Internet Shut Down

In one month the entire Internet is shut down.

What do you download?

the information on how to set up a brand new internet

The whole of wikipedia and all of the Sup Forums archives

all the ram in the world and then I download the entire internet in all of that ram

download a bunch of crypto papers so that the internet we build in its place has strong security, privacy, and anonymity guarantees baked into it from the start

Wikipedia, a bunch of infographics, home brew beer recipes

PROTIP: Packet radio.

Bonus points for using moon-bounce so you can get packets from China and shit.

>In one month the entire Internet is shut down.

Source or GTFO.

I'd download all of wikipedia

meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Data_dump_torrents#enwiki

PORN

I'd get a 100 gbits connection, 4 TB hard disks from HGST equaling 60 PB (30 PB for storage and then the same amount for backup) and a few thousand Raspberry Pi for the actual downloading. When done I'd write an AI to go through all the porn and organize it.

what if every tracker is dead before internet.

Torrents aren't the only way of downloading porn

What information would you need to download? If you can set up a home network then you can create your own Internet because the Internet is just that: several networks joined together to create one massive network.

Well, first I buy as many HDD:s I feel like I might need or can acquire.

Then I talk to some friends and agree on meeting up for some filesharing w/o internet.

Then I'll probably first download a lot of anime, it is easy and quick to do. I have a lot of porn already, but some of that, too. I move to music once I've got a lot of porn and anime; music is harder to find and may be slow to download. I will not bother with movies, they can be acquired or loaned as DVD:s/Blu-Rays.

While doing this, I also download lots and lots of books on all the topics I'm interested in. At some point, I grab the entire English wikipedia. I download all kinds of software that I might need: install media, as well. I'd try to grab manuals and guides for many things, but many of those could be bought as well, so it isn't that important.

Nothing. after 1 month without internet, population will run crazy and start destroying the "civilization". After a month of riots damaging infrastructure, tribal anarchy will arrise and priests will convice the mass that hoomanity is better off without the internet. First they'll break every computer and smartphone they can find. They'll storm the datacenters. And then, they'll round up the people with knowhow and burn their hearts in a ceremonial pyre dedicated to the new world order.

Download all books from Project Gutenberg.
gutenberg.org/wiki/Gutenberg:The_CD_and_DVD_Project

Also download CiteSeerX, but that seems to be a bitch though :/

Trick question

If the internet were shut down, it would be due to a lack of use. By that point, we'd probably have global neural networks or some shit that replaced the internet, at which point shutting down the internet would be an act of mercy to aged hardware more than an act of anarchy.

Nothing because the internet is down

Already have everything I want. A few linux bootdisks. IPFS and tox binaries and source code.

mass download
music
movies
porn
books
games
and a way to keep in contact with friends like whatsapp

> and a way to keep in contact with friends like whatsapp
how would your dumb ass use whatsapp without the internet?

you'd need to use texting like in the old days

If the Internet goes down then so do phone networks. Probably not true 10 years ago but now it is.

Uh, care to explain? I legitimately am not very familiar with phone networks, but my old mobile phone works today just like it did in 2001, I'm pretty sure it hasn't started relying on some magical new network.

a car

buy a boatload of chink shit

Mobile phone networks transmit their data through the internet after it has reached the cell towers.

Many home landlines do the same now.

The internet.

That's not how it works retard. You can literally setup your own gsm network and get all your friends on it. Texting and calling will not disappear with the internet.

Nothing.

I kill myself.

Download emulators for every system and as many ROMs as I can. Download all GameFAQs guides so I can actually beat some of the games.

>still haven't horded all the literature, audio, video you'll ever need in a 1000 lifetimes
including but not limited to: banned books dating as far back as the dark ages, every game/emulator/rom that ever existed, all the death/black/slam/thrash/industrial metal ever recorded, all the real deal sex appeal violent af anime from 70s, 80s, 90s, isos of obscure distros like bugtraq (fucking malware laboratories!?), hackintosh, and other shit I can't recall atm, never heard of horror/mob flicks from usa, europe, russia, japan, china, and some from thailand
and backed it all up on several different mediums to ensure its survival
wtf you doing with your life user?

...

It's hypothetical, dipshit. It's like if someone asked what you would want on a desert island.

Fpbp

MODS

Guns, because apparently the civilization is doming to an end.

Long life to the mesh-net

ITT: people who haven't already downloaded everything they will need in case the Internet goes down. You're not gonna get a months warning guys.

>all that expensive shit
>sits on the floor

what did they mean by this?

As much of LibGen as possible.

This is exactly how it works. In the old days a cell tower had a direct line connection to the phone company. Now they just connect the tower to the Internet assuming it is available. If not then it depends on proximity. They use mesh networks also where one tower with an Internet connection can feed other towers in range.

not living in front of a screen like a cuck

all of wikipedia, all of libgen, everything in the arch repositories (set up my own mirror), compilers, documentation and references for every programming language I can think of, decentralised sofware like tor, freenet, zeronet and so on.

archives of all the stuff I've put on the internet that I can find.

ALL the Miku.

>wikipedia
You know encyclopedias exist?

>get packets from China
>it's literally all chink shit offerings

nothing because i dont give a shit

They are connected to a network. Not the internet. You're a fucking moron

I already have 8tb of anime so idk?

only correct answer

...

As in permanently?
It wouldn't fucking matter what the hell I downloaded because 1st world civilizations would fall apart in months. Literally everything critical requires some type of internet access. You wouldn't even be able to drive because the traffic system is all online.

I just can't be arsed to acquire a decent storage setup tbhbbq, would not even be particularly cheap

and without backups, hoarding is totally pointless

M-disk brah.

Most infrastructure networking is not on the internet but on private Fiber/Ethernet/Microwave networks. Which I don't consider part of the internet really.

the internet

>private Fiber/Ethernet/Microwave networks. Which I don't consider part of the internet really.
then you have a really small internet since most of the internet is private (ISP's, Telcos, DNS, Servers...)

>What do you download?
nothing

>not knowing off the top of your head how to set up and network non-(((TCP))) based local w-meshes into a packet radio WAN with full end-to-end crypto for the sole purpose of lainposting with fellow patricians on neo-web1.0 text-only bbses while the now wiredless normies wallow in their tech illiterate filth

ishygddt smdh tbqh desu ne

There is a difference between infrastructure used to access the internet (ISPs etc) and privately own infrastructure which does not even touch the public internet, which is my point. Like networks used to control remote power plants, for example I have two water dams nearby which really only have one control room at one dam, and then remotely control the other dam via microwave. Or fiber networks used to carry broadcast network programming to local affiliates.

How many drive failures do you have or have had?

autism

Waste of space, or is this ingenious fucker waiting for something to actually happen in order to do it and use the space for ultra storage capacity, downloading the entire essential internet?

We'll find out in the next chapter, meanwhile...

Sup Forums learns how to set up their own internet structure based on BBS thread systems, and classic style IRC on landlines, takes a shit on the modern ISP's, disregards international policy, and destroys modern social web structure, forcing everyone to become basement dwellers.

I have this recurring fantasy of using packet radio and EME broadcasting to create a chan style board.

It'd be text only, and we'd call it Moonchan.

I think we all know what the Mascot would be.

>make a porn spider crawler like googlebot but for porn that DDoS the whole internet with porn downloading traffic.

Enjoy yourself

That's MFW this actually happens and they crash the web for a few days internationally.

The captcha system helps to keep the autism in check but with radio there is no captcha system and so we would just get flooded with layers of memes.

Any and all survival guide i can find, all films, books, games and music i can too.
Civilization is clearly going to fall so all i'll need is to survive and to keep myself busy in my shelter.
Hell, with more people in the shelter we coud go back to the glory of lan-gaming, would be pretty cool.

>glory of lan-gaming
LAN gaming was better than nothing but I'm not sure I would call it glorious. Considering the amount of time overhead to set everything up and get people in one place.

Never had that kind of problem though, i worked at a lan gaming center, all i had to do was call my friends after hours and grab some pizza and soda, next 4 to 6 hours wold be filled with gaming, incoherent screaming and lots of junk food. I really miss those days.

>i worked at a lan gaming center
Well not all of us worked at a fucking lan gaming center. Lots of moving of computers, setting up and troubleshooting issues and so on.

>You know encyclopedias exist?
Youre a fucking idiot.

>purchase books worth many thousands of dollars and take up fucktonnes of room and are slower to look into than wiki
>download a compressed mirror of wikipedia which is a handful of gb

Gee I wonder which i will chose

>>You know encyclopedias exist?
>Youre a fucking idiot.
All of human knowledge on two CDs, what more could you need.

>Literally everything critical requires some type of internet access.
it requires some sort of NETWORK ACCESS

you are aware what a private ip is? and how VERY LITTLE networks actually ever touch the internet?

why the fuck are you on the technology board if you dont know your dick from your arse?

Dwarf Fortress and a fuck ton of music.

fuck me i remember dicking around with that in primary school and my mind being blown at how much info they had on tanks

All of archive.org

You are going to need a bigger boat.

>100 gbits connection
where the fuck do you live

If you like dwarf fortress you might like Rimworld, see

>f the Internet goes down then so do phone networks
cellular radio == internet

I am learned, thank you Sup Forums, you bunch of fucking mongs.

In make believe land.

i like you, lets be friends and trade that media through a piratebox

ill have a bunch of speed metal for you

itt: Sup Forums is full of retards who dont know the internet is just a network, not some magical thing that will stop your fucking phones from working.

>upgrade to 1Gbps/200Mbps speed
>create automated wget script
>archive websites from home and work
>plan for a mesh network
>create a mesh network
>host website and go public on joining network
i've planned for years..

>Doesn't realize Wikipedia is often terribly inaccurate bullshit between morons adding rumors as facts, and vandalism

>Calls someone a fucking idiot for suggesting an alternative with professional editors, and strict policies on sourcing the information

If the internet shut down in a month, I'd be happy about two things: 1) I'd never see another post from a dipshit like you and 2) that steaming pile of shit, Wikipedia, will be kill

you fucking dense faggot

technically., neither is your home cable connected to the internet, just to your ISP backbone

with all this monopoly ISP and telephony providers tend to be the same companies in many countries / areas so in essence the digital data is all travelling in the same fiber, cell towers just have dedicated cables to the nearest point, anywhere from a hundred meters to some kilometers and in the end it ends up the same land and oceanic fiber crossing the planet

in the 90s there were copper grids across the land and a mix of satellite and fiver inteconections, so it was a totally separate system for some years, but even on most 3rd world countries if a cellphone or landlide reaches your home, it has at most some lenght of copper until it reaches a fiber backbone point and travels alongside cat gifs

When you have latency measured in hours/days, spam filters get a lot easier.

OP here.

I think it only fair to list what I think I would want. Some I already have.

>movies/tv
This alone takes up a large amount of disc space, but obviously any data horde would have a lot of them. We have to forgo the blu-ray rips here though and get YIFY equivalents.

>books
Likely the most important part of any data collection. I have thousands of books, but I need hundreds of thousands. All topics. From dummie guides on turbo pascal to lesbian literature. Every topic should be downloaded.

>games
Retro games and emulators are the easiest to download here. PC games are spread out to hell and back, but dos box has some nice collections. One also must not forget printouts for board games, though card game rules and the like may fall in books.

>software
Another large collection of various things from utilities like Hiron boot to even old encyclopedias and a lot of OS's.

>data
There is a lot of databases and information out there. Scientific knowledge, NASA data, etc. Some hard to find maybe, but well worth a copy. One example is wiki leaks years ago leaked a logistics report from the Iraq war. Basically an excel file of everything they needed to fight the war. It was very detailed, for example one command "tent" listed all the computer stuff they were using including a color laser printer.

>porn
I'm not going to deny this.

>pics
A large number of photographs exist out there. From nature, to satellite, weather, etc. I don't need every kek frog pic, but a pic of all the animals would be nice to have.

>medical
Engineering and medical knowledge would both be part of books, but medical especially is very important and a vast array of knowledge exists on the subject.

>audio
Again a large number of audio files exist from music to audio books, and even nature sounds. How to learn every language on Earth seems important.

I'm probably forgetting so much stuff.

everything

Nothing. The internet is shut down.

I'd 3D print a gun.

> Downloads thousands of abandonware games
> Downloads DOSBox source code
> Wait for internet to shut down
> Modify DOSBox to have DRM
> Sell DOSBox+Abandonware to friends
> Get rich

americans use periods for decimals, he doesn't have more than one petabyte of storage

Thought it said 52TB of storage.

$672,000.52

It isn't that confusing when done right.
672000 and 52 cents

52 Tb aint that much.

Still respectable, as I'm currently sitting at like 11TB

well, of course, and I don't have dozens of petabytes sitting around.

Probably 50Tb would be enough to 'entertain' a person for plenty of time, depending on the content, but as far as say, backing up the web, that seems a paltry volume, miniscule and easily exceeded, giuven the sresources.

But getting the resources is always an issue.

As for me, the connexion here and all, if I had a month to go, I'd be hard pressed to download a whole Tb even, the bandwidth is so small.

*sigh* life is interesting.

compressed text-only wikipedia is 10GB last time I checked
