Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.

>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.

From previous thread.
Yes, even H.264.
It could be because there's no dGPU, and I'm using SW decoding though.

yea the Z61t totally loooks like a macbook clone

retard

t420s user here, best laptop I ever owned, I hope it will be my workhorse for another 3 years atleast.

I saw someone at college using this, originally thought he painted the body silver. Looked pretty bad either way.

Hope that will be true. Wish it has an ips panel instead.

So they were off from other lenovo laptop such as the ideapad line? I really want to mod my broken t420s with a better panel. Something that is 100% sRGB at least...

Yup, really wish I had an IPS upgrade available, but the rest is ok, will get a new keyboard, ssd, battery and ultrabay battery soon, already have an ssd and i7 2620m, not much more i can upgrade, will prob get 16gb of ram, atm I have 8.
Nevertheless the laptop works flawlessly atm

>no recommended X220 and T420 models

no. fuck off.

seems redundant to suggest reading the buyers guide but then make a suggestion on the t420/x220

There's decent Yoga models. Well, one. The X1.

Some chicks did made a chip that converts lvds connection to edp for some specific ips panels, but seem like they won't sell the conversion kit anymore...the same group of people who responsible for the x320 and x330

Yeah, I looked into it, but I don't mind the 1600x900 panel im using right now, although fhd ips would surely make a huge difference

The X1 carbon screen is much better and pretty much drops in. there is a tutorial on thinkwiki.

>and I'm using SW decoding

I dont know what that means but right now I'm watching this

Codec ID : V_MPEGH/ISO/HEVC

on my T420 and the cpu is at 49C. you should add 5 or 10 degrees cause you got a smaller heatsink but 70-80 is way too high.

>Height : 528 pixels
That's even less than 720p.
Temps when watching something like that is about 50 C.
>SW
Software decoding.

>seems redundant
not at all.

Why is it impossible to get my hands on a w700ds?

I just want to be able to own the largest thinkpad around.

Hi!
I'm facing a problem with my t450, It can't boot on internal battery. When using external battery and the latter is fully discharged my computer shuts down (no switching). However BAT0 (internal) is well displayed by tlp. The status is always "unknown threshold effective" but the charge level is below threshold.
I tried to hard reset pushing the emergency button, reset bios to default, and opened the cover to disconnect/reconnect internal battery, without success. Have you ever heard of this issue ?

Also it can boot on AC, but if I unplug it, it shuts down instantly.

In addition, this situation only happens when external battery is removed.

what would consider to be the best laptop on the market right now if you just want to play games and stream content ?

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

topkek its real

>play games and stream content
pick one

>
so the thinktrap is commenting on my "classic" subtitle. dude, its because of the old classic keyboard.

why the fuck would you change the boot screen? are you 12?

OS? video player?

yes, im 12 and whats this?

because its a feature of the BIOS. its nothing as obscure as most retards think it is.

Just vinyl wrapped my X220 trackpad, feels good man

Windows7 mpc-hc

>its nothing as obscure as most retards think it is.
That's exactly the point, it's what a 12 year old would do to look like a l33t special snowflake.

its nothing "1337", corporate does it all the time,, it doesn't say anything related to loonix or shit. its the thinkpad logo and a drawing

>complaining about customization on a highly customizable hardware.

>and a drawing
>not special snowflake tryhard tier behavior

ah clearly using a well documented feature of a device makes you an special snowflake.

almost forgot where i was

>gray

>inferior non-apple machines

t41 for 10$, worth it?
Pentium M 1,6 GHz
1 gig ram and 40 gb harddrive and dockingstation

well yeah, its not an unusable machine. just make sure that it is in working condition.

if you have any use for it, go for it

Have a desktop but need a portable shitposting machine. What should i be looking out for besides what the used buyers guide says?

>well documented feature of a device
That should be used by companies for professional purposes, not for cringey "i'm such a neeerrd" practices.

"im such a neeeerd" have nothing to do with customising the boot screen, it involves nothing a mental impaired person cant do.

Its Stańczyk not Spanish boi

thats the filename i found it with on Sup Forums

1998 and dem bezels. Better than appletrash up until only the past year.

>"im such a neeeerd" have nothing to do with customising the boot screen

yes it does, it's right up there with those autistic laptop stickers.

two questions: what anime made you do this? and
how's the relationship with your mom?

My girlfriend needs a laptop for school. (CS) I suggested x220/x230 but she doesn't want to get a used one. I suggested the x260 but now she says it has to be pink and that it might be too heavy for her. What do?

I'm totally gonna buy a refurb T420. I crave the Thinkvantage. I'm gonna do it, guys.
But one question.

Will I be able to run Windows 7 (or Windows 10 if I can't get 10 off the hard drive reasonably)'s filesystem fairly fast, be able to do processing of documents, and browsing the web without any hitches if I just keep the system as stock as I can? In terms of software used, that is. No weird "debloatifying" shit, no strange chinese bitminers or whatever the fuck. Keeping it simple.

Will I be tearing out my hair in frustration at the slowness of an i5 8GB[RAM] T420? I think I'll have a decent time personally, but I just need confirmation from a bunch of random anonymous users on Sup Forums who one hundred percent of the time are telling the truth and know what they're talking about. DEFINITELY.

It's not even that big of a expenditure, at a measly CAD$~280-300. But... I don't want it to be for nothing.

are you 12, if those aren't pretty respectable specs to you?

it will run basic tasks just fine no matter the OS

>What do?
dump the whore

Oh, no, they're reasonable to me. I've just had broken hardware, or at least I think, for a lot of my life. So, as a reference point for 8GB of ram, it seems pretty slow to me because it was defective ram. And the only other processor(s) I've had: i3 from long ago, AMD A10 trash piece of shit that keeps overheating...

I'm looking to either trash or sell my old laptops and replace my current primary laptop with the T420.

I do have a Latitude E6410, as well. That runs Linux. Or, rather, ran Linux. I accidentally my inodes, and have yet to fix that shit, but I digress
I'm just so fucking fed up with never having a proper system to work with. I've always had faulty hardware, and it's always driven me insane.
I just want fresh. I want something that works as it is intended. My worst nightmare would probably be something faulty in the refurb job... but either way.

i5 is fine. I don't need an i7. i5 can perform good. Yes, with accurate certainty, an i5 shall do my tasks for me with barely a hitch or stop.

Thanks lad

also get a ssd

Oh, definitely. I'll see if I can pull up my history for the exact listing I was looking at. It may be that the CAD$400 one was the one with an SSD... but hey, TP's are very easy to swap parts and shit so it shouldn't matter.

And, question.
How much of a meme is the "magnesium rollcage"

>T420

what magnesium rollcage?

Oh right, what model has that again? My mistake, apologies.

idk, T61 maybe

Should I buy the Y700? Is it good for all-around use if I want to game as well? Should I go for a different model? I can't decide between Y700 and an inspirion 15 7000. Please help me.

It's clearly all about the T40, lighning proof is all I need
youtube.com/watch?v=JXsDfuVctFk

>anime
jesus, how biased are you?
its not even from an anime, i dont watch anime, the picture its from a mainstream game called titanfall, which i have taken a liking to recently

>how's the relationship with your mom?
she lives in another country.

>with those autistic laptop stickers.

for once i agree on this.

430s best pad

wheres the best place to buy a battery? t420 here

>the picture its from a mainstream game called titanfall, which i have taken a liking to recently
so you're not 12, you're 14. carry on then.

amazon. i think the T420 battery is not listed on lenovo's website anymore.

honestly i think we should stop recommending the XX20 series, and move into the xx30 series now that you can install the xx20 keyboard on them.

my mom says im a big boy already.

aight thanks senpai

>no gay porn links
cmon

I was able to watch 1080p mkv files off an X61T w/ Windows 7 without heat issues...

Just keep a saved search for W700ds on your ebay app for notifications.
I do for transnote and some other laptops.

lol
Sent an offer for $20

>revised classic keyboard
fix'd :P

If it works and isn't too beat up yeah its 'worth it'. but you have a PATA hdd and probably are going to be stuck with PAE distros
Plus they slow nowdays.

Just let her do what she wants with her money
There should be a few pink vaios

ThinkPad and business machines only.
Not consumer business look or gaming business look laptops.
I recommend Linus Tech Tips for people like you.

Can someone explain to me the vgabios/coreboot situation? From what I understand, you need to backup your unique vgabios before flashing coreboot, otherwise your thinkpad won't be able to boot OSes which require graphics at boot time (eg windows or ubuntu) is this true? If so how do I backup my vgabios?

The options I have for her are x260, macbook something and the xps 13.
I don't trust her with a macbook, I'm sure she will break it or it will get stolen. But it is the only one that is pink.
I'm sure the x260 is the best one for programming (has the best keyboard) and most reliable but how can I convince her to get it?

Why is this shit allowed?

dumb gooks, that's why

She's best getting the macbook
and you are going to sperg out and break up with her.

The Macbook is probably going to be a hell of a deal with her student discount (email) and extended apple care warranty.
The macbook will hold value more than the x260 will.

Also you saying the X260 is best for programming is subjective. Because literally anyone can code on any computer. Used IBM ThinkPads were recommended for coding in pre 2009 era times.

Though I do agree the macbook would most wanted to get stolen

>and move into the xx30 series
>xx30 series
>hotter and louder vs xx20
>cant use non-genuine batteries
>shit keyboard
>you need chips and hardware programmers and shit to flash an unlocked bios

the official thinkpad hierarchy of actually good recommended models should be

T60/61/X200/X201 and whatever older models
>powergap
X220,T420
>powergap (actually not quite a power gap so much as a battery gap)
T440s,T540p and newer models.

*convertibles and W series are excluded for now

there are literally zero(0) reasons to recommend the XX30 series, the same way XX10 aren't recommended.

...

Fow how long do you think t420's will be usable as every day drivers?
I am an owner of t420s so im legit wondering.

Which ones would you recommend? I have roughly 1500 to spend for a good laptop for programming work, but I'd also like to play games on it. Touch display is not needed, a good amount of ram would be nice for projects. Not new and graphically difficult games, but I'd not like to have an integrated gpu.

Why is the xx30 series hotter and louder than xx20 anyway? Shouldn't they be cooler, since Ivy Bridge is 22nm compared to Sandy Bridge which is 32nm?

It really depends on your personal daily driver needs.

It probably won't stop handling normal office stuff, normal websites and normal media playback anytime soon. Many years it should work.

Of course, it might break down - but that would likely be fixable. And maybe we'll get a new media format that won't work as nicely as desirable.

I still use an X60 as a daily driver and it works fine, and that is a 10 year old laptop. I do however need to compromise some: some really heavy 1080p files might not play, but 720p or even lower is ok anyway due to the screen. Sometimes I might encounter a bit of lag using some heavy website, but this isn't even common.

I typically don't like recommending computers I never tried. Newer computers can have the risk of having quality control issues.

We'd probably recommend a Lenovo P50, HP Z-Book or Dell's new Precision.
But the moment you said gaming, isn't even worth bothering because it's gonna end up as 'wow the mobile version of this GPU sucks!' or "I don't want a quadro or firepro gpu'

why in the mother of fuck you recommend the XX40 series?, dude..the ultranav is gone on these

the XX30 is just an step from the XX20, ivy bridge, which is smaller and cooler and the chiclets.

>ivy bridge, which is smaller and cooler

>>hotter and louder vs xx20

Who do I believe???

>I'd also like to play games on it
you should really get a xbox one for gaymen and leave the laptop for laptop stuff.

By gaming I mean that it will run games decent enough while plugged in on medium settings. By work I meant that the battery should run more than 4 hours. I don't care about gpus, as long as it isn't an integrated one. Also, weight is a non issue.

they aren't hes just full of shit

Both CTRL keys on my X200 have suddenly stopped working. It doesn't even work when booting (ctrl alt del) and Ctrl+Alt+Fn doesn't fix it either.

Is there a solution to this or should I just get a new keyboard?

I will work abroad for 2 months and can't haul my desktop with me all the time.

>mentions bios flashing required programmer.
>shit keyboard
>cant use non genuine batteries

but then mentions the T440S and T540p and newer. and these also suffer from the same issues mentioned before. what gives?

>games decently
>doesn't tell me what kind of game they want to play specifically and on what settings, FPS expected and vsync bs on/off

Bro no more replies, stick to gaming on a desktop.

>recomends xx40 thinkpads over xx30
>recommends newer models, like the silver thinkpads, 11e, & chromebook 13
>ivy bridge thinkpads hotter and louder than sandy
Shit nigga, might as well get a trip.

Remove and reinstall the keyboard to see if it works.

replace keyboard is best solution
remove the keycaps and maybe the rubber domes are popped.

I'd like to do it to my X230. Did you buy a kit or just cut some vinyl?

>hes just full of shit
kek ok

>like the silver thinkpads, 11e, & chromebook 13
you're just overshitposting at this point, I mentioned two of the better ones off the top of my head, not this silver chromegook garbage.

>and these also suffer from the same issues mentioned before. what gives?

if people ask for a $400 thinkpad, are you going to recommend them two T420's duct taped together?

Okay. Specific games would be dota 2, csgo, euiv. Should run at 60fps and medium settings.

shit man there are brand new laptops being sold that are slower than the base i5 in a t420. it's gonna be a loong time until sandy core m can't stream an HD titty or show a spreadsheet

>it's gonna be a loong time until sandy core m can't stream an HD titty
this is true, but 4K titties are unplayable

n = 1

Also, more important than anything, how is the battery life when not gaming?

You could of skipped the T440s and T540p (which does come with shit 720p display standard and intel gfx) but you didn't. You literally recommended the clickpad thinkpads, which if i remember correctly, was heavily disliked by Sup Forums, enthusiasts and consumers.

As far as the T430 is hotter than a T420
Never had an issue with my T430s (x

Any vinyl sticker is fine. Just cut and go then slice again while it is applied for better detail finish.
