Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

What Linux has the best compatibility and battery life for my E6430?

is there a keyboard i can buy for the x220 that doesnt shine?

went to a local store and saw that they sold refurbished thinkpads

i saw a t410 for like either 299 or 399$ (in CAD currency)

is it worth it?

9 out of 10 Dell fags that I know use Ubuntu
not really

what screen should I upgrade to for my t420

thats a bit high, only if it comes with a ssd, good battery, and at least a 6-12 month warranty. was gonna mention an i7 too, but I havent seen many i7 t410's in the wild.

thinkwiki.org/wiki/Replacing_T430_screen_with_a_better_one

yeah i believe that store has some pretty good warranties, but it's been a while since i bought anything from there

>9 out of 10 Dell fags that I know use Ubuntu
I read there were compatibility issues with it. Guess I'll stick with Windows.

>X60 9 cell won't charge past 84% (according to linux)

is it kill? it already only lasted about two hours

I guess I need a new battery anyway

Is the new x1 carbon good? It looks like it's dual core only.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

how are your first few days on Sup Forums ?

Is there any way to factory reset one of the school chromebooks at my highschool?

...

It's not so much that they are depreciating slower, but they are remaining a lot more useful for a lot longer. That's not just a result of low voltage processors in laptops, but it is also a product of the mass adoption of phones.

That being said, it cannot last forever. Eventually the Sandy Bridge CPUs will be completely worthless and out of date, and when that day comes we are facing a non-modular, hard-to-repair low-voltage future. But thankfully, because of the emphasis on power efficiency and muh thin, we can delay that age just a little longer than we would have been able to otherwise.

What do you think what will be the next
t420/x220 when that day comes?

there won't be one

Care to elaborate a bit?

Like every other non workstation laptop

As in, what will be the universally shilled model on Sup Forums? Tough to say. Some people here are warming up to the new Thinkpads, I personally could take them or leave them. I am sure the Tx70 will be loved since it has been re-engineered to be more sturdy and has gone back to the classic black colour scheme.

As for what model will pick up the baton for being easily repairable? Maybe the xx30 for a while, but once those have passed, it's just as says. There will not be one.

If you want a vision of the future, imagine a 7 watt dorito stamping on a human face- forever.

yes, look it up here:

chromium.org/chromium-os/developer-information-for-chrome-os-devices

What about the new ThinkPads? Is X270 as shitty as it seems?

Also you can probably coreboot it to install any OS:

Best tip for the clit mouse? The bumpy one gets uncomfortable after a while.

You got me hard with the Thinkpad meme Sup Forums. Well played. I guess all that's left is to find a suitably tall cliff to chuck this piece of shit off of.

Is W10 dicks on the X220?

Anyone know how to find something like this for under 200? I was thinking of getting a chromebook and running linux as a daily driver.

yes

Pics or it didn't happen

Why?

What thinkpad did you get?

runs perfect

actually Windows10 is alright if you disable turbo boost and find a way to set persistent battery thresholds.

Aren't they persistent already?

As in, you install the thing, set them and they're permanently set regardless of what system you install?

In any case I disabled turbo boost already

Did I fuck up? Just bought new for 359

Well the price is okay, but most of the Sup Forums would fo for an used t/p/w/x series thinkpad instead

that thing will fall apart in 4 months

>you install the thing
on windows10? it's quite a hasssle tho, install what?

Is a used t530 with 8 gb ram, hd4000 graphics, i5 processor with 1600×900 screen for ~$280 a good deal?

ssd?

Sadly, nope

returned a thinkpad and the guy claimed for a month he never got it, finally won my fucking case. fucking computer business in massachusetts, what the fuck

>Gay porn

What ?

Any news on the thinkpad retro project?

Why do they seem shitty? The 70 series is definitely the best series Lenovo has ever made.

Ideapad are not better than baseline Dell. Complete shit.

Nope. I hope it's good because X62 turned up to be an unreliable POS.

But why

>good deal?
almost

Bunch of T430s with thunderbolt_2 port.
Those are rare; get them while you can Sup Forums

they arent rare, any t430s with an i7 will have thunderbolt

nope. I use to think so too but no.
The ones with TB2 have a lightning bolt on top of displayport instead of the displayport logo. quick search on ebay will let you see some i7 w/o TB2

oops i forgot to mention for a t430s to come with thunderbolt it must have.
>i7 3520
>non discrete graphics

le epic reddit NSFW way XDDD

>buy pic related despite Sup Forums telling me it was snake oil
>idle temps dropped from mid 50s to high 30s >can barely hear it

Why is Sup Forums always wrong?

>a fan on top of a fan instead of cleaning the boogers and dried cum out of the grill with a toothbrush and change the thermal paste

Location: US but may be moving to Japan for work
Price range: $200-250
Size range: 12-14 in
Performance requirements: Word processing, video, etc. Not intensive (I'm a teacher)
Other requirements: Just an SSD really. I can't stand using an HDD for a boot drive anymore.

He doubled his dust capacity. We do that with hard drives all the time.

There are more used stuff in Japan (way more) but you will get their keyboards. Better buy it here.

Going to teach engrish ?

In better condition, too. Check the flea markets.

>Other requirements: Just an SSD really.
get a good X220 then buy a msata ssd and use the old hard drive as a pornography storage unit.

Best mini pci card wlan for a x220 bios moded?

Is $200 for a refurbed X220 reasonable? Is ktgee still a decent price guide? It says $220 for "buy it now" is expected, so this seems good enough for the impatient.

The CPU clock's 2.5 GHz but it doesn't specify a model. 4 GB RAM, 320 GB 7200 RPM HDD, battery's in great condition

>refurbed
refurbed a legitimate business or some guy on the street

I meant the lelnovo battery manager on Windows 7 or some shit.

7260HMW AC

The latter, I believe. It's a listing on Amazon by some pajeet

Yes, going to teach Engrish for 3 or more years

Hmm, I'm torn then. But the keyboard aspect is pretty important. I have 0 experience using a Japanese keyboard.

The other option is deconstructing my desktop and shipping it over to a friend. Could buy a new case over there and rebuild it.

you have to set it while using windows7 then if you reboot into w10 it works, but if somehow at some point they wont work anymore, you need to get back in a windows7 install and set it again. that is if you actually really care about thresholds. you could just spend $20 on some chink battery 1-2 years later and replace it forever.

>Yes, going to teach Engrish for 3 or more years
how much are you getting paid for this? I mean for japan standards. will you be a smelly bum living in a capsule hotel or some kind of upper class pussy slayer?

What about the Intel Centrino Ultimate-n 6300?

I'll be honest, I never actually bothered changing the thresholds at all. This thing came with 8.1 and it was pretty alright with the battery for my usage so I didn't really worry about it that much. I use the thing maybe 3 days a week, no more than 3 hours a day, and it works fine for that.

I'm making 4.8mil Yen with subsidized housing and transportation. Current exchange rates puts that at 42k per year. Not the greatest, but being subsidized is a plus and I get to teach in Japan to boot.

you mean a T420 card? not much of an improvement tho

x220.

T420 usually comes with a Ultimate-n 6300

X220 comes with Advanced N 6200 or something

I suppose you could find replacement keyboards for many models you would find in a flea market. Check them out if you're not in a rush; make sure to check dates and spots in advance for flea markets in your area.

But in the end, since you'll be living in Japan might be a good idea to get used to their keyboards. In the end its mostly just like English keyboards, just set the system's input method to English and it won't be much different from what you're used to.

Will I need hardware for this?

It's thunderbolt 1, not 2. Still 10gbps which is pretty sweet.

oh... I'm disapoint. I guess it does not really matter since Thunderbolt to Pci-e adaptators are way more expensive than express-card ones.

>gaymes

Is there a good vendor for replacement screens? I tried an Amazon vendor and I had one shipped to me between two pieces of cardboard.

I always wondered: does the BT from that card work ? should I just remove the BT FRU card ?

Booted my T61p a couple of days ago, upgraded the kernel and lots of smaller things. Now I seem to be preferring its diesel glow, and the slightly smaller pixels of the display, to the better screen of the W520. It doesn't really feel much slower either!

What is this sorcery?

Use ebay m8, you can find a better deal there.
410 should't cost you more than $180-200 CAD

Can a fellow Sup Forumsentooman with a Thinkpad X201 share his kernel .config ?
I struggle to make my own. Especially wireless and graphics.

Got an SXGA+ G41, that means I'm gonna put in a IPS panel from the spare T42p I have. Its gonna be fun.

A31p is awaiting a 2.5GHz Pentium 4-M.

>tfw I don't have that problem

When I gamed, I raised the T60p from the surface and had a case fan attached spliced into a USB.

Ugly, but better than a laptop cooler.

Laptopscreen.com
be sure to read if they have replacements or not.
They also have an eBay store and I have bought some exact panels from them for fairly cheap, they are in canada and in US.
I bought a 'compatible' FHD IPS display for a T440p and it was a really good deal for the price (basically bought two chimei's for the price of a used superior panel).
less in adobe RGB and color 'pop' but it didn't matter because it was IPS.

When i got the shipment it was pretty much a box, cardboard pieces, padded envelope and then red 4mm styrofoam layers and the screens were in antistatic bags.
Weren't damaged, it was a bit questionable, but it was USPS so it was insured.

Other than the small space bar and weird right keys, its not that that bad.
But Im used to transitioning from my UK Chromebook Pixel to T430s to 2009 Macbook 13" each day.

Shit I forgot to post a photo.

On left, 3x T430s, top, T431s w/ clickpad swap and 1080p IPS swap... The damn trackpad drivers do not work on Windows 7 or 8.1 though, linux its fine. (x

On right frop top to bottom
G40 - Nothing special
G41 - pending upgrade, cleanup and HDD/OS
A31 - Nothing crazy it was meant as a backup a few years back
A31p - Probably my baby, I gotta remove the vinyl wrap for when I post the upgrades. I got the numberpad, ultraport camera, bluetooth adapter, and ultrabase. Just need to get a CMOS battery, I am also waiting for a Samsung HM160HC from china, the fastest IDE you can get.

I haven't been uploading videos, yeah.. sorry about that. Lazy sack of shit when it comes to video editing.

Hey mate, I bought my first thinkpad 4 months ago, it's a t420s with 8gigs of ram, i7 2620m, ssd, 1600x900 TN disp, Nvidia optimus.
I was wondering for how long will I be able to use this puppy before it becomes obsolete?
I'm runing linux/gnu on it, and enjoying it more than ever.

>Recommended models:
>T420 - 14", normal size
>X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
How much longer will these last (not performance-wise, but before the motherboard fails)?

>go to doctor for strep throat
>Nurse isnt that qt, has W530, stare at it instead.
>Is worried that I'm staring at the 530 a little too hard

>Doctor brings in x230
>types away on it while holding nasty throat swab from wife's throat
>banter about how humans are awesome disease-breeding devices

Just letting you faggots know I was thinking about you the other day.

>W530
That's (almost) my fetish. As a lowly T60 owner the W520 is my next one unless I run across a tablet model for cheap.

>I was wondering for how long will I be able to use this puppy before it becomes obsolete?
What are you using it for? I don't even think the T40 would count as obsolete for most things.

Are there any low budget, worth while computers that don't look like they were built in the 90s? I went through the buyers guide but didn't find what I was looking for. I have a small list of features I'm looking for in a laptop around $500, but I'm not sure any thinkpad covers them all. Where should I go for this search?

It is my daily driver, so basicly multimedia, programming, surfing the web, etc etc.
I don't plan on cracking salted sha encryption with it, but I hope I will be able to use it as a daily driver for atleast 4+ years

You'll probably get about five to ten years out of it at the least. If higher end T60's from 2006 can still go toe-to-toe with modern notebooks you should be gold as long as you take good care of it.
The best thing the Thinkpad does is look like it came straight from the 90's. Maybe Alienware is more your speed? You can try searching on the Thinkwiki to see if anything matches your list.

You don't like 90s tech
I guess you also don't like Linux

I just don't like the look man. So is there anyway to get advice on attractive laptops?

What exactly is on your list of features you need anyways and what kind of aesthetic do you want? If you want a Sup Forumseddit gayman machine with 9001 LED lights Alienware is your choice.

Take a look at the ThinkPad X1 carbon then for your MacBook clone. Or you could be more helpful and post pictures of laptops you feel look good.
