I generally use C++ more than C but I still believe C is the best language out there. People that say C is dying are retarded, it's not going anywhere for at least another 20 years.

I never understood why people hate Java other than the autistic naming conventions most IDEs suggest you use. It's a generally good platform for beginners and people that want cross platform software written fast.
Java is my first language, and I'm very aware of the problems it has, especially concerning memory.

C# is a good alternative to Java if you don't mind Microsoft's massive influence on the language.

GLSL is my top graphics programming language due to it being extremely similar to ANSI C and my experience with it. It's extremely easy to learn if you're even slightly familiar with C.

>Rustx5

I know pieces of most (relevant) programing languages, but the only one I've really mastered is C.

I only have 4 but
>angular
>jade
>bootstrap
>php

serves me pretty well

>C
>perl
>bash
>assembly
>python

>C++
>C#
>Python
>Java

Everything else I've used wasn't very pleasant.

Perl is actually the only language i seriously learned. I have a bit knowledge about c, c++, vala and recently rust but I am not sure which way I should go.
Any recommendations?

Haskell's pretty great, desu.

Covers alot of whats out there. C# should be on there to some extent for Unity shit if you're into that (I am), but I'm a linooxfag who hates mono

desu most if what I write these days it's just c wrapped in python wrapped in bash

Do you actually use C that much or are you just trying to be with the cool kids?

1. idris
2. haskell
3. limbo
4. ocaml
5. D

if we're counting theorem assistants, coq would be on there at #2

you don't need dependent types to print "hello world" you fucking showoff

>you don't need dependent types to print "hello world" you fucking showoff
well, actually, you need dependent types for type-safe printf

1. Haskell
>Type-safe, functional, pure functions etc.. Basically, you could probably stick to this language for most things.
2. Scheme
>Sometimes dynamic typing is comfy, mostly for small programs. Great language for trying out simple ideas.
3. C
>It's simple, fast, and portable. Good for small but important programs. Like Scheme, good for trying simple things like algorithms.
4. Python
Easy to use, lots of nice libraries. Gets stuff done, basically. Also good for trying stuff out, really.
5. C++, I guess
I basically don't know this language (yet) but constructors, polymorphism, abstract classes, overloading, those fancy pointers etc. all seem quite comfy coming from C.

I'm still learning all of these languages, though.

I'm trying to get into COBOL. But just finding a compiler for windows and learning material is already a pain in the ass. Can you recommend?

No particular order.

>Lua
Made me a non-NEET and got me into programming.

>C#
Makes a lot more sense than C++, but I don't like that it's Microsoft-ified.

>JavaScript
Nice and cute. I like it.

>Java
Because of Android. Only reason. More tolerated than liked.

>Python
There's just something about it that makes me really like it.

>C
Just getting into it for real, it's great

>Python
Did this in my first semester comp sci, it's okay for quick things, but i don't really like it, and hate writing it, even in my favorite editor. ducktyping is the worst.

>C#
Did this in my first semester of CS also. I hate the IDE, I like that there's a library for everything, but I hate the GUI builder. Once you've tried XIB you'll never go back.

>Javascript/Typescript
whatever. i'm not interested in web development anyway. More interested in network/OS programming atm.

>Ruby
Better than python, but might be ded in 10 years. My goto for scripting though.

Are you even trying?
A simple Google search yeilds hits all over the joint.
There are threads on stackoverflow, too.

i'm in my second year of CS, but at the moment this is what i've worked with.

>JavaScript
>C#

I fucking hate java sintax but i learned it just for android anyway.

i like C#, is like a prettier Java but doesn't really draw my attention right now

i'm really loving JS, learning Angular and node, syntax feels really smooth

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY ASSEMBLY ???

ALL OF THEM ?

WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING user THIS SEEMS VERY COOL

OP here..expecially ARM, IA-64, IA-32; but once you have learned assembly language for one architecture it is very easy to switch to other ones..C/C++ is probably the language I most use..obviously I learned java but I really think it is overrated, it has a very bad syntax and a lot of problems. Talking about script language I think ruby is probably the best language ever, I really suggest all of you to try it.

>C++ / ASM
anything is possible, muh performance, plus any sufficiently low level shit is easier, or only possible, to do in pure asm, e.g. implementing multithreading in a homebrew OS

>HLSL
muh gpu parallelism

>C#
muh simple gui apps

>Cython
muh typed python, fast and great scripting ahoy

>Scheme
honorable mention, couldnt really think of a 5th language that i liked

arm 64 bit assembly
C
Rust
Javascript
F#

I recommend you to learn everything you can in your life. Knowledge is power.

i like the transition learning python has for going to C and C++ has a ton of libraries and documentation for bigger application/system programming. I like lua for it's efficiency as an interpreting language although i wish it had better syntax.

what's scheme like? I hear it's beautiful to work in.

These threads always makes me wonder how many people here actually has a job within software development. There's relatively few jobs that require C/C++ knowledge. Python isn't used THAT much. Although it's used in some circumstances.

Even if a job requires C/C++ knowledge it's usally extremely complex systems, and not just some small tiny ass hobby project which most people here are used to. C/C++ programming as a job at a company can be extremely frustrating, even if you feel like you know the language good.

Most jobs will require C# or Java. Other than that, it's often also required to know SQL or similar. If you don't like or can't program in C# or Java, you might aswell give up on your education. It's extremely hard to find a entry level job within C/C++.

Haskell
Python
Lisp
Prolog
C

I've also worked in js, Java, C++, PHP, SQL, Ruby, and shell scripting, but those are all (excepting rb) super gross for various reasons.

>C#
>I hate the GUI builder

You using windows forms or what? It's all about WPF now.

not that bad really, my main complaint about it is that the tool support for it makes it a bit harder than it needs to be, more stuff to remember yourself, but at its worst its like programming anything in notepad.
imo its not much different in style to other Lisp languages

>Funny-games.biz
I was sad when they stopped updating their porn games.

I don't care about best programming language to getting a job, I only care about best programming language to write the best software I can.

Go learn c wtf

this. you guys misunderstand what makes C++ so good. it's the fact that there are so many libraries that take away the low level work and let you implement shit like openAL/openGL really fast and really efficiently.

I left the binary dev world for greener pastures years ago. My toolkit is now comprised of:

> PHP 7
> SASS
> HTML
> SQL
> And a fucking amalgamation of horse shit we call modern front end development with ES6 compiled JSX using React interpreted through webpack-compiled Babel. FUCK

> C
> Assembly
> C++
> Python
> Perl

> Why
I specialize on exploit development and malware analysis, so I'm most often exposed to C and Assembly. Although I have seen some C# and VB malware, it's easier to visualize the Assembly code in C.
