Print it out and put it in a filing cabinet

On a zip diskette

Magnetic tape in environmentally controlled storage

Let the external drive(s) become filled without ever deleting anything. Though that means you shouldn't store just anything.

in hexadecimal?

why shouldn't you delete anything

No fragmentation for example.

How safe are the WD 6TB hard drives? They are selling for $149 on amazon

not bad of an idea

She have ugly piss.

or you could just not use NTFS

where's the funnel?

Get 4TBs on ebay for 80-90 bucks from external WD kits you can tear open.
Then RAID them in freeNAS.

External HDD or SSD

NEXT STUPID QUESTION!

buy esoteric/magick resistant hard drives.

or be a practitioner and create a fortress seal

-Local Storage
>Hard drive in computer

-Network Storage
>Hard drive on the local network

-External Storage
>Hard drive only connected and on while performing backup

-Off-Site Storage
>Drive kept in a different physical location, in case of natural disaster or theft

the only guide you'll ever need

then install trueOS/*bsd hackintosh or linuxdistros with zfs

I've been happy with the reliability of the reds, just the data transfer speeds suck

What would you suggest instead for Windows users, besides FAT32. NTFS is shit I admit when it comes to fragmentation.

I remember the first PC I ever used came with a Quantum drive. I was like 9 and it was an early Pentium. I was really excited when it started up and I saw a message saying "Installed QUANTUM FIREBALL something something", I thought that anything called Quantum Fireball had to be a really awesome video game. I poked around in the programs for weeks looking for a way to play Quantum Fireball.

ext4 - security through (relative) obscurity

magnetic tape

or 128gb microsd

>magnetic tape
The tapes are reasonably priced, but the machines to write on the tapes are not. You need to have massive data storage needs before that becomes a good option.

This is hard to follow

>What's the best way to store my digital data?

ODD/FDD/HDD/SSD/SD
keep it away from light
keep it away from electrostatic, sound waves /EMF, perma/electromagnets (this includes headphones, speakers, and phones)

ALL
keep it dry and away from moisture
well cooled (according to its temperature range)
away from crazy ants or real bugs
avoid storing it in a shaky/vibrating place (beside rpm machines like desk fan)
do RAID backups or offline backups

Additional:
seal any possible entrance for ants/bugs
when using wired external drives keep the cables separated to avoid static from surface.
shield your drives or make a Faraday cage if you really love them
avoid dusty places and keep the store area clean
buy and use cheap CD/DVD/BD blanks for data you use regularly or data you really want to last forever, keep in mind other brands are shit so try them out. I recommend Mdisc although havent tried bc not available where i live.
dunno bout tapedrives or others but try them too.
lastly: keep your place in well balance and exorcised and try fengshui to avoid poltergeist or other immaterial attacks.

NTFS is fine and really fail safe IMO compared to linux file systems.
>NTFS external drives can be disconnected anytime regardless of OS
>linux systems and linux formatted drives defaults write cache and read cache ON which is dangerous

Recovery is really fucking great in NTFS even law enforcement agencies love it

With NTFS, I've read that it leaves gaps between files to allow for small expantions but this expantion never really happens and instead these little gaps get filled with normal files that end up getting fragmented across all these gaps. I use the program "Defraggler" from Piriform, which has a free space defragmenting tool to try and fill these gaps I guess, along with the normal gaps that form from constant filling and deleting of data.

Punch cards.

only annoying thing with ext filesystems is that it has some reserved space thing on by default that can use over 100gb space

Best permanent solution.

Think I would stay away from Dual Layer, if looking for long term storage vs Single Layer 25GB.

Could probably store an entire MP3 in one filling cabinet. Awesome.

It's Japanese so the discs must be real high quality

Used LTO4 machines are about 500, so not too bad

I've been looking at tape drives on ebay now, and see used LOT5 drives going for 200-$300. HP brand. The price of the LTO5 tapes seem to be a bit cheaper than single sided BD-Rs (per GB), at least the no name BD-Rs.

Even LTO3 is good, and drives for that are dirt cheap, less than 100

I know a guy who downloads porn like a mad man. He has like $40/month worth of subscriptions to major porn sites and downloads or rips high quality 1080p/4k hour long videos and stashes them all. Completely uncompressed. The guy just bought 4x6TB hard drives (12TB usable, ,12TB for backup) because his collection is so large. He's already half capacity and it's been like a month.

What would you even do in that kind of situation?l for backup? A shit load of high capacity Blu ray disks? At first I wanted to poke fun at him, but honestly that's like the best way to get used to doing large scale backups, raid array restructuring, etc.

LTO3 tape

Lots of LTO3 tape

Get him to learn the joys of video compression, at the very least.
Seriously now, the guy has a problem, that shit is just plain unhealthy

Yea I told him about tape but the guy would much rather dump $600 per 12TB soon to be released HDDs than pay $$1k for a tape reader and a bunch of LTO3.
Yea I thought so too. I dunno if the dude is porn addicted or he's just a hoarder. He's in a healthy relationship. Seems he gets laid on the regular.

INSUFFICIENT DATA FOR MEANINGFUL ANSWER

No really, everytime i hear this question i remember that Asimov short story, "the last question"

Data retention in optimal conditions

Magnetic tapes/disks = 20 years
Optical media =10/15 years (M-disk 1000 years , but who knows for sure)
NAND flash ???? unknown probably just 10? years

Would it be possible to 3d print scaled down punchcards?

This is easy to tweak as needed.

You are basically describing a cd or DVD

You can free up those blocks if so desired. I did it with my media drives, since they're full and don't need that reserved space.

What a shitty diagram. Funny how my Seagate externals are still alive after 7 years while I've had both WD internals and externals fail on me. Anecdotal, yeah, but it's something to keep in mind. You could get screwed with any of them.
So far, HGST has been great.

I'd love to have tape.
Maybe I should get in on that.

yes. but it would be stupid.

I have a hackintosh so NTFS won't work for me.

Is exFAT any good?

How much shit do you guys have saved and why? I don't get how some people can just have so much needless shit saved. For what purpose?

Mainly photos and 4k videos from travelling

...

Me neither. I just bought a 1TB drive for my new build cause may as well for the price (wasn't much more than 500GB), but honestly I've never had a drive filled with more than ~300GB

I want a local internet for browser in it safety.

>Maxtor
0 arguments here, holy fuck.

About 12TB give or take, all backed up, but still not backed up enough.
Why do I do it? I don't know.
Non-meme answer: I like to have things on my local storage. Streaming is good for a watch, but having it all accessible at all time is very convenient.
Meme answer: I can't predict the future of the Internet with how many goys there are in power, they could fuck everything up to appease their overlords.
