Because the screen is a big grid of pixels, and so is the camera. Lining up both grids perfectly is difficult.

I don't blame him. I generally say "ThinkPad" or the model ("X220T" or "T420" or "T60p") instead of just 'laptop', in an effort to give more info. "MacBook Pro with Retina Display" is kind of a mouthful, though, also the "with Retina Display" part seems a bit unnecessary.
