash. Thanks god my i5 mobo is on the way

I need moar baites!

Has anyone in here tried to mod the lga 775 to lga 771 and put in a xeon? Is the performance gain from c2d/c2q worth it?

Performance would be exactly the same as the equivalent Duo/Quad (i.e. an X3360 will perform identically to a Q9550.) The only reason why people do the mods is price - Xeon's are typically cheaper for some reason.

>xeon x3360 on ebay £30 to £38
>xeon x3363 on ebay £21 to £42
>Q9550 on ebay £28 to £44
I guess the gap is more wide in newer models like X5650 for ~£50 or e5-2xxx v4 for £150+ to i7-5th gen £250+

Yeah. You can get an X5680 for less than $150, but a 980X will set you back at least $200. I imagine it was the same with the X3360 and Q9550 a few years ago.

They have Snow Leopard.

I was thinking of trying to install Win10 or 8.1 on it. If it doesn't work, I might just force a firmware upgrade to UEFI (from EFI 1.x) and install a 64-bit OS that supports this CPU. THat could be Maverick, maybe, or with some hacks it could be higher.

Or I might install them both and have them choose.

A linux distro wouldn't help them since they are too PC illiterate to use it.

Yea I upgraded from my Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz (as high as it would go) to an X5450 @ 4.1Ghz (would go higher but I cant keep it cool).

The X5450 cost me £10. Benchmarks like a stock i5-2500k!

Nice, great bargin!
Well I might consider going 2nd hand and xeon e-something build in the future then.
For now the i5-4670k and gtx 770 suites me fine.
