X220 screen quality

I know some of you autists unironically love these, so I figured I'd ask here at the expensive of triggering the whole board.

Is the 1366x768 screen really that bad on these? I know the resolution is on the lower side but I mean is the TN panel really that bad?

>1366x768 [TN] screen really that bad on these?
Yes, but there is a IPS option for the x220, it is still pretty bad though.

768p is also just too low res in general, even for a 12" screen.

95% of ThinkPads on eBay UK that go for a reasonable price are TN panels. Should I just go for a Dell Latitude?

>Is the 1366x768 screen really that bad on these?
yes.

>I know the resolution is on the lower side but I mean is the TN panel really that bad?
it;s fucking garbage.

never listen to ChinkPad shills. should have bought a used MBP/MBA instead.

Those were shit at the time and are still shit today. It's like staring at a screen covered in a thick layer of dried cum. There are no viewing angles to speak of.

its usable because the device is so small.

i have a tablet with a 10" 1920x1200 screen and its not really much better.

MBA screens are as bad as on thinkpads, just glossy

I've got one and it's eye cancer.

>is the TN panel really that bad?
It's garbage. The only panel worth a damn is the IPS one, and that's still only decent at best.

>i have a tablet with a 10" 1920x1200 screen and its not really much better.
why do you say that?

you've obviously never used one. stay pleb, pajeet.

I just bought an x220t with the ips screen. It is certainly better than the 13" TN laptop I had been using. Good viewing angles and decent screen clarity. For the screen size the resolution is just fine. It's a $200 ultraportable, not a high end workstation. You have to have reasonable expectations.

>get TN
>looks like trash
>get IPS version
>looks mediocre and develops bright spots
>give it to child and buy macbook
oh my god
I never knew
I never knew...

Why the fuck are people reccomending macbooks? You realize that they are 3x more expensive?

X220 Tablet with IPS

I actually like the dimness, and the burn in is actually pretty nice sometimes.

thinkpads are expensive too. they cost over 1000 new

Who the hell is buying a x220 new? We're obviously talking about buying used.

Fun trick: all X220 Tablets are IPS

If you can live with the ~10% lower CPU performance there's no reason to even buy the regular X220

Probably because that tablet has to use high-dpi scaling to make anything readable.

>and the burn in is actually pretty nice sometimes
Textbook example of Stockholm syndrome.

so then why complain about res on a 12 inch screen

>Stockholm syndrome
I don't think you know what that means.

It's actually quite nice. If it had a higher resolution it would require scaling which I despise. 120PPI is the sweet spot for laptops. For desktops it's 90PPI. The TN panel isn't exactly beautiful but it gets the job done. People need to get their heads out of their asses and acknowledge that this is a business laptop. People around here seem to be using their ThinkPads for multi media purposes because they're NEET neckbeards who don't have anything better to do.

What were you expecting? A Macbook is made to consume media (even though Apple tells you otherwise, they haven't been good for anything else since they introduced Unibody) while Thinkpads are business machines, made to be leased in great quantities.

Well now that "child' has one of the most capable laptops ever produced. If not THE most capable. That "child" now has the finest keyboard ever designed for a laptop computer. The "child" now has viewing angles and build quality you won't have on your new consumerbook. Sad. Enjoy your scissor switch chinklet keyboard and godawful build quality. Enjoy your Tim Cook botnet and terrible app-store "environment." Enjoy catching your face on fire.

Just don't take that "child's" machine away once you realize you had it all, and gave it away. Let him use it and see where he can go, likely much farther than you.

Wow. That's just... retarded. You traded a decent laptop for a useless Facebook machine with the most restrictive OS and the most unjustified price tag. Enjoy your self desoldering GPU and glued shit that's bound to break within 5 years.

that's a good summary. a higher res than 768p would only lead to the user scaling the UI to match the size of a 768p UI. it's a 12" screen so text is already pretty small at that low resolution. I'd say:

>12" 768p
>14" 900p
>15" 1080p

these are the perfect resolutions. I mean UI scaling might be a valid option if it didn't limit the user to Windows 10. on windows 7 it's almost impossible to get it right with every program and on linux you're pretty limited in that regard too

hopefully the retina one :)

>at the expensive
Don't you mean: ``at the expense''?

>2011+6
>still not having a modded 12inch 1080p ips with great viewing angles
*something something laughing anime girls*

The last good Macbook

Why is everyone so upset about viewing angles? It's not so hard to find the sweet spot and the color distortion helps you keeping your shit private when working in public.

the screen on the x220 is retarded, I'll give you that. TN viewing angles are pretty terrible and all. But you have to consider the pricing and the whole rest of the machine. You're not going to buy it for the screen.

I'm running Linux on my 1440x900 X201s and scaling in KDE works well. I had troubles with it in firefox and chrome but Opera works fine.

>this
the screen is perfect for what it's been intended for

Don't know about TN but I have the same resolution 12' screen in x240 and I can't say a bad word about it.

not as bad as on T420,T420s, etc..
X220 can take an IPS panel at least

>TN
absolute trash and I haven't even seen one live
>IPS (b1)
decent, some ghosting issues
>IPS (b3)
decent++, a little bit crispier colors when compared side by side to (b1) and no ghosting

is the b3 worth 80€?

I can't just find it cheaper. I'm not gonna lie, the angles on the TN panel are bothering me quite a bit.

Yes, it is as good display (except for the resolution), but keep in mind that these are 6 year old laptops that go at tops 250€ for good condition refurbished ones, of course it's not going to be worth it.

the screen is shit, everything else is great

if you want to do nothing but watch movies, get something like a Toshiba 2

Or you know, just replace the display of normal X220.

>tfw X220t has IPS
feels good mang

to be fair, that is not entirely trivial. I mean, if you aren't retarded you can do it, but most people are.

At least you haven't tried to replace/clean the fans. X-series is hell for cleaning. Need to disassemble everything.

I was given an x220 with a dead fan, I replaced the fan and it's been working great.
It is considerably more troublesome than my T61 to disassemble but I certainly wouldn't describe it as hell, you've got to take into account that it's an ultraportable, lenovo's instructions are pretty good.

I have an x230 with a tn display and it's not that bad, not good but I don't know what these guys are talking about

if it's anything like the T420, it's garbage

Hi Linus!

because you never use 2006-2008 TN laptop.. they have better quality TN screen than low quality TN panel after 2010..

ThinkPads have awful screens. There's no way around it.

ThinkPads have absolute dogshit screens. I'm typing this from my X1 Carbon that literally split in two because the hinges catastrophically failed. The keyboards are wonderful but everything else about Jewnovo is fucking TRASH. Will never patronize that dogshit company again.
