Tablets are more useful than laptops in 2017 and if you disagree, you're mentally challenged.

>more efficient hardware

>doubles as a really nice e-book reader, including textbooks unlike a kindle

they literally make laptops more like tablets now because of these exact reasons. a 10" tablet with a nice case is way more practical than a laptop ever will. everything about a laptops design is a compromise.

Dell keyboards are in 3rd place.

First Model M

Second most things Logitech.

>optical drives
>expandable storage
>powerful graphics chips
>better processors (4 x86 core+/xeon tier)
>can run things tablets can't (e.g. VMs, see above)
>larger screens
>more connectivity options (LAN, VGA/HDMI, more than 1 usb port)
>relatively easy to fix
>keyboard (doesn't take up half the screen)
>keyboard (physical)
Probably a lot of things I've missed.

You're right but the pic you posted is only good for playing angry birds.

Surface pros on the other hand are far better than a clunky laptop.

>>more efficient hardware
In what way? They're much less powerful than most laptops, and get about the same battery.

>>stay cooler
Wrong. Tablets, especially metal ones, will get hot as fuck if you try to do anything more than play Angry birds.

>>less expensive
Also wrong. Even an $80 chinkpad shits all over your tablet in every single way except battery life.

>>much more portable
Says the limp wristed faggot who can't carry anything over two pounds.

>>more durable
This is also wrong.

>>typically fanless
Why does this even matter? You can't hear the fans in modern laptops anyways unless you're doing something really CPU intensive on them.

>>doubles as a really nice e-book reader, including textbooks unlike a kindle
So do laptops.

i'd rather not have something to hold that gets to 90C just to run discord thanks

lol having fun huffing the sweaty balls stench from your shitpad i see?

I'm actually using a MacBook Pro. Nonetheless, suck my sweaty balls.

>i'd rather not have something to hold that gets to 90C just to run discord thanks
Correct. ipads have no active cooling whatsoever, this is why surface pros stay so cool.

But the best tablets are laptops.

>can't change the batteries

but you don't go anywhere for that long without being able to just use your charger anyway

batteries are consumables
they only last a few years before you begin to feel the loss in their capacity

>more efficient hardware
totally wrong
>stay cooler
only because they are significantly less powerful
>less expensive
sometimes
>much more portable
wrong, you can't fit them in your pocket, you need to carry them around in something just like a laptop
>more durable
totally wrong
>typically fanless
true but again it's only because they are less powerful
>doubles as a really nice e-book reader, including textbooks unlike a kindle
true but you can read shit on a laptop just as easily

Did you just make this shit up?

>using anything other than a smartphone and a desktop
>ever

tablets are for lurking and laptops are fore posting
a
desktops are for nerds and gay-mers
phones are for eber-e-one!!!

Tablets are great when you want to lay down and fap.

I might get this soon. Anyone has an opinion on it?

>Tablets are great when you want to lay down and fap.
Nah, phone VR headset and a bluetooth mouse is way better for that.

Apple just announced a cheaper 9.7 iPad today, might cop it.

Anyone know if theres a big difference between the new announced iPad and the iPad Pro of the same size?

I agree.
I gave my mother a laptop and only thing she does with it, is play some damn flash games, watch movies, use facebook and read emails.
That's it.
Tablet would be infinitely better for little stuff like that.

>way more practical than a laptop
Yeah it's great trying to remote into a real computer and fix things on that dumb fuck on screen keyboard. It totally beats a real keyboard that doesn't fuck over half the screen and leave out important keys.

The iPad is entry-level.
Worth getting if you don't have an iPad or if the one you have is pretty old.

The iPad Pro supports the Apple Pencil, the keyboard thing, has a faster processor and a very nice screen.

I agree, but I already own a laptop that fills all my needs, no need to switch.

How do they pump that water around? Does the expansion/contraction of phase transitions provide some sort of flow action or do they have a cute little pump somewhere in there?

can I agree but still be mentally challenged?

honestly with the new one starting at $300, i might pick up a used/refurb ipad down the line just for the hell of it. i've never owned a tablet and still use a 4" smartphone.

My surface pro 4 doesn't ever need to spin up on simple multi tasking like 20 chrome tabs and every office app in use, nor does it get hot

That's just Skylake for you

>more efficient hardware
Efficient in what way, energy consumption? That MAY be true, but energy efficiency isn't the only reason why you use a laptop.

>stay cooler
With a decent fan, this isn't a problem.

>less expensive
Good tablets, such as the Surface Pro 4, are more expensive than typical laptops.

>much more portable
If it fits in a backpack, it's portable enough.

>more durable
Nope!

>typically fanless
A fan isn't really a bad thing...

>doubles as a really nice e-book reader, including textbooks unlike a kindle
That's about the only thing that makes it a more functional product. Try using it for software development.

>>>more efficient hardware
No they're weak as shit
>>stay cooler
Heat is never a problem with modern laptops either
>>less expensive
only matters if you're a poorfag
>>much more portable
They don't fit in your pocket so carrrying one around is no less inconvenient then carrying a laptop.
>>more durable
Not true. Much easier to break because they're easier to drop.
>>typically fanless
Doesn't matter because fans on laptops can never heard.
>>doubles as a really nice e-book reader, including textbooks unlike a kindle
so do laptops

You are the mentally challenged one.

>2017
>optical drives
optical drives haven't been relevant since like 2009

Can't take a desktop with me wherever I go. Can't do computationally expensive work on a phone. The laptop is the ideal middle ground of power + portability.

Tablets and laptops are both shit compared to desktops in 2017 and if you disagree, you literally have down syndrome and should kill yourself. Retard.

They may be more useful as a Facebook machines.

I would like to buy a Zenbook with an nVidia, I want to learn CUDA and to use nVidia for training neural networks.

I agree

Tempted to get a surface book 4 to replace my laptop but I feel I should wait till they announce the 5 and get that instead.

>not having both

That post said relatively. As in relative to tablets.

I am honestly happy with my iPhone 7 Plus + rMBP15. Of course I also have a Ryzen 1700 + 480 for muh gaems.

but you're wrong.

if you can afford get an ipad. Browsing or reading manga in bed is really comfy. I take my to university when i don't really need a laptop, to open presentations or pdfs. Also use it to watch animu on long train trips

you're kind of right, although i'll never buy a tablet when i have my two trusty ThinkPadTM's.
>more efficient hardware
True enough for web-browsing/shitposting, but i dont need efficiency when i got 8cells in my x200t and 9 in my x220.
>stay cooler
i wouldn't know, if it could skype while staying cool to the touch i would be impressed. its not like you're going to encode video on your tablet/ipadTM
>less expensive
some bang for your buck but you're always stuck with sub 12" displays.
>much more portable
sounds comfy as fuck to haul one of those around in my bag but im usually pretty rough with things.
>more durable
giant glass screen more durable? its arguable but i get what you're saying
>typically fanless
one less thing to break.
>doubles as a really nice e-book reader, including textbooks unlike a kindle
I have never tried any e-books so i wouldn't know the difference.

in conclusion
you're barking up the wrong tree half the people on this board don't have enough neet bucks to afford anything in the last 6 years and the other half is rich enough to buy all of the above and then shitpost on Sup Forums why you're an idiot for not buying into the shills.

Sup Forums is the wrong place to ask about tablets as it's frequented by Asperger's Syndrome sufferers who enjoy tinkering obsessively with computers.

Tablets don't really provide an opportunity for tinkering, as they provide slick, secure and reliable access to useful software applications (or "apps") without any complications, so naturally Sup Forums can't see the point of them.

Furthermore, Sup Forums posters tend to have oversized phones, which makes possession of a tablet even more pointless in their eyes. The concept of a book-sized device that you can use on train, bus or airplane without having to squint at has no merit to them since they very rarely travel anywhere.

If pushed, Sup Forums users may grudgingly recommend Windows tablets, as they have a "real" operating system. The fact that Windows is designed for computers with keyboards and mice, and is a terrible touch OS with barely any touch-optimised software, means that these "tablets" are really laptops without keyboards, running software designed for desktops.

Finally, you will hear mention of the Nexus 7 2013. A three year old device with poor build quality and no SD card slot. This is because a few Sup Forums residents dabbled with the device when it was new and exciting, and have refused to move on with the times.

Yeah but I'm the consumer and prefer laptops.

>generalisations and assumptions

>lock-down proprietary consumer shitware
>slick, secure and reliable

I just use a phone when I'm outside. Im 90% of the time indoors anyways so I don't see why I would need a tablet. Its inconvenient at best when you are cozy indoors all the time. I have a laptop besides my desktop PC and I use it to play movies from my TV. That's all the use that thing gets. No wonder its still alive and well after 5 years.
If you can do that with a tablet, then sure. A tablet is better.

>clunky laptop
surfshit is heavier & thicker then a macbook air.

This. I was never an apple fan, but I'm thinking of buying an Ipad to take everywhere and it's easier and more comfortable to see anime/tv shows/surf.

My tablet runs Windows 10.
WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW?

That's one expensive fapstation desu...
Also touch screen and jerking off don't mix well.

>more efficient hardware
Not for my needs.

>stay cooler
Don't care for my needs.

>less expensive
I have a job.

>much more portable
Not an issue for me.

>more durable
Not an issue for me, also questionable claim.

>typically fanless
Don't care about that.

>doubles as a really nice e-book reader, including textbooks unlike a kindle
Don't care about that.

>mentally challenged
Yes, it appears you are.

exactly

op is only correct in the context of people who do nothing besides facebooking. try programming on a tablet

Laptops are still superior in any way (the only two tablets that are worth a shit are surface pro or surface book).
The only thing I use my old samshit tablet is as a second screen for botnet media and a selectable toolbar when I work in PS or AI

>>more efficient hardware
who cares when they're both very efficient to begin with
>>stay cooler
who cares when they're both cool enough to begin with
>>less expensive

>>more durable

>>typically fanless
who cares when you're wearing headphones and/or not a whiny autistic bitch that crumples at the slightest noise
>>doubles as a really nice e-book reader, including textbooks unlike a kindle
who cares when e-books are absolute trash to begin with

OP BTFO

>tell work to buy me a laptop
>They buy me a tablet
JUST
Seriously though the reason I need it is for being able to type while standing and walking around and they got me a fucking Windows tablet

Wrong on all accounts Jungle Jim.
There is nothing you can do on your tablet that I can't do on my phablet and it fits in my pocket. When I need to do real computing tasks, that a phone or tablet CANNOT do, I put the phone back in my pocket and use my laptop or my desktop.

I've been debating whether or not I should buy a new cheap laptop or go with a tablet... then buy a wireless keyboard, mouse, and stand for it.

Which should I go for? The most I do is browse Sup Forums, Youtube, and porn... and maybe Minecraft here and there.

Ya I can see it. Once tablets with Ubuntu become cheap I'll probably ditch my desktop for one

Can i play shadow of mordor or rise of the tomb raider on your "flappy birds" tablet?

Have a comfortable amount of space to draw on.

Both are fine options.

If it's going to live next to the sofa, if you're going to wander about the house with it, if you're going to watch youtube on the loo then a tablet sounds like a good fit.

If it's not going to move abount as much, if you want a nice keyboard, ram, diskspace, then a laptop sounds good.

If you're made of money, get both as you'll use them differently.

>wrong
>wrong
>debateable
>wrong
>wrong
>who cares?
>who cares?

Lag phones are more useful then tablets unless its the surface or something, iPads and android are worthless

Once you add the keyboard and mouse it basically becomes the same as hauling a laptop so I would rather have the extra power and convenience of a fully compatible PC with actual software than an iPad that is completely useless for work.

>everything about a laptops design is a compromise.
True.
Laptops are not ideal for long time use.
The screen is small, so you look down all day which is bad your posture.

They are weaker than desktops, more expensive and usually, you never change stuff like the keyboard or screen.

But compared to tablets?
A tablet is completely useless for most tasks.

Chromebook with a nice screen and core m processor so you can chroot Ubuntu for gaymen

Just buy a X220 instead. It'll last longer than a cheap laptop.
