Materialism

>friends start playing computer games online again
>Hey user, want to play?
>meh my wallet is all the way on the other side of the room
>not to mention my computer is pretty old
>try downloading the game anyway
>shit is shit even on lowest settings
>barely even playable
>want to build a gaming computer now
>read endless articles
>watch endless youtube videos
>scroll through endless lists on parts sites
>justify $2000 price tag to myself somehow
>about to pull the trigger and buy all the parts
>decide to watch some game trailers to get me hyped
>realize I hate games
>realize I will probably end up using this brand new epic computer for watching youtube videos and surfing shitty websites
>realize the only entertaining part of the whole thing was getting to build another system
>realize I am a soulless materialistic fag trying to buy happiness yet again
>realize I have made so many purchases like this in the past 5 years its rediculous
>garage is fucking full of super expensive dumbass shit I bought and don't even like a year later
>TFW I almost fell for the 'buying shit will make you happy' meme yet again
>get depressed that I am so susceptible to advertising that I actually thought spending $2000 on a comp I would never use for anything but porn and Sup Forums was a good idea
>probably won't even build it now

What is the point of life? I spend 50-60 hours a week at work so I can get money to buy shit but nothing I buy makes me happy. Is this all there is? What is the point?

Buying shit WILL make you happy, just not useless shit.

you dont need a mega cpu. also you only need at max a $300 card. also mechanical rgb keyboards and 369 dollar mice are a meme and if you have them kill yourself.

i was happy as a clam playing old ass games on a x220 with a $15 mouse.

this.

And you only really need like $700 of computer or buy older shit from ebay to run most games efficiently.

Fucking retard just get an old i5 4460 desktop from new egg a 430 wall power supply and a 1060 or 480 and you'll be fine

you obviously need a woman (that will obey you)

>Just bought a decent used laptop for 145 euro(Aspire E1-570G) hat can handle a small game on lowest settings once in awhile
>Immedeatly open Sup Forums
>See this thread

That you for making me feel good about being a cheap bastard.

Get a gf
Get married
Have kids

It's the only way.

*thank you

I am on 4 years old laptop right now.
I bought it for playing Skyrim and I had really tight budget back then.
No Skyrim successor in 6 years, fuck this shit.
I won't buy anything new till the successor comes.
Only thing I bought in 3 years was cheap gaymur mouse for $20 and SSD drive.
mfw I don't give a shit about desktops anymore

Maybe try getting a Switch for Zelda?

That's the way of people who have given up.

You are literally programmed to get maximum happiness from having sex and having children.

Nothing else you could ever do will give you the same level of happiness.

>Hate existing videogames

Make your own?

he will have to buy all that dumbass expensive crap before he will realize this

path of materialistic life is always like that. Sweet at the beginning and sour at the end.

and with this realizations comes also problem, where the fuck to find a good reliable woman who was not fucked by 50 niggers.

get into vintage tech. fuck new/gaymer tech.

If I wanted to be happy I'd sell my shit, buy a ticket to monk-land and become a monk.

By my logic if I haven't done that yet then happiness mustn't be what I'm looking for.

I think I want to leave a legacy but I haven't the motive or ability to stop wasting time.

or a dakimakura

how about instead of buying a gaming rig, you use your time and money to make your life easier by learning how to optimize your daily work using macros, scripts etc.

a.k.a you're fat and/or ugly

>I spend 50-60 hours a week at work so I can get money to buy shit but nothing I buy makes me happy. Is this all there is? What is the point?

There is more to life than money and material possessions.

there's no point in life user, we were put on this earth to suffer and die, everything will turn to ashes and be forgotten. it's all a giant illusional jerk off.

Pretty much why I got hobbies. I took up calligraphy, and baking.
I still have a powerful machine for VMs and some gaymen though

Do you have friends OP? Find a girlfriend, mate.

It's nice that at least you understood this.

>What is the point of life? I spend 50-60 hours a week at work so I can get money to buy shit but nothing I buy makes me happy.
Just do something interesting.

>find a girlfriend, mate.
i am not attracted to any girls but oneitis, that is why i dont have a gf.

Get yourself a bicycle

t. lifetime experience

Gee, i can get a perfectly respectable gaming PC for around £6-700

>anchor yourself in useless shit so you can deceive yourself you have a reason to live

You sure your job isn't a problem?
Also

>so you can deceive yourself you have a reason to live
Isn't that the point of life

34, 2 rugrats, same woman 7 years. Don't do it. I improved my quality of living immensely. We have a house and 2 new cars, take trips. Buy nice furniture. My quality of life sucks. I'm constrained by my job and my home life and there's little time for the rest.

if you want a decent computer so bad, go lurk your local craigslist find a used i5 / i7-anything PC and then just slap a gtx1060 and you're good to go.

not the former, and normal looking enough to get laid but still a ways to go

>tfw live a minimalist lifestyle and dont have this issue

heh sucks to be u kid

>marriage
>happiness
LMAO

>minimalist lifestyle
>poor
why would you write two words when you could write one if u so minimalist

youtube.com/watch?v=5AII--2mSxA
youtube.com/watch?v=oZtJP7M-9Og

>having children
why would i spend my time on someone other than me?

>>realize

That's a good start.
Now do something about it.

>consumerist
That's one word for you.

You obviously like making things so find something in that vein that's more fulfilling and longer term than building a PC.

>get hyped for the Ryzen launch
>yay! finally time to retire the Core2Duo!
>but wait, I can do anything I want to do my computer already. Processing videos just take a bit of time rendering
>maybe I could start PLAYING VIDYA again, that would help justify the huge price tag
>I have no idea if I'd like any games anymore
>friend suggests Rocket League because it's fun
>I search it on Youtube to see how it looks like
>all those CAPS LOCK TITLES and adhd thumbnails with disgusting looking manchildren screaming on them
>I can't attend activity like that. I'd rather go to gaybar

So too bad but I'm still not going to buy new electronics.

>$2000
Well maybe that's an overkill. Just go a bit cheaper m8.

I've got R9 380 and FX 6300 and not once have I thought of needing a better PC for games. But then again, I only play Overwatch, CS:GO and Rust with my mates. I did want more RAM because of Rust (have 8GB currently), but that's more because of other hobbies and me not wanting to shut programs down.

Other things though, such as development, using Krita and using my PC as guitar amp sure could use a better PC.

How often do you exercise, OP? Preferably outside and not at a gym.

>I spend 50-60 hours a week at work so I can get money to buy stuff but nothing I buy makes me happy.
You will take nothing with you to the grave, user. Life is not about accumulating material stuff, it is about accumulating experiences. Also: Where are your friends and family?

>doing squats outside the gym
>doing hyperextensions outside the gym

not OP, but similar situation. No family. Everyone is dead.
Friends I only get together with a couple of times a year at birthdays. Making new ones is very hard, due to everyone having families and hobbies to attend to and you having no time/will to learn them to be a part of something.

This is suffering

Can't take experiences to the grave either.

start travelling

I'm the same way but I ONLY do it with my computer. The more computational power you wield the closer you are to god who is the perfect machine, able to compute all possible outcomes for all possible time lines on any given scale. Also, yeah, assembling, overclocking, rebuilding to optimize cooling, waiting for and getting the parts is generally more fun than games.
I'm happy with my hardware right now but I'll still buy small things every week or two like a power supply extension cable, rgb's, fans, whatever. Keep something to look forward to.
$2000 is too much, scale it back. Get the absolute best price to performance for the game you want to play. I play blizzard shit so that's nvidia, if I played AAA it would be AMD. A ryzen, rx 480, good ram, reasonable storage, budget case will last you a long ass time. Upgrade it if you want but don't sink 2k off the bat, most parts maintain their value for at least a year.
Pic related is a $320 gpu in a $500 system.

I am sorry mate. Hear a lot of the same stories, usually in 1st world countries where "meeting the basics of life" is relatively easy. Is there no hobby that you can pick that you can fit into your schedule?

But experiences can be very fulfilling.

that's a very good proposal, I've thought about it countless times. See the world. Get inspiration. Maybe it'll even open my eyes and make me realise how well i actually have it.

you need to become spiritually aware

>nothing I buy makes me happy
You need some enthusiasm bruv.

>Is this all there is? What is the point?
The point is achievements. You can get those in games, but you can also get them IRL, you'd be surprised.

>can get money to buy shit
The point is getting steadily more and more money. But after a certain point you get the last achievement and it doesn't matter how much more you rack in. You need other chieves.

It doesn't matter what it is. It's for me. Find something where you can see steady improvement. And when it feels like nothing has a point, get some ecstasy to fill that empty void. Then find more achievements.

i spend $1000 on a Sup Forums machine

I live in and recommend SEA. All the poverty of the third world, but also all the niceties of the 1st world (if you can afford them) and very little crime.

I mean, this is super silly, but I inherited a small garden not far away from the city I live in. I've been going there a few times a month to repair stuff and clean. kinda brings peace of mind.

That said, OP's point still stands. No technology is relevant at this point.

thanks for the heads up.

Gardening is an excellent hobby, particularly if you are anti-social.

Well, stop thinking. Start doing.

Every day you waste is a day you will never get back. Don't waste another day.

This. Plus food of course.

I recommend reading the Reward system Wikipedia article, it's fascinating.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reward_system

>this is super silly
Doesn't sound silly at all actually, that sounds like something that people usually find satisfaction in. It's the little things. Might sound gay, but it really is.

Someone mentioned friends and family and that's a big part of it. I've been lonely, felt like I don't really want "friends" where as a matter of fact, I've built a wall around myself and haven't even experienced true friendship. Super gay, but it's true. There are faggots around that are just like you and having a close relationship with them is fulfilling. Doesn't matter how introverted or asocial you feel like, you need people in your life. Socializing is a basic human need. So that's another thing to look out for, OP.

Choose life.

Good thread. I wish we have more threads like this.

/csg/ fulfills my materialism at $15/month. Gaming is shit unless it's with friends.

This. Also write down characteristics of the person you wish to be and work to become that "ideal" version of yourself

Life has no meaning.
Some people find happiness in some kind of goals...
If you're lucky enough, you can think for yourself an unreachable goal. This way you can live happily.
Short term goals are just that.
When you reach it, it's gone and you're miserable again.

In the end:
- life is meaningless
- death even more

Only good reason to live is just look how world is changing.

babby's first nihilism

Happiness (as in fulfillment, not hedonistic joy) is not meaningless.

You can find happiness in life.

Life is not meaningless.

Nigger I cleaned this today, its older than most of my friends kids, my screen is older than that and my mouse is some $20 Logitech special.

What matters is what inside my rig, and that's top class that case is 6 years old, but you don't have to go all out, AMDs budget CPUs are coming, video cards used.can be had for cheap, 8GB of RAM is.cheap SD balls.

Harden up, get a job. Buy cheap PC.

anything beyond $800 is getting high diminishing returns on the $ to processing power, also buying a "GAMAN RIG" without even having a plan what to play is pretty stupid in general, just buy a macbook and be gay somewhere else

I feel like this every once in a while too, usually after a video game binge.

I used to play a lot of Runescape and, one night, a couple years back, I was wondering what to do in-game. But this night was different. I thought of the different options. But I just kept asking myself "And then what?" No matter what I thought about, it wasn't enough. Finally, I thought about cooking. And I stopped and thought, "Wait, I can do that in real life."

So I just turned off the computer and went to sleep. The next day, I looked for that image of "Outside, the most realistic game ever created". I started thinking about life the way I had thought about RS. No matter what I thought of doing, it was incredibly interesting, because it was real. I could gain real tangible skills, gain real wealth, effect real change, fuck real women, dress the way I liked and really like the way I dressed. Granted, real life is significantly more difficult than RS but the principles are the same: use economics, read guides, follow good advice, work with others. Idk, maybe that'll help you.

Your words are useless to me because you're working within your own system of values.

You could derive 'meaning' from literally anything.
Or reject that notion completely and still be happy.

Happiness is not a function of meaning.

Hello somebody in this thread be my sugar daddy????

I'm VERY cute. ;3

>I'm VERY cute. ;3

Implying.

Did you go to Mt. Vesuvius and get your fire cape yet? Honestly isn't worth it if you haven't, I just get weird looks in public whenever I wear it.
Just read Epictetus my dudes

fuck off wanker

I think consumerism gets a bad rap.

OP just seems depressed.

Meanwhile a high end PC with a big high res screen and a good sound system or decent headphones allow yourself to be immersed into games better. You are improving your experience. The real problem is that most new games suck.

Watching a movie is more enjoyable on a 65" 4K HDR TV than on one that's just 32".

Music sounds better with some decent headphones.

Being able to buy expensive, well designed, things is a please because they make life more convenient. Like you could be a NEET who hates consumerism and buy an old Thinkpad that doesn't work properly, is thick, loud and has a terrible screen or you could just buy a Macbook that just works.

It's just that buying those things should not be an end in itself. They should just enable you to do something or do it better.

>americunts using word materialism in this faggy new age way

>adult
>play video games
pick uno

Sometimes i feel the same way, and i think everyone gets caught in that trap

Do volunteer work in something you would like
Travel
Learn to cook and invite your friends
Read something that would interest you, not memes from /lit/ if you are not used to reading
Get into some sport or just running

>The real problem is that most new games suck.
Correction: Most games suck, period. You just don't remember the old shovelware as good as new shovelware.

I'm right there with you.
There are words that have already a pretty well defined meaning assigned to them.
These fast fluctuations just muddle language as a tool to pass information.
Can't do anything about it though. If anything, this development is going to accelerate even more over time.
Welcome to the angry old man club. Here's your card.

>this thread

I was just about to buy a 1440p 144hz monitor + HD650 headphones with an amp+dac

>Having friends
wew, I dodged a bullet there

>Meanwhile a high end PC with a big high res screen and a good sound system or decent headphones allow yourself to be immersed into games better. You are improving your experience.

It will have next to no effect on what you take away from the game, e.g. the lasting memory.
You shouldn't need a 30" 4k screen to be immersed in an atmospheric game in the first place.

>Watching a movie is more enjoyable on a 65" 4K HDR TV than on one that's just 32".

It's not. You'll get used to it quickly and won't even notice the difference.
Before people got conditioned to huge-ass screens by TV manufacturers, they were able to enjoy a good movie even on a tiny screen.

>Music sounds better with some decent headphones.

You can get decent headphones for $50, no need to shill out $200 for a meme amp and $300 for phones, you very likely won't be able to tell any difference.

Convenience and comfort is the bane of Western civilization.
Don't buy into it.
Spend your money on unique experiences like exploration, traveling or making.

At church.

Yeah, right

>father i have sinned
>jesus forgives all. don't do it again, but if you do jesus will forgive you again.
>hold on father i'm getting a text from chad. thank you jesus!

Women aren't like that.

Bronon, read Schopenhauer.
My mindset is built upon him and Nietzsche, I will never feel happiness again...

don't be scared and live.

You're right, they actually hate themselves but keep doing it anyways.

As a practicing catholic (it's an act, I do it for some benefits I would otherwise lose) let me tell you something about your typical church goer under 35. They're the worst bunch you can imagine.
Churches draw people who think they have something to atone for.
The woman are very often just massive sluts or worse.

Well, the "problem" is maturity. Not only that, but there are hardly any newer games worth playing. Not to mention the fact that you have to make an investment of 1000 $ or € to have some fun with your friends.

We both know that if we were able to be in a position that having friends would be fun, we'd have happier lives.

>What is the point of life?
Seems like you hit dead end kiddo.
Try lurking here some time: >being epicurean trash
>not being spiritually superior

>reads Nietzsche
>comes out sad

Seems you went in with a rebuild expectation and just kept what reinforcing your view.
Nietzsche wasn't even Nihilist, he saw Nihilism as a useful transitional phase to be overcome.

if one was a good and admirable man one would have gotten a virgin girlfriend in school and stayed with her for all the years

Pre built expectations, yeah, sounds about right.
