It used to be somewhat hated back in the plasma 4 days because it was pretty heavy, tacky and with a pretty bloated interface in general. Now with plasma 5 is pretty popular and more thanks to neon:
- Good looking by default (at least much more than windows IMO).
- Not aimed to be lightweight but with a much improved use of resources, 400MB for me on boot with neon (this is ootb when installed without removing anything).
- Now kde has a visual design group and all the kde applications are honoring the guidelines, the motto is "Simple by default, powerful when needed".
It has improved a lot in recent years and i would certainly choose kde over windows any day.
