Where should i look to buy one?
what exactly is the appeal of these things??
>Where should i look to buy one?
2007
If you have to ask no detailed answer will ever satisfy you. It's simply something people like.
what is the appeal of an smartphone
For texting people, youtube and reading short things? I dont get what this thing has over a laptop, its not like you need to program so badly you have to be able to do it at all times...
so v. tempting
Why do you need to be attached to youtube and "reading short things" and text messaging all the time? Can't you wait until you get to a real computer to communicate with others you don't need to immediately contact, or just call them?
Thanks I just ordered one.
>No joystick
I just need something with 5' screen that I can connect to external monitor, and run lakka.
>not already owning a GPD Win
>running linux/lakka with it's shit cores instead of a proper front end on windows
>Where should i look to buy one?
kek
chink shills in full force again
>no LTE
>$600
lmfao
What are the alternatives?
Pyra? Smack Z? Not even out yet if ever.
Lakka is a front end for libretro.
Why would you need botnet 10 running when all you need is to play pokemon emerald.
Then get any Android handheld
>Android handheld
Why?
If I want to use an android any phone would do.
I want UMPC that I can run several OS on it.
But you just said you want a handheld for pokemon emerald
>unironically playing 300bux for Atom based machine
Then even PSP 3000 would do.
Basically my point is why compromise when you can get better options.
Exactly, why compomise with a shitty Lakka handheld if you can get a fully fetch Windows handheld with far more possibilities
>being poor
>not wanting a handheld machine more powerful than a C2D from 8 years ago in your pocket
Nobody is forcing you desu
>shitty Lakka
>[citation needed]
What does it do better?
Windows will always have better support for software and you're not locking yourself out from Windows games and better emulators
>inb4 I'm scared Microshit is going to spy on me playing my Pokimen
You seriously think that?
Lakka is a front end for libretro, the same program you'll be using on windows, except it won't use 1.5GB of your 2GB ram.
I was thinking of making an emulation machine with RPi, but didn't find decent screen.
>Lakka is a front end for libretro, the same program you'll be using on windows
No, Lakka is a Linux OS dedicated to running libretro.
No, you don't want to use shit like libretro, it has awful cores and performance/configurability, a dedicated emulator with a multi emulator frontend like EmulationStation is far superior.
Also, Windows won't use anywhere near 1.5GB on a 2GB system, already running on a 4GB system like those depicted in this thread it only uses around 600MB idle. Not to mention it's caching for better performance.
>I was thinking of making an emulation machine with RPi, but didn't find decent screen.
Then use something proper like RetroPie with dedicated emulators at least.
Get a GPD if you can stand literal chink shit quality with no battery life or wait for the dragonbox pyra if you want something to last.
>shilling GPD
>hating freedom
>chink shit quality with no battery life
You own one?
No battery life? I think the only handheld with better battery life is the Shield, having a few more hours, else 6 hours for emulation or 3 hours for heavy gaming is not bad, far more than a Switch at least.
>wait for the dragonbox pyra if you want something to last.
>Pyra
>good quality
>ARM
>ever
Kek, Pyra will be the quality of the Pandora, aka 3D printed shit. If it even ever comes out, they have been working on it for several years without any progress, it's outdated ARM.
When the GPD Win was announced they went full buttmad on their forums, thinking it can't be done, that's the level of tech standard they are thinking about when building the Pyra.
Also, Pyra/Pandora is not a UMPC.
Don't get a GPD Win, it's a very niche product for a niche market and most people don't know or want to mess with it.
Also, I don't hate freedom, I just like my things to work and work well, doesn't matter if the software is free or proprietary.
Same like with the Win, I wouldn't care if it's made in/by, Japan, China, US or UK, it just happens to be the best on the market for it's purpose right now.
>Pyra
>600 eur for the base model
>worse specs than the 300 eur GPD Win
>Kek, Pyra will be the quality of the Pandora, aka 3D printed shit.
Why are you so mad? The Pandora was a great device with increadible performance for the shitty hardware (Pyra is similar in that regard: youtube.com
>Pyra/Pandora is not a UMPC.
It's not when you're splitting hairs. Since you run a desktop OS on both, I'd consider it a UMPC, despite not being made by Intel/Microsoft (who originally coined the term for their x86-based products). That being said, there are tons of x86 games that have been ported to the Pandora alone, inlcuding Diablo 1+2, Half Life, Serious Sam 1st+2nd, RTCW, Jedi Outcast + Academy etc. repo.openpandora.org
Agreed.
GPD is fantastic the only down features are the terrible battery life and the OS lock.
If the SD card slot allow booting that might be solved though.
>600 eur for the base model
>worse specs than the 300 eur GPD Win
Well, it has a longer battery life, more freedom (+better linux support) and more dedicated software (a more active community). It's not really for playing indie-games and in terms of emulating retro-games it's about as good as the GPD Win. Really depends on what you're looking for. I tried the GPD Win too and the build quality isn't any better than that of the Pandora tbqh.
>Where should i look to buy one?
Your nearest mental ward
>Why are you so mad? The Pandora was a great device with incredible* performance for the shitty hardware
I'm not mad, I actually like the Pandora, but it's nowhere a high quality device, the Pandora was actually very bad quality.
It was a cool device for it's time, I agree.
>It's not when you're splitting hairs.
>I'd consider it a UMPC
PC in UMPC means PC Compatible and not just a Personal Computer, it's a term that decades old.
>GPD is fantastic the only down features are the terrible battery life and the OS lock.
>If the SD card slot allow booting that might be solved though.
What are you comparing the battery life to? It's far better than a PSP, DS or Switch
8 hours shitposting is nothing special with it, I wouldn't consider that bad.
It has no OS lock, put anything on it you want.
It has literally an open EFI firmware/shell and you can boot from any device you want and long the OS has drivers for it.
>PC Compatible
en.wikipedia.org
>making things up on the internet
>What are you comparing the battery life to? It's far better than a PSP, DS or Switch 8 hours shitposting is nothing special with it
The Pandora has a battery life of up to 18 hours in a smiliar form factor and can be used for shitposting too. In fact my EEE 1005pe from 2012 has ~12 hours battery life and costs about 1/3 of what the GPD win is.
>Well, it has a longer battery life
Better, yes, because it runs a weak SoC and shitty screen. But we are comparing 8 hours to 12 hours here.
More freedom? GPD Win is as free as any desktop PC, do what you want with it if you are a thing for Linux, but why would you limit yourself to your "community software".
Dedicated software?
The Win already has Windows library, you don't need any dedicated software.
>I tried the GPD Win too and the build quality isn't any better than that of the Pandora tbqh.
Did you try one like 3 months ago? At least the Win feels better in the hand, controls feel better, no screeching plastics or cheap display.
>The Pandora has a battery life of up to 18 hours in a similar* form factor and can be used for shitposting too.
Some people report way less. Still, we are comparing numbers most people won't be concerned about, specially if the tradeoff is a lot of performance.
>In fact my EEE 1005pe from 2012 has ~12 hours battery life and costs about 1/3 of what the GPD win is.
What has this to do with anything? Your eee isn't a niche product with size restrictions and gaming functionality, not to mention, again it's several times weaker.
When you live in the smartphone age its hard to understand its appeal but before they were more portable laptops.
i bet you also call macs PCs
UMPC is a development on subnotebooks, people actually called the ultra portables before the UMPC term was a thing
Just because a wikipedia article is not complete on the history of it, they where always PCs as in PC compatible
What about Skyrim, Mass Effect 3 or GameCube/Wii emulation?
A E S T H E T I C S
aka autistic nolife toys
A full desktop OS and a real keyboard in your pocket.
I would make more sense for me to have one of these with cellular data than a smart phone.
Name three pieces of tech you couldn't apply that description to
A dumbphone
A desktop computer
A dildo
keyboard, mouse, graphics tablet
Sorry for the issues. Please send an email to [email protected]. Please put "(your pledge ID + your country)" as the email subject, and attach your indigogo order screenshot and the problem of your GPD WIN. We will try to reply to you soon.
It does?
Dunno, you must have gotten one unit with shitty chink QC then.
I know they won't go over 75C even on the highest load with turbo in a warm room. Note that the throttle speed is 85C. Usually staying in the low to mid 60's for most games/emulators, tasks.
Where do I get pre-historic OS?
No thanks, I deal with resellers, much faster and better support. I don't have any problems though.
I kind of hope GPD do a Switch clone next.
>dat chink shit /csg/ tier thermal paste
at least it was covering almost all of the soc die
>what is Smack Z
>nintendo, a huge company, makes a tablet with a 15W SoC, years of development research, it has active cooling, still gets hot when running underclocked with it's 15W max SoC
>some german kickstarter, literary students, say they will make a device the same size as the Switch, with a 15W SoC that uses 15W+ when turboing, but with passive cooling
Nice one, I love how they know how to rip off people.
>Smack Z? Not even out yet if ever.
They estimate october 2017 and honestly specs seem pretty noice.
They even confirmed it has a 10,000 mAh battery.
>red_1337_star762
Change it to dildo_1337_smackz_shill_metallica1996
But they said May 2017? Did they change it to October now?
>$300-$400 for a shit chinese atom based "netbook" with a gamepad on it and botnet 10
is this thread for real right now?
intel compute stick $100
display $30-80
raspberry pi laptop with battery and controller parts + 3d printed case ~$80
a real netbook you can plug a controller into that is even waterresistant ~$200
then we have this >i bet he's OP
Fuck off gpd win shill, nobody wants your shitty intel "hd" "graphics".
That being said they haven't made a final product yet so I accept that it could flop. I'm not shilling their shit, in fact I won't even pre-order one. I want to see how the final thing performs like. They want to push this copper foam passive cooling gay shit but I think they will have to use active cooling in the end.
Yeah, this made me lose faith a little. But I'd much rather wait, this seems like the only UMPC worth getting desu.
Yet your computer stick or Pi are not even a fraction as powerful and a laptop with a controller is totally missing the point.
Nobody is forcing you to buy it, people who don't have a need for things usually don't buy them, niche things for niche markets cost always more.
>nobody wants your shitty intel "hd" "graphics".
Yet it made more money than the Smack Z did.
Also, I don't think they are devices that actually fit in the same class, one fits in your pocket, the other is a huge tablet.
Graphics aren't really a problem between the two, one has a 720p screen, the other a 1080p screen, both have GPUs that support the most current features, while the Smack Z in in theory several times faster, it will also have to drive 2.3X as many pixels, also one has a bigger screen with higher DPI, meaning running at lower resolutions, the one with the bigger screen and higher DPI will look shittier than the one with the smaller.
shut up shitpusher
It still fits in the UMPC category. Last time I checked UMPC does not require that it fit in your pocket.
They are both UMPCs for gayming, but different size categories.
C
U
C U T E
E
I want to believe, but i'll need to see a prototype of the final product running games before i put any cash down
this
Same appeal a laptop has only another magnitude of portability.
Can't wait
>thinking there's anything wrong with this
People pay twice that for cellphones with even worse processors.
Do you not have a phone?
Fuck that, they need to make a VAIO UX clone
The whole point of the device is that it runs Windows, the whole market is full of linux handhelds
>Fuck that, they need to make a VAIO UX clone
They make gaming devices only
Yet here we are with the pocket coming out. And the UX makes a great gaming device, I play Civilization Sim City on it all the time.
I like the concept of a UMPC and I would like to buy one. What brands should I be looking at to get some good quality?
>Yet here we are with the pocket coming out.
literary a device only useful for dos games
Yeah okay buddy. If that were the case it would've just come with an ARM CPU and DOSBox preinstalled.
>If that were the case it would've just come with an ARM CPU
No
>On systems which provide the i386 instruction set, however, DOSBox can use dynamic instruction translation to accelerate execution several times faster than interpretive CPU emulation.
I still disagree wholeheartedly.
>Civilization Sim City
never heard of it, is it a civilization mod or a sim city mod?
There's supposed to be an & in there
an and in where?
Obviously between "Civilization" and "Sim City"
In your pants.
>Yet your computer stick or Pi are not even a fraction as powerful
Compute sticks are about as powerful. Both are weak as shit atoms.
Nope. Not even close.
Just because it's an Atom does not mean shit, you can't compare a Atom from 2010 to one from 2013 to one from 2015.
What is the best UMPC I can buy for less than 100 dolans?
You don't.
how much is gdp paying you shills?
I want a small computer for shitposting that has a keyboard and built in trackpoint/trackball/trackpad. Tablets are shit and most laptops are too big to fit in my car/g/o shorts pockets.
>everyone who likes a commercial product is a shill
Nice meme
I fully understand your intent, the issue is you're not getting anything for that much. Maybe if you scour Craigslist and get lucky or something.
...
Kek, why the autism?
Does it come with Vista? I want to use Vista again.
Yeah it's just huuuuge. Here's a comparison with the 2014 atom seen in the $100 tablets.
Both are to weak to play AAA games. both are shit compared to a full cpu.
It's a handheld computer, if you're expecting the same performance as a desktop then you're a fucking retard.
