Ryzen gaymen performance is about 10-20% lower than the target competition from Intel, but the price is 30-50% lower.

Which one would you choose?

PS. Production = Ryzen is the winner.

it's 10-20% lower than a 7700k which is cheaper. i think it's lower than that when compared to a 6900k.

We have now enough data to make some valid comparisons in 1080p gaming.

Let us compare two reviews and their results in games. Both were done in 1080p and both websites used GTX1080. Games were a bit different but as can be seen from results, relative perf. differences are roughly the same.

Hardware.fr:
hardware.fr/articles/956-21/indices-performance.html

2600K - 100
7700K - 137.9
1800X SMT on- 110.1
1800X SMT off- 120.9

With SMT activated on Ryzen, 7700K is ~25% faster than 1800X. With SMT off, 7700K is 14% faster than 1800X in 1080p. SMT on/off brings 120.9/110.1~=1.098 or ~10% more fps

PClab.pl (this one is great since it has OCed results too!)
pclab.pl/art72996-45.html

7700K - 124
7700K @ 5Ghz- 130
1800X stock( SMT on)- 101
1800X @ 4.075Ghz (SMT on)- 109

7700K @ stock is ~23% faster than 1800X at stock (SMT on). This matches really well hardware.fr's results meaning both reviews came to roughly the same performance numbers albeit using different games.

Continuing with pclab, at max OC clocks the 7700K @ 5Ghz is ~19% faster in 1080p gaming than 4.075Ghz 1800X with SMT enabled. With SMT disabled 1800X @ 4.075Ghz should be scoring ~119pts.

It then follows that if we apply the effect of disabling SMT on a 8C 4.075Ghz Ryzen , 5Ghz 7700K would be roughly 130/119~=1.092 or ~10% faster than 4Ghz 1800X, while using GTX1080 and gaming in 1080p resolution.

There you go. That is a definition of "poor gaming performance" by today's (fanboy) standards, 10% difference.

IT'S NOT A FUCKING GAYMEN CPU
AMD ONKY MARKETED THAT WAY FOR EXTRA SALES
IF YOU'RE A GAYMER WAIT FOR R5
Other than that R7 is pretty great overall and we now finally have competition. Hopefully when I upgrade 3 years from now it will be for an AMD cpu.
I hope they get enough revenue to get their own fabs

Idgaf about r7, when is r5 coming?

Lower core count parts are not going to clock any higher.

that'd be the 1800x
1800x competes with 6900k
1700x is both bw-e up to 6850k/6900k and 7700k
1700 competes with 7700k
q2 of this year

You mean 20%

>You will disable your threads from BIOS every time you want to play a video game

LMAO

>While costing more

AAAAAY

Top kek. The 7700k went down to $340 the other day when there was still some hope Ryzen might be good. Now that it is confirmed not competitive the price is back up to $349.

Intel the ultimate penny pinching jew but at least they put out better products for the money.

in amd's defense, this is a new architecture
developers now need to consider yzen while making new games
bios updates and general update won't be a cure-all, but will definitely help amd gain some percentage back

>developers now need to consider yzen while making new games

has nothing to do with game developers. Comes down to the OS / low level / possibly middleware stuff.

I'm waiting 2 months and making my decision then. The motherboard situation seems to be completely shit with weekly if not even daily UEFI updates to help both performance and stability.

We're also still waiting for the Windows patch to drop to help properly deal with AMD's SMT and such which probably won't be until next month.

So in ~2 months I'll see where the whole Ryzen platform is at before deciding on whether to get the 1700x/1800x, get a i7 6850K, or just wait until the summer and get Skylake-X.

my post still covered low-level, bios, os (general updates)

>JUST WAITâ„¢ FOR R5

...

The only price disparity is between any intel 2011-v3 cpus.
As it stands now the 7700k is cheaper than the 1700

>IF YOU'RE A GAYMER WAIT FOR R5
Wait for Zen, wait for Vega, wait for R5..
The rest of the world isn't waiting and they are coming out with new products

its retailers not intel that were dropping prices.

soo many fucktards reported micro centers pricedrop as intel's price drop.
newsflash thats a fucking sale, not a price drop.

Are you retarded?

Ryzen is MORE EXPENSIVE AND SLOWER

It's a LOSE-LOSE

production = cuda is the winner.

Why does Intel's 8 cores overclock to a lower clock rate than their 4 cores then?

Waited since 2012 for a decent upgrade path. Was pretty happy when it turns out that the Ryzen CPUs are actually good as opposed to the rather meh FXes since Bulldozer.

A CPU that can obliterate Intel's offerings in some tests while scoring on par in most tests (IPC that is) is pretty huge. No surprise losing either in the few tests that use AVX256.

No surprise in the 7700k beating it in most gaming tasks either as it's clocked much higher and most games still gain a lot from single thread performance.

But dammit, I'm still waiting on the mainboard I ordered...

You can't compare entirely dissimilar things.
Broadwell-E overclocks are limited by power delivery. At 4.2ghz you're already pulling 200w+, and power is a square of voltage. Voltage requirements increase exponentially outside of a certain range. You hit 300w really damn quick.
Plenty of people have hit 4.5-4.8ghz on water loops with Broadwell-E despite this. So long as the board can handle it you can push clocks until you hit the thermal wall.

The limiting factor for Ryzen is voltage. The XFR boost state is requesting 1.475v for its temporary 4.1ghz turbo. You're already hitting the limits of what you can run through the chip at room temps, and its very close to thermal limits even under a big cooler. Its not limited by power consumption. A bad overclock with all cores pinned to 3.8ghz is only pulling 140w, TheStilt showed a good one of 3.9ghz while pulling just under 125w.
Its voltage pure and simple, and that will not change depending on core count.
The process characteristics are not at all equivalent.

r5 1600x.
