The specified device name is invalid. It says that right in the image.

for what reason
Have fun trying to remember the name of the folder, let alone typing it out
>hurrrrrrr such suprior OS
Thinkpad T420 with HD+ Display doesnt have this problem.

Don't reply to me again.
Can I reply to you're wifes son?
The botnet is on to you user.
AUX IS CIA

It's just because devs at Microshaft and Applel can't be bothered to remove decades old stuff from their OSes.
I can.
apple does it constantly because they don't care about backwards compatibility. That is why some apps stop working after an upgrade.

how did you remove the stop light buttons?
Kill yourself, dick wrinkle.
like this
pls
This is a part of Windows' legacy. You can't create folders whose names match system devices. Other invalid folder names include CON, PRN, CLOCK$, NUL, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4, LPT5, LPT6, LPT7, LPT8, LPT9.
c:\>mkdir \\.\c:\con or c:\>md\\.\c:\con
c:\>DEL \\.\c:\con
c:\>rmdir \\.\c:\con

kek; good one
do you per any chance also know the special names for "my computer", "recycle bin" ? there was a special string that could be used to create them
>windows
Found your problem
What would happen if I connected the drive to linux, created one of aforementioned folders then booted windows?
Kill yourself, you dumb fucking shit stain.
t. wintoddler
seeing as the os is basically a hierarchical model database -- ie. regedit.exe
i am sure this is possible though it may cause corruption on finders and headers... so at least backup your registry before dropping or changing values
fuck if i know, sounds interesting though i will try it

there were some special strings for them. it didn't cause any problems, but the folder would appear as computer or recycle bin and would link to that place. if you created folders inside of it you could only access them if you knew the full path because they couldn't be listed. was a nice way to hide stuff
>try to copy files from your linux machine to a windows machine
>cant do it without renaming files because windows is fucking retarded and doesn't like some of your filenames
thats nothing. create a git repo with 2 files having the same name, but one in lowercase and one in uppercase and checkout the repo on windows, change one of those files, and add and commit them them again
like this?
HIDE
attrib -s -h “C:\Users\WinUser1\Desktop\TopSecret”
UNHIDE
attrib +s +h “C:\Users\WinUser1\Desktop\TopSecret”
Except that's wrong, shit for brains. Kill yourself.
>"This is a long filename. So long it may cause windows to get fucked, but windows works really, really well. I can play games like a pro and I like things just werking (sic). I also love browsing the internet using Google Chrome because only cool people use chrome - not firefox or internet explorer. I am really gay and I make long filenames to be cool like a hacker. I am such a hacker I watch Mr. Robot and then go and browse the Mr. Robot subreddit on Reddit. I love Reddit so much. Not my president."

no idea what that does, i don't even have a windows vm and haven't touched windows since xp sp1 came out

>linux doesn't know what I mean because it's fucking retarded and doesn't like some of my input
It's almost like you have to work with the OS and act within it's bounds, whether or not you would like those bounds to be changed is another discussion entirely. pick a land next time
is this bait?
>copying files across OS's without first knowing the basics of naming conventions for those OS's
Is he not retarded? Am I wrong here? How can you defend that?
expecting it to support all names is not retarded, that's just being reasonable.
>naming conventions for filenames
1. You don't even fucking know what the word convention means
2. I hope English isn't your first language
3. I know what you're trying to say and it's fucking stupid. The point is that any restriction is fucking dumb
4.
w...what happens?
>any restriction is fucking dumb
It sure is, not knowing what the restriction even is? More so.
>try to write a bash script that handles every user cases
>have to quote absolutely every string containing filenames because they might contain shell keywords that could turn my script into a file system destroying nightmare
cool fallacy bro you're a fucking idiot
You can't do that in Windows either. Windows filenames are made to be UNIX-compatible in pretty much everything but command line shells. You can enter filepaths such as /folder/file in any Windows software and, unless they're specifically programmed to reject it, it will work, with the presumption that / is the drive of the working directory.
>that's just being reasonable
And look where that got you, I don't lose files because I understand that Windows has certain restrictions, I'd like to think that people on this board knew that, apparently not.
one file will be missing
Don't let the triggered hit your lost files on the way out, I'm an idiot who doesn't have issues copying files.
What does that make you
expecting windows to not break everything is retarded
wew! epic, i sure didn't guess that would happen
You can do that using Bash for Windows. Explorer will list the file/folder, but anything you attempt to do with them, including reading, writing, moving, etc. will fail, often with a misleading error message.
>expect a reasonable service
>don't get the reasonable service
>haha look at the retard expecting reasonable service :^)
have you ever worked on a bigger project where some people use windows ?
Recycle bin shows as
$Recycle.bin/
S-1-5-21-userid1/
S-1-5-21-userid2/
in the root of each partition. You can get your user id on from the registry.
Doing this right now. I'll be back. If Windows kills itself I'm blaming you.
>Wasting several hours to change the fucking folder background
>Looks like an autist fingerpainted on your screen

I miss them.
It just does weird shit. Notice how it failed to change the permissions but did it anyway and had no effect.
Sorry it took so long, I'm terrible with video stuff and when I finally got the 150 seconds video down to 3MB, it turned out Sup Forums also has a time limit.

Woah, alright then that's pretty neat.

Just use a different scripting language, like python then. Or try fish shell.

ok, well i am not really a programmer i really need to learn how to read machine code and language. i am more a database guy.
I believe there should be an open standard of windows os; or make windows a bsd license -- an open windows platform is great also their souces must be 100 percent free software.
>implying
There's a trick for folders, you've to rename the folder (right click > rename) adding a "-" symbol before last character ("AU-X") and then rename again (always right click > rename) adding a dot (".") after it ("AU-X.") but works only in windows 7.
You are a big guy
Alex you're fucked
That is a bafflingly specific bug to exploit
how the fuck did you even find out about that shit
Its worse on fat32 filesystems, you cant even have a fucking file with : in its filename
I was too lazy to bother typing the full word. So I tried shit.
This was our favourite way of hiding games on lab computers in college.
When I graduated and got a job, the sysadmin called me over one day because he was having trouble viewing a folder on the IIS webserver.
It turned out that we'd been hacked and under about seven layers of folders with device names and non-printing ASCII control characters, someone had uploaded a bunch of ripped music CDs and we were getting downloads from all over the planet.
Once I found it, it was easy to remove but we just nuked the machine to be sure.
>still got the mp3s, it was Mylene Farmer. Pretty good desu
>ALT-255 a folder, put a transparent icon.
Worked for over 3 years on my old school.
or a whitespace character? this is standard practise
there are better things to do for fun, like playing games
wait
Having a dozen CRTs in a small room with shit ventilation doesn't sound like fun though
You can, just not using Windows explorer. Thanks nutella
Having 2 files with the same name but different case is considered very bad practice even in OSes with full case sensitivity though.
>windows
>can't make a file that starts with a dot

It works for me OP
If I copy text files to PRN from cmd, will Windows print them like DOS did?
Works On My Machine ;)

Maybe it's because AUX cord or something?

You can create that folder all you want, just get a different file manager.
