Please help me pick a new OS that is out of the box secure and is pleasant to use....so far I've been considering the following....
ReactOS Pros: Like windows before the cancer went metastatic Cons: It's in alpha....
OS X Pros:Nice design more secure out of the box than Linux. Unix-like Cons: Expensive(hardware). According to Vault 7 release it's pretty compromised as well...
Linux Pros:Lots of variations, many of which have a nice design, lots of compatible software compared to Unix Cons: Not very secure out of the box. Tons of Vulnerabilities according to vault7
OpenBSD Pros: Very secure defaults....is free...open source Cons: Shitty default interface which can be upgraded to gnome. Lots of compatibility issues.
Solaris Pros: It's not Linux, but still compatible with more than OpenBSD Cons: Almost as many vulnerabilities as Linux. Not open source. Still not compatible with a lot.
Windows 8.1 Pros: No Cortana Cons: It's still Windows
Let Me know what you guys think of the choices...feel free to add some I didn't mention!
From what I hear Void or a BSD is the way to go. I was going to suggest Arch because it gets updates very quickly, but the security of it's bleeding-edge patches are questionable. I hate Debian Stable, but maybe that could be in the running.

Wasn't aware of this Void distro...sounds interesting; def going to look into it.

Windows 7.

Why not Win10 Enterprise LTSB?
Nathan Cox
OS/2
Jacob Sanders
Windows 7 or Windows 10 LTSB.
Benjamin Wilson
Windows 7 or maybe macOS + Thinkpad/compatible hardware.
Tyler Thomas
How do you get LTSB if you're not an enterprise?LOL
Jordan Brown
I'm willing to make the switch to Mac but only if it's really the best option
Ethan Clark
why ask for advice on what OS to choose while posting a list of incorrect assumptions stated as facts for us to go by?
Jose Perry
>How do you get LTSB if you're not an enterprise? You download it, how elese could you get it??
let me guess you're one of those idiots who buy windows right lmao
Wyatt Smith
I encourage you to correct the assumptions if they are wrong
Cooper Ortiz
While I'm not morally opposed to doing it, for reasons I can't go into I have to use a legit license. Any way to get Microsoft to sell me one?

I switched my laptop from Win7 to FreeBSD for security reasons just as a trial, and I've kept it on there for the last 3 months now. It has most of the stuff I need (KDE, but it supports a bunch of desktops including Gnome, home drive encryption, Firefox, LibreOffice).
Some possible cons: Not as much software as Linux, no official AMD drivers (may have changed in the last couple years), shitty flash support (but you can get it working through a Linux emulation mechanism that I haven't messed with much).
Jace Allen
Did you see the Vault7 release....tons of FreeBSD vulnerabilities, and the only thing related to OpenBSD was download instructions...I don't love gnome though desu
>>"The OS contains numerous embedded biblical references including a program called AfterEgypt which allows users to "communicate with God" through an oracle."
Well shit, I doubt any other OS's come close to offering anything like THAT...we have a winner
Julian Sanchez
Plus by offering no network support it guarantees the best possible OOTB security imaginable... and those VGA/ASCII graphics make for a great UX!
Noah Morgan
I read a bit of it but not the specifics for each exploit. Generally for a desktop setup I considered it pretty safe since I don't have any ports open to the internet and I run all my shit as a standard user. I guess now I have to check it out and see.

Win 10 LTSB still includes "diagnostic" keyloggers running in the background
