I have a legit copy of Windows Server 2016, should I do away with Windows 10?

I have a legit copy of Windows Server 2016, should I do away with Windows 10?

Being able to turn off random updates would be great. What else can server 2016 do that my pleb windows can't?

it can run active directory just as a one example

I vaguely remember that.

Go with Server 2008 (not R2), it's fast as shit and expires 2020

Install Ubuntu Budgie

But what about compatibility tho?

Windows Server 2016 is based off Windows 10 source code.

Ubuntu is nice, but I still need a Windows PC.

still malware, nigger

Ubuntu is nice, but he still needs a real OS.

You know you can just disable and enable the Windows Update service to stop or start automatic updates, right?

I dunno for sure, I can't check right now, but I'm pretty sure you can only disable it if you buy pro. I mean, that's what I was told... You may not even be able to access services or anything.

Being useless as a desktop os.

I didn't have much luck running games on windows server 2008, even after changing background process priority. Compatibility is prob better these days though.

A Windows PC is a WC

Should I buy a WC or a Mac?

This.

Why do people want to install server OSes on their home machines? It is full of hangups that make it much less convenient for the average user (even power user). Many features are disabled by default, GPU support is less abundant, not all applications targeted at Win 10 will work on Server 2016, etc.

If you just want to disable automatic updates, edit group policy. That, or run Windows 7. There are plenty of workarounds out there for Windows 10.

And yes, I've done the "server OS at home" meme in the past. It is completely pointless.

I get that it being a server OS makes it harder to set up and stuff, but it should give you more control over everything in the end, should it not? Then it'll run exactly what you want it to and nothing more. Even if you initially have to tell it to enable things like direct x even.

You mentioned poor graphics support though. That doesn't sound good. Good point if true. Do you think it would run well on a throwaway laptop?

When I imagine Windows Server, I think of it as being something very similar to Win2k. Is that true? Win2k was excellent.

Maybe because of DreamSpark people, who are also most probably CS students, can get a legal copy of Win Server and think that for being used in server it is better so they proceed installing it. Which was true about a decade ago as Server 2003 used a different codebase than XP and it was far better than it.

If someone wants the best they can get that would most probably be Win Enterprise which could be said is akin to Ultimate editions of previous versions.

Regarding the W10 apps that don't run, are you sure you can't just install some dependencies that are automatic on Windows 10?

No server 16 is basically win 10 with more functionality. Most of which you would never use on a desktop.

I might want to run a no-no porn server in my garage.

It has more unnecessary services so it'll be even slower for gaming if you're a manchild

write a batch script for it and slap it in the Startup folder inside "C:\Users\$USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"

@ECHO OFF

Seems like it might be fun setting up crazy networks with all of the computers in your house.

Open Group Policy Editor and adjust the update settings

Nobody uses Ubuntu for anything except light tinkering and/or protesting microsoft.
