Got one that's been on and reading files permanently for 4 years in a media player upstairs, it was showing warnings and riddled with bad sectors when I last checked it 2 years ago, don't want to risk checking again incase it won't power back up.

pretty sure it puts more wear on them to cold start when you turn your computer on than to leave them running. they should spin down and idle after a few minutes if they aren't being accessed as well
