OP here, I actually backed the project with $450 to get the Android version asap
Logan Smith
no linux though
Ethan Cooper
I'll stick to my Thinkpads, no thank you.
Jaxon Sullivan
ARM CPU running Windows? what does it mean? Will you be able to run x86-64 programs for win?
Lucas Nguyen
>4G Finally
Gabriel Cooper
Emulation.
But why? Just stick to running x86 code on x86 processors you fuck, the performance penalty won't be worth it. Use an E3950 or something.
Mason Howard
Face it, it's an Android device. The Windows version will suck major balls but with Android it's gonna be unreal. Windows isn't good on screens that small anyways.
Carson Turner
but can it run GNU/Linux? i dont want a windows only device.
Better for what? more pixels = more power consumption >more iGPU processing = even more power consumption more scaling and other useless processing = extra power consumption
the more power it consumes the less mobile and usable it is.
Charles Thompson
It's an ARM CPU. Power comsumption is low and the battery is powerful enough to make for 12 hours of use. A higher pixel density leads to clear text and scaling isn't that bad, especially on Android. Who is gonna use the Windows version anyways?
Thomas Kelly
can you tell 1080p and 1440p apart at 8"? Seems like a waste on most accounts. 1080p seems to be pushing it too.
Connor Hernandez
Really like the modular design and features of the pyra dragonbox, too bad it is underpowered as fuck.
But I want 20 hours instead of 12 hours of use. >leads to clear text and scaling are you autistic? It's a 8" screen. Without a magnifier you will NEVER spot a difference between 1080p and 1440p. Why not make it 2160p?
Ayden Long
The biggest problem with these is that they come with a 16:9 screen. On most devices I wouldn't care but this thing is so small that more lines of text would really matter.
Nathan Flores
(You)
Logan Collins
You know what's the difference between Coolest cooler and this? At least CC had a working prototype.
Logan Wood
>Without a magnifier you will NEVER spot a difference between 1080p and 1440p
>says user after jerking off to anime on his 1440p smartphone.
Ryan Campbell
>1440p >p
Wyatt Bell
I got a 720p smartphone, you dumb slut. And unlike you I don't have the need of jerking off to porn. This is where my boyfriend comes in.
Jacob Allen
>ARM dropped
Logan White
This. Higher resolutions than 1080p should be the standard by now. Jesus Chist, it's 2000+17. There's no justification for anything lower than 4k on the desktop or 1440p on a mobile device. Though I have to admit I'd rather have the standard at 2560x1600.
Anthony Nguyen
>Jesus Chist, it's 2000+17 And we still got the same technology to store power, aka liion/lipo batteries. Until this changes we have to be careful with throwing all these useless gimmicks into every device, unless you're satisfied with 10 hours battery life, which is absolutely pathetic.
Camden Bell
That's not how it works. If we stick with lower resolutions but good battery life with current technology there would be no reason to further develop battery technology.
Josiah Baker
Ansonsten resolution greater than 1600x1200 was a mistake
Adrian Garcia
>t. someone who owns a 1600x1200 screen and is too poor to get anything higher resolution that would be objectively and subjectively superior
Gabriel Lewis
>there would be no reason to further develop battery technology. I sure wish I could use my smartphone for days on a single charge (like my old phones) instead of differences in pixel density you can't even see
Jeremiah Morgan
That's why you broke your cellphone screen.
Brayden Morris
but I don't want bigger screens. I want better battery life. Deal with it. This is what normal people choose.
Sebastian Jackson
Windows 10 is free on devices under 10", why is it 150$ more ?
Dominic Richardson
It's ARM
It's not a UMPC
Jaxson Ramirez
Why do people who discuss a GPD product get called shills, though they are even talking about it's flaws and saying it's a very niche product and not for everyone.
When this thread here is obviously an actual shill focusing on selling a product?
David Jenkins
>Windows on an ARM CPU emulating x86 >Android I'll pass
Carson Sullivan
Since when is x86 a requirement for a computer to qualify as a PC? Is this the early 90s when the term "IBM compatible PC" was a thing?
Jack Brooks
Ok, then my smartphone and tablet are UMPCs.
Julian Parker
There is no official definition for a UMPC. But the term was coined by Microsoft and Intel collaboration for their x86 based small PCs.
So from then on, only x86 based small computers have been called UMPC. Things like the ARM based OpenPandora are just considered handhelds or PDAs.
The idea of UMPC is way older and only x86 machines where called ultra portables from where UMPC continued on. The rest where always called something on the lines of PDAs.
Camden Peterson
I didn't say UMPC, I said PC. A literal PC as in personal computer.
To add to that: Microsoft actually did have a specification for manufacturers who wanted their products to be UMPCs, it required it to be smaller than 7 inches, have a x86 based processor and be able to run Windows if needed.
No? What a dumb question is that. PC as in Personal Computer counts for any computer. PC as in PC Compatible is only for x86.
Lincoln Perez
Emulation. I don't know if the whole OS is x86 or if it's an ARM OS with x86 emulation (like Windows NT on Alpha) but either way I expect it to be shit
Jonathan Cruz
Sucker!
You won't get shit.
Kevin Long
>PC as in Personal Computer counts for any computer. Bullshit. It doesn't count for super computers and it certainly doesn't count for embedded systems which make up the majority of the computer market.
Aaron Brown
>The UMPC that has been promised for decades but not delivered until now But it's not even x86? I want a UMPC, then I want a x86 device obviously.... Even the Pocket would be a better idea and that is not even appealing and just a ruined change.
Sebastian Turner
So is it fully compatible with X86 programs?
Will it run dorf fort?
Lincoln Moore
Are you slightly retarded? He was obviously talking about computers like desktops and laptops. If it's a super computer or embedded system, then it already has it's own category it belong to.
Aiden Cox
The term "any computer" does certainly not refer to desktops and laptops exclusively. "any computer" literally means anything that has a CPU.
Xavier Turner
Because you are being an autistic fuck who just has to shitpost, if you would have kept reading the discussion you would obviously understand that the talk wasn't just about any computer.
Ayden Hughes
any compact computer for individual use* Happy?
Leo Morris
that's not a UMPC
>BTFO GPD. at least GPD shit is actual UMPC
William King
But can you install gentoo in it?
Justin Morales
Why?
Liam Thompson
>t. someone who believes percise language isn't the foundation of civilization idiot
Julian Morris
Actually no.
Levi Jones
ah yes
indie no no
Andrew Carter
Kek
Dominic Wilson
>PC as in PC Compatible is only for x86. Not all x86 machines are PC compatibles, there's a list of retarded obsolete specs to have
Austin Howard
But all PC Compatibles are x86.
Why did you even bring this up?
Chase Kelly
The illiterate have always shaped civilization, sadly. Even now.
Thomas Cook
trivia
Cooper Peterson
>not all fish are herring >but all herring are fish we don't even have PC compatible hardware on sale anymore, most new EFI solutions don't even support legacy mode anymore
Evan Perry
>Snapdragon Dropped.
Oliver Gonzalez
>I am legitimately mentally handicapped
Leo Flores
What has year 2000 to do with it? I was running a higher resolution than full HD in 2000.
Zachary Allen
Soon the time of the SJWs will begin
Owen Collins
It doesn't even look like you can close it without fucking the screen on that render.
Alexander Cook
It's just bait to cash in anyways.
Such thing would not even pass in Kickstarter
Samuel Reyes
Are there any news on when it's coming out? It's been a freaking decade or so since the Pandora.
Nathan Green
Hasn't the Pyra been out for quite some time?
Austin Perez
>backing a project HAHAHAHAHAH
Connor Carter
>If we fall short of our $300K target a full refund will be issued and we will learn from the experience and try again dropped
Sebastian Lee
In short, no.
Jonathan Collins
No.
Pyra is "in development". It's a ridiculous project, it's hardware has outdated several times turning its development. They want 600 eur for the base model.
The developers working on the Pyra are very much amateurs, they are always nagging on other companies who bring out similar products with even better specs for cheaper while getting nowhere with their own.
James Wood
The worst part is that they will most likely get the goal and just fuck off with the money.
Caleb Rogers
They are ok with that because they want this to be the last device they make. I don't actually mind if they take a long time to perfect the shell, after all, it's the last one ever, and from now they will only release SoC upgrades. Besides it's running a custom OS with software written specifically for it isn't it? It's not that bad.
And yes, this is like a 1-man project isn't it? I'm fairly sure most of the rest of the people involved are just contractors and volunteers.
Hudson Russell
So they're developing a tablet with a keyboard, and they want $450 for it
welp
Brayden Fisher
Doesn't change the fact that it's a failure.
Liam Miller
Kek.
EvilDragon is now selling GPD Wins with a huge profit to fund himself. Even though he was sure the product will fail when it was announced.
Luis Butler
>dat pic Thank God we at least still have AMD
Charles Barnes
Well that guy just reeks of autism, but I don't judge the product by who makes it.
Nicholas Brown
>I don't judge the product by who makes it If it was just a person in a team I wouldn't either, but a single person doing the whole project, I'm not sure that he will always make the right decision.
Jose Martinez
I feel sorry for the people working for this company, already knowing this device will fail.
Justin King
>Snapdragon No I don't want to be fucked by no drivers and needing to stay in some old ass version full of security holes
Jace Torres
He definitely could end up fucking something up. But AFAIK he's only the project manager, all the real work is done by contractors, so what he could fucked up is shipping, or the selling process and delivery (which, if I recall, was a massive fuck up for the Pandora, and some people didn't received theirs for like a year or 2).
One can only hope I guess, hope that he learned from his mistakes and doesn't go full autismo or something, it's not like I pre-ordered one anyways, but the community is very nice and dedicated, I believe they have a lot of crossover with the GPD Win community, since it's just people who want small UMPCs, so for their sake I hope everything goes right.
And anyhow, I guess it's a good sign that he's willing to admit that he was wrong about the GPD meme, and not take it as a threat to his project, rather than throwing a tantrum or something like that.
Lincoln White
No trackpoint buttons, no buy.
Camden Cook
Pandora community really was nice, but Pyra just seems a dead end. Obviously it would be good to have more of that kind of devices, even though the Pandora/Pyra aren't considered UMPCs and more just Linux handhelds, even by their own fans.
Ryder Johnson
Will this be better than a laptop?
>The answer is no.
Jack Harris
I just went into their site to see what's up and they've been posting updates rather frequently, apparently they "think" they will start shipping this year, but there does seem to be a lot of people, at least on the forums.
I'm not sure how realistic this is, but whatshisface said in an interview that it could be possible, later down the line, to upgrade the Pyra with an x86 compatible CPU. Tho he said it as if someone else was going to make it, he hopes that third parties will be making CPU upgrades for the system, which to me seems rather unlikely.
