If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Can someone suggest a terminal font that looks like lemon but actually scales to a size larger than 9?

Try tewi or gohu.

Here's a nice list of bitmap fonts with previews:

How do I rice Debian with GNOME?

Why would anyone want a separate /home partition? Isn't it just a waste of space?

Nothing beats terminus

You can keep it while installing different distros

You have 10 seconds to explain why you aren't using btrfs or xfs.

Terminess beats it (Terminus patched with powerline glyphs).

>powerline
toys for kids

I've never heard of them.

I am running Lubuntu which comes with Firefox. In the repo I see something called 'firefox-dev'. Is that the Developer Edition of FF?

mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/developer/

Here is the output of a search of my repo:
pastebin.com/kLjEQDgQ

Can someone who has actually run it, give the pros of running Gentoo? If I'm going to buy a new rig with some extra cores I don't use most of the time, why not compile?

Its a meme.

He said people who've actually run it

No, it's the development package of Firefox.

Thank you.

Sounds cool!

Pros:
-Everything is optimised for your system. The benefits of this aren't very large though- programs might run 0.1% faster or something.
-you have complete control over everything when a program is compiled. IE, remove gtk support and force qt if that's what you want.
-you learn more about how the system works
-you get packages quickly

Cons:
-waiting for compilation is an inconvenient timesink. You probably should compile your whole system again if there's a gcc update.
-very confusing for new users.

How long would an average update take on a modern (4 but likely 6 core) processor?

Thanks user

gentoo is a meme
if your hardware is old, it's nice to have gentoo because the 0,0001 additional speed
if your hardware is old, it's bad to have gentoo because the 100000,0 additional waiting times till compiling is finished
if your hardware is new, you don't need the additional speed
if your hardware is new, compiling is faster
:^)

"average update" is meaninless
most updates will take five minutes
updating a browser or the kernel will take probably an hour on a good processor. recompiling the whole system can take 3 hours. Compiling is one of the few tasks that actually multithreads well, so modern 6-8 core AMD processors are actually better than intel for gentoo.

What's a distro that isn't a meme?

Not him, but it depends no how long you go between updates.
When I first started on Gentoo I was enthusiastic and updated daily. It took only a few minutes unless a huge package like firefox got pulled in or something (but if that's a problem you can always just get the binary version of larger packages, firefox-bin and not worry about compiling)

But now, with my 8 cores after going like 2-3 weeks without updating it can take like 2-5 hours I think, but I don't really time it I just do it over night.

lol get a load of this fag. I bet he doesn't even know what USE flags are, or why he has to re-install Ubuntu every 6 months while the Gentoomen sit comfortably on their 10yr old installs

>Not him, but

Good job dude, you're totally fitting in. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

This is what I'm thinking. If I have a couple extra unused cores, whats the drawback? I could just update the thing while streaming a movie to my TV or something.

i just installed visual-studio-code from aur but there is no visual-studio-code package installed?
wtf is this shit?
when i search for it there is nothign

Yeah you can do that. I've even played games like CS:S while compiling updates without problems.

Im trying DeadBeef out.
How do I show the playback queue? And how do I delete partitions (splitter, vbox, hbox) on design mode?

With my new Ryzen being 8-core and Windows 10 being spyware I think the conditions are perfect to install Gentoo and never look back. Only thing is I can never store something on my file system I'm afraid to lose because I'm bound to fuck something up due to inexperience.

what are the kernels and graphics drivers on gentoo like? kf i get, say, an RX480, will i get the nicest amdgpu/amdgpu-pro drivers soonish?

>there are distros with visual studio in the repos
where went everything so wrong

there is official verson for linux, i dont see problem faggot

I say we give Linus credit first and start calling it, "LinGNUx"

niggers like you are why i am gonna install bsd

I got this today attempting to update my Majaro installation. Anyone know how I can fix this? Some command line Fu, or something?

Dumb phone poster.

According to forum.manjaro.org/t/help-i-cant-upgrade-xorg-server/18752/11

sudo pacman -Syu --force may fix it.

You can see for yourself packages.gentoo.org/
Gentoo is usually pretty up to date on things.

Thank you, user. many times, I search for the error message text, and usually find conversations that are WAY above my skill level, leaving me with more questions than answers. I'll search again before asking again. Your info seems to have worked, although I did get a 'Arming ConditionNeedsUpdate...' message after running the command. I've seen this before, and it lead me to one of those high-level discussions I mentioned. If I understood what I read, it's nothing to worry about.

Thanks again.

OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, fantastic, under appreciated distro

Any Ncmpcpp masters on? Currently, if I right click with a mouse inside of a Ncmpcpp terminal, it plays the track under the cursor. I want to change that so it pauses/plays the current song. How do I change that?

Arch is just a stepping stone.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

nice assumption there

To what?

In other news, I'm running arch on a chromebook and it's having problems waking from sleep. It's non-responsive, black screen, nothing written to journalctl. 4.10.2.

Linux is just a stepping stone.

>Arch is just a stepping stone.
>Linux is just a stepping stone.
yep. to macOS.

I just installed Kubuntu,

What Music Player should i use?

Good thread.

Good post.

Install kde neon

I don't think it's possible with the config file.
Look at the source, find the line which assigns the mouse button action and change it to something else.

GNU is just a stepping stone.

To what?

Freedom!

proprietary software

Should I pay special attention to the partition scheme if I use a 4TB HDD to just store videos, photos, other stuff and nothing else?

Is "update-alternatives" specific to Debian-based distributions?
If not, what are some examples from other distros?

How could I scale pic related without loosing quality? Since it is pixelart, it should work somehow with imagemagick or gimp, right?

Only Debian does that and from reading about it, it's a huge, unnecessary hack.

debian-administration.org/article/91/Using_the_Debian_alternatives_system

And all distros based on Debian.

I'm looking to move my paper schedule to my PC and I don't want to fall for le botnet.
So what open and free solution will grant me my WISHLIST.

behold my WISHLIST:
-calendar with calendar things
-able to synch between pc and phone
-not not botnet

*not not
not

Thinking of using Xubuntu as my first Linux, I heard Mint (the usual reccomended babby's first) is a bit lacking in features and too "barebones", what do you guys think?

It's ok, most of them are, don't overthink it.

Why have none of you registered this domain?

Why some people on Sup Forums keeps calling RSM a commie? He's not forcing anyone using gnu/linux.

they don't understand the concept of sharing things and contributing together to the same thing.
Also they think people do it for free on their free time.

If they don't get money from it immediately they won't understand

They draw the connection to the actual communism as a theory, socialist states like the USSR didn't call themselves commie because unlike with westerners the term had an actual ideological meaning.
Socialism was meant to help society transform it self to communism. If you think the totalitarian societies under socialism were unsustainable, you will be twice as sure actual communism was impossible.
The idea of doing things for free for the community with no money being part of the process was the actual goal. An anarchist utopia of free shit, love and no classes.
The joke is on the people that call him a commie, because if free software was communism we'd have achieved the impossible dream socialist societies died chasing.

Very helpful, indeed.

me again,
I came up with the following, I have a radicale server running on my pc which will host my calendar, I will access it through lighting and through a sinc thing I put on my droid.
The only issue right now is how the fuck will my droid access my pc when I'm not in my residence where it has a stable local network address.
the search continues...

Underrated kek, thanks user.

Americans are easy triggered for things like that due to their history. Just ignore; it's Sup Forums babble.

Copyleft is communism and evil.

Ballmer pls.

idk user, maybe some windows users don't understand the concept of free software being free instead gratis, on topic: gnu.org/philosophy/selling.en.html

What are recommended drawing tablets for linux?

electronic devices

Is source mage any good? it seems childish but I like the style and "spells"

Take a look at their packages. They're ancient.. definitely fits the theme though. I doubt the devs even use it as their main distro

So there are no drawing tablets that work with linux?

ok, ive installed arch and im on the internet. the only other thing i want to do is download the game nethack from the AUR. can someone tell me how?

How do I get Xbone gamepad support in Fedora? It seems like they dont have kernel support for it enabled for whatever reason.

use aliases so your package manager have the same syntax and you're done.

Their package manager seems to be interesting but it's just a hobby and I don't think devs targets source mage to be usable one day

>>use aliases so your package manager have the same syntax and you're done.
pretty neat idea, actually

It seems very interesting but for the sake of using linux and learning it and then wasting my days on the internet is it useful? Asking for a friend,

Why would you want to download nethack from the AUR and not the official repos?

How good is wacom support in Linux?

Pretty good, depending on the model.

What are the recommended models?

Don't take my word as gospel, do some of your own research, but I'm pretty sure almost everything from Wacom is supported reasonably well. I'd recommend just trying to find a tablet you want, and then looking up how well it is supported rather than doing the opposite.

i was under the impression it was not in the official repos.

I have no clue where you got that idea, it is.
