Why did big companies (enterprise customers) abandon ThinkPad?
Before, every large company way buying ThinkPads by truckloads and now they're not.
Before, you could expect tons of used ThinkPads on various sites for cheap because companies were upgrading, and now thse used computer markets don't have many ThinkPads.

I work for a bank. We are switching to some slick hp laptops.
Lenovo were caught repeatedly pre-installing malware and adware on their laptops, even hiding it in the Lenovo update manager. They redesigned the classic Thinkpad design into a weird Macbook clone. A lot of the things that made Thinkpads great laptops (great keyboards, bullet proof design, so well built they're used in space by NASA) slowly eroded.
Dell and HP have better reputations at this point.

My retard employer (1000+ employees) just buys whatever laptop they can get the best deal on at that moment. As a result we have a mess of Dell XPSs, Latitudes, Lenovo Ideapads, and HP Specters all over the place with not a drop of standardization.
In companies of such scale the decisions are made by the purchasing department based on a list of demands. Basically if it can type and meets some demands they will get the cheapest rather than the most Sup Forums approved one.

I think people overstate the Lenovo thing, companies would keep using Thinkpad if they retained the original IBM look because it's iconic. Not this current design which doesn't please anybody.

It is not about their quality as much as it is about their customer service. They offer very good service for businesses.
I work for a multibillion dollar US grocery company, we're using L460s and X-1 Carbons.
They were overbuilt for their price. The ThinkPad division never was profitable for IBM. When quality was adjusted downwards to fit the selling price by Lenovo, they were no longer a steal, so sales dropped.

My dad's business did that. They used to use ThinkPads, but they now use Dell Latitudes. Why? Because they can't trust a Chinese company.
In the US, the standard choice for business PCs is Dell. In Europe, it's HP.

Where I am in government Thinkpad is still the standard, the problem is likely moreso that upgrading is much slower than it once was.
Most of the laptops in my office are old and slow but we don't have the budget to replace them just because.
My W530 is three and a half years old now.

At comp.sci.101 in Germany, I would guess 1/3 has ThinkPad Workstations. I bought it because it was subsidized and had best value/money
