2k computer

All right Sup Forums time to upgrade from my current computer

I bought everything when the Windows 7 Ultimate House Party happened, I got it but never threw a party

I know Ryzen comes out tomorrow, but staying around this price, are there any changes that would increase performance?

hold me, Sup Forums

I didn't realize the mobo is now out of stock, so it was removed from my wish list.

I will probably go with the MSI X99A SLI PLUS, but it would be nice to find a cheaper alternative that isn't refurbished or open box.

EVGA PSUs suck, 6800K is entirely outmoded until they drop the price to $240 or so, 1070 is about to get a good sized price drop, 5400 RPM drives are horrible, WD killed the Green brand and relabeled all their Greens to Blue, 850 Pro is old, get a 960 Evo, much faster

Literally get a r7 1700

>6800K
kys

Then in then in your next life get a 1700

Thanks for the input, but I'm not sure why you mention the WD Green series because the one I selected is Blue. It's just going to be used for storage, I already have 10 TB or so.

I am waiting for the price drop on the 1070 and I may change to a 1080 or 1080 Ti if they are around the current 1070 price. I'm hoping it is soon.

I didn't know the 960 was out, I'm obviously behind. Thanks

Previously the idea was Green for cheap storage, Blue for performance, Black for reliability. They exploited the branding of Blue as performance drives by rebranding their cheap Green shit as Blue while raising prices.

Got it?

No more 7200 RPM Blue drives, it's all relabeled 5400 RPM Green drives now.

You're both right. I do a lot of transcoding with music and videos, not to mention editing porn and playing vidya, and I know the additional threads would benefit more than the 6800.

HOWEVER

The max RAM is 64 GB for every AM4 mobo I've seen, while a lot of 2011-v3 boards have eight memory slots and support 128 GB of RAM (which I could do within a few months). Will 64 GB be enough for everything?

I'd like to upgrade to a 4k television some time too, I currently have a 1080p 50" plasma that doubles as a heater. Although that may be in the future, I expect higher performance needs for the resolution change.

>cheap storage
That's what I'm going for. I have a Green WD 1 TB drive that has been running for years. Seven, if I recall correctly. It'll die eventually just like most hard drives, but everything is backed up.

On the subject of GPUs, worth it to wait for Vega? Because I'd rather get something within the next week or so unless it is exponentially worth more to wait.

Vega 10 is going to be a 1080 Ti competitor, if about a hundred dollars cheaper is worth two or so months to you, then wait senpai.

I'm not saying a hundred dollars cheaper isn't worth it, but it's difficult to wait for products that are "about to release" because once it is available to consumers, there is something else "about to release". Not everyone feels that way, but I do. Ryzen is most likely worth the wait.

Nah markets go in bulges. Volta and Navi are far off, time to buy is when Vega 10 drops.

fair point

get rid of the 1070 and get a price cut 1080.

get rid of the 1000w PSU and get a 750W psu.

buy the cpu on ebay used. OR switch to a 7700k for 300 thanks to the price cut.

look for better ram, i bought 2x16 gb ddr4 3200 for $212. you only need 16 gb btw.

look for a cheaper 4tb hd mine was 120.

look for a cheaper 512gb ssd, mine was well under 270.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've made another build.

Thoughts?

Someone took the effort to make that holy shit.

>tfw to intelligent for art

>1080
>not 1080 Ti
do you even try

shameless bump

new build here

thoughts?

you had to at least pretend to have a party. now MS can sue you

Oh nooooooo

It's okay I don't use that key any more

>EVGA PSUs suck
You wot m8?
The G2 and G3 are some of the best you can get, almost as good as straight from Seasonic.

These prices are fucking horrible, you need to at least use pc part picker or shop around.

ssd too high.

1080 too high, should be 500 at the MOST. get 1080 ti if you can afford it.

psu still too high

memory is better but still too high.

and again you dont need 16 gigs of ram or a 850 watt power supply even. feel free to buy 1x 16 gig 3200 stick of ram and upgrade later.

I agree, the prices are horrible. It's all on Newegg so I could make a complete list, but in actuality I plan on using Amazon and eBay and any other deals I can find. I will probably wait a few days since Ryzen is getting released, then I'll see about changing things if prices drop.

The RAM is a bit pricey compared to what I've been looking at. I might change the SSD, but it seems like Samsung has top performance, so I'd like to stay with that. The PSU I might drop to 750 to reduce price. Thanks for the input!

it won't be released for another couple weeks???

>pcpartpicker.com/list/HHR4jc
heres a way better build that you can buy next week.

you can get it even cheaper if you shop around as pc part picker doesnt always have the cheapest prices.

the titan x pascal = 1080 ti btw.

may i ask what you need so much ram and cpu power for? unless you're trying to do some hardcore streaming, editing, or video rendering, this is all unjustified money. and your psu is still too high

PSU is that high in case I decide to SLI, can't hurt I figure

I do enough editing and rendering and transcoding that I know 100% for sure I want 32 GB of RAM, if not 64 GB. Mostly for editing porn (literal job), and I do transcoding with anime and music.

Thanks for telling me about PC Part Picker, I went and checked it out. I can save about $400 now, and I expect that to be even more within the next few weeks. And of course I price shop to be sure I get the best deals possible without sacrificing quality.

Okay so I checked out the build, good stuff. There are some problems though. One is of course the RAM, and I stated why I would like 32 GB. The motherboard is also very expensive - why? What benefits does it have over the mobos that are $150 cheaper? It is an awesome mobo, but I'm not sure if it justifies the cost.

Oh, and the video card states $700 on that site, but I can't find it anywhere for that price. I saw a refurbished one on Newegg for $1000. If the prices are going to drop within a couple weeks, I might consider it if it is low enough.

$2k computer with a 1070 LMAO
And a 6800k.

You can get an r9 fury for half the cost of that 1070 and it's 90% as good performance. Or get a 1080Ti if you're going to spend that much, dumbass.

And why such shit memory? You're pretty clueless on this why don't you pay someone to make you a good computer.
You could literally give someone $2k, and they'd make you a computer that's like 40% faster while still taking a $500 cut for themselves.

>$650 for a 1080
>1080Ti is 35% faster and only $50 more

kys

I didn't realize that's how much the 1080Ti is going to cost. So in that case, obviously I'll wait.

well said

r/buildapcsales

You should spend the extra $100 for a 1800X and just get an R9 Fury, 1060, or RX480 for now. Then upgrade to Vega/Volta. They're going to be huge technologal leaps over the essentially 5 year old Pascal.

Unless you have so much money that you plan on upgrading from a 1080Ti within a year anyway. You might be able to sell the 1080Ti used for $300 then, anyway.

You may want to read up on evga's 1070 ACX 3.0 cooler. You should probably get an ICX for your own peace of mind.

contrabulations you are now a meme

not sure why you like the g710, little bit more money goes a long way, you're already spending a lot. why have a bad experience using your new pc lol
>case
i suggest the 400c/q from corsair, or define s from fractal design, maybe the r4/r5 too depending on what you like. midi r2 seems outdated.
>gpu
yeah id wait for the 1080ti
>mouse
logitech g pro is lighter (it matters, trust me) and prettier/less meme looking
>watercooling aio
get noctua even though the fan color is bad, less moving parts (points of failure), same performance if not better, quieter, and cheaper
>psu
get an evga g2 750w instead, cheaper and better. rm series is substandard compared to the oem evga uses (Superflower IIRC)
>ugly red mushkin ram
if you like red, use this model in google, gskill tridentz ram # F4-3200C16D-32GTZA
>single 4tb drive
if you're editing things and sensitive media, get two 3tb drives and run them in raid6(?) for backup.

otherwise looks fine

Thanks

I might do that, waiting for Vega seems good but I definitely want something sooner.

I don't know what mouse to get. I don't really like Razer and I don't need the 12 extra buttons.

logitech g pro, i already said it

nice trips

An R9 Fury is only $235 and will play every game at 60fps+ 1440p. Go look at benchmarks. R9 Fury is the best Performance/$ you can buy for 1440p. It's about 90% the performance of the 1070 but for almost half the cost, so really the best buy for a 'waiting for Vega/Volta' card unless you can throw money away and want the best you can get for now anyway.

Also, R9 Fury resale value is expected to go up, not down, as they're almost sold out. Like look at how expensive R9 Nanos and R9 Fury X are used.

It's a good card to get to hold out for Vega/Volta.

People have this crazy idea that there is no way that Vega will beat the 1080Ti, but they are people that know absolutely nothing about GPU architecture.
Vega has 95% the performance of the 1080Ti *when it's emulating GCN*. But it has many things in its architecture that individually increase performance 50%, 100%, 25% in different areas. Add them together when the drivers are finally production ready and games use them, and you're talking a 25-75% increase over the 1080Ti overall depending on the game. It's going to be the biggest performance jump ever. Even bigger than GCN originally was, which was fucking huge and took NVidia 3+ years to catch up.
And Volta is similar, a big architectural change, though we know little about it and NVidia has less experience with these complicated hardware schedulers and HBM.
Pascal is basically stretching out 6 year old Fermi as long as Nvidia possibly could because Volta keeps being delayed. It's good but it's 85% EoL old technology that's die shrunk and souped up, whereas Volta and Vega are more like 85% new by comparison.

damn son i forgot about fury honestly

it's down to 250$~? nutso

It's been around $250 or less since Black Friday.

Sorry I accidentally submitted without fully responding to your post. I wanted to have the drives visible on the case originally. I guess having the door on the case isn't so bad though, good chance I will switch to that. Plus, it has a very similar look and material to my Lian Li PC-K7B case.

The keyboard, I don't know what to get. I don't need anything extreme. Mechanical is good. Suggestion? I misread the comment about the mouse and probably have a confusing reply, but the mouse you suggested is a bit small. I'm currently using the G500 mouse and have been for years, I really like the feel of it and would like to keep my new one similar.

I've had the Prolimatech Megahalems since 2009, it takes up so much room in the case, plus the weight has always made me nervous. Water cooling would alleviate that problem, but I see what you mean. If I do choose air cooling, it will be Noctua for sure. Still on the fence about it.

Thanks for the suggestion on the PSU. I will check it out. Exact prices will vary once I finally do order, but I don't expect by much. For the RAM, it's really just a cheap placeholder on my Newegg list. I know there are plenty of other cheaper alternatives available that are better, I will be using Amazon Prime among other things.

As far as the HDD goes, I already have 10 TB worth of drives and that is plenty of space already. The 4 TB drive just gives plenty of comfort room. I've done RAID 1 in the past but I'm not going to do it this time because I don't think it's necessary.

Appreciate the detailed responses.

After reading this post and doing a bit of digging, waiting for Vega does seem like the smartest move. If the R9 Fury is that cheap, it might be worth it to grab that instead. I know someone who would probably buy it used anyway. Very good information, thank you.

if you're into the rgb backlight meme, k70 rgb has always been a good way to go. i keep my colors static now though.

if not, corsair strafe is really nice. limited to red led (or rgb) but it's a quality board.

any of the quickfire mechanical boards are also really nice, and fairly cheap. never been a big fan of logitech keyboards but the 810 orion(?) is pretty solid looking, no crazy contours and shit like the 910.

>cooler weight
not really an issue with the brackets you mount it with as long as you installed it properly. the weight on the motherboard from the cooler is evened out by the backplate you install, so it's nothing to be worried about. don't gotta go dual tower cooler if you don't want to. the 212 evo has proven it's not necessary.

backlight meme? I just like having a backlit keyboard, not particular on colors and such.

And yeah, I know I shouldn't worry about the heatsink weight, but I can't help it.

i mean the "rgb" backlight meme

Oh, the multiple colors on the backlight? I'm color blind so I don't give a shit (can't see pic related but i know what it says)

What does this say? Someone who's not colourblind please respond
