Lightning was a good idea that was just USB in a different form that ended up breaking more often than microUSB.

It's like you haven't been paying attention to how sockets are laid out in rooms nowadays. If you compare them historically, you can see that this has been following trends closely over the course of the past fifty or so years. Even if your building is old, it has always been common to have a small light source like a table lamp or floor lamp beside the sofa and the layout shows this.

Apple lets you use any valid USB-C cable to charge the Macbook. Companies like HP, on the other hand, require proprietary power adapters to charge their USB-C laptops, despite using a standard connector.

I don't like proprietary, but the Lightning connector is 100x better than micro-USB. I've never broken a Lightning connector, not I've gone through a half dozen micro-USB plugs because something always deforms and the connection is no longer solid. I'd rather pay the premium for a well made connector than have to buy several inferior ones.
