I've been looking to set up a fileserver for awhile, maybe double its purpose to play media to my TV, but I'm really not interested in dumping $300 to get the base system set up.
I feel like I should be able to get this done for maybe $120 or $150?

hard drives are expensive, $300 is probably a reasonable expectation. sorry!

I meant excluding the hard drives

oh yeah, in that case you can for sure do ~$120!

Server noob lurking for knowledge.

>Always thought of making one for a TS3 lounge and MP game hosting. ArmA3, DayZ, ARK, Conan the Barbarian, for examples. But never knew where to start.

So here's a bump.

The focus would be on a good fast CPU and lots of RAM.

Not sure if I should post here or /sqt/...
Anyway I've got a Lenovo ix4-300d NAS and was setting it up, all went well until I've done a firmware update, which made it pretty much useless, since I can't anyway acess its' storage anymore. Searched online something about reimage the firmware but only lenovo can do that. It's stays forever doing: "the device is configuring storage".
Not sure if anyone can help or I have to send it back.

To transcode video files on the fly you'd need at leasr a four core cpu...

or a videocard, might be an even better choice

is that some fancy anti-vibration system? I've never seen that before.

some formats still don't use gpus for transcoding, but in the future it could change of course

"Lots of RAM"
So 32 / 64 / 128 GB?
Any sort of build on PCpartpicker to look at?

yes you would need to specially compile ffmpeg for it (if it's supported at all) but the speedups are incredible!

>4 core cpu
>To play an MKV
Are you high?

to transcode, not to play

Who said anything about transcoding?

...

I've bookmarked that thing for at least 4 years now, but never got around buying one.
It's a Sharkoon HDD Vibe Fixer: en.sharkoon.com/product/1190/00029#desc

Who gives a shit? That was never relevant to what was being talked about

you got told

Serious question: What's the point in a home server? What are the main uses that you can't achieve either in the cloud (for free) or hosted on your primary computer?

>you could set up raid 5,6,10 i.e. to store vital files or porn or whatever, family pictures.
>media server like plex (i'm currently running 9tb in raid 5) 800 + movies and 40 so series.
>host stuff like game servers, teamspeak, you name it
>proxy server

just google what you can use it for

>cloud (for free)
That's just someone elses computer, and if it's free then you're the product, as they say. I like to store my data myself and not have to worry about any corporate bullshit affecting it.

>hosted on primary computer
This is a fine option for most people, I think.

However, my use case is a bit different. I have five or six computers that I use regularly and I want to have easy access to installation packages, porn, pictures, videos, etc. A separate server is the easiest solution for me.

I also run my own email server on it.

current state because post office is slow as fuck and didn't deliver the CPU cooler in time

>now i gotta wait until the 18th. paid for 3 day delivery 5 days before Easter vacation even fucking happened

going to be used for Plex (up to 6 simultanious streams usually)
teamspeak
not sure what else i want to use it for, give me ideas.

for anyone wondering why the fuck 64gb
i was only gonna buy 32 but there was a sale and the sticks were on 50%

>mobo second hand 150$

Neat.
Sweet.

this is the same case I have!

i think the entire world has the Fractal R5 by now.

I don't!

I'm weird and poor mind you.

Got a motherboard running a laptop i7 740qm as the main server. Use it to host game servers and a couple of other services. Thinking of changing the 740qm for an 8350 right that someone left me but dunno if it'll really be worth the hassle of migrating things.
Got a 4130t running pfsense.

That many disk in RAID5? Have you considered RAID6?

>3 disks is minimum for raid 5
>4 disks is minimum for raid 6

i'm currently only running 3 in raid 5 because of most storage for my money and if 1 drive dies it's not a big of a deal. and i don't need the 2 drive redundancy.

i'd rather run raid 10 instead of 6 tho.

Cool! Just wanted to toss that out there.

I always thought having my own file server would be nice, as I currently use Dropbox and could replace that with my own solution. My biggest concern has always been off site backups, such as in the case of my home burning down.

i usually keep my most important documents on a cloud as well as on my own file server which has raid 5 for redundancy.

Fucking pricks at Freenas.

How do you lads backup your servers?

I'm looking at building a ~12TiB (RAID5 or RAIDZ) NAS server soon. External harddrives and hotswap bays probably aren't gonna cut it here, and I'd rather not rely on cloud services. The most convenient (and wallet-diminishing) solution I've come up with is to just build a second server with the same hard drive capacity and syncing the two with rsync weekly, effectively doubling my cost. If I went with this route, do I put the backup server in raid like the NAS, or go non-raided and just come up some organizational convention for storing my files across the different hard drives (might save me some initial cost since I won't have 12TiB of data to back up initially)? Some other method I'm not thinking of?

I see. So you keep your own server for faster access times? Also, what do you run the server on in terms of software?

just windows 8.1
i'm building a new one atm and i'm not sure what i wanna run on it.

mine is still an old nehalem box (lol)

How often do you want to backup, and how much data do you expect to change over that time period? LTO-5 drives are down to around $1400 these days (and get up to 1.5TB raw per tape). If you need to do a single tape backup every day, an LTO-7 is 6TB raw at about 300MBps. Assuming 2:1 that gets you your 12TB with a 7 hour runtime (assuming your drives can keep up with the LTO).

>freenas
>installing anything with the word "free" in its name

Well, it werked for the last 5 years. I also like the BSDs. But this time they fucked up seriously (not the BSDs but the fucks at Freenas).

Anyone tried using Ceph for a home storage server?
I want something that'll let me build a NAS out of lots of mismatched HDDs, provide redundancy, but also let me add additional drives one at a time instead of in pairs like ZFS.
What other options are there?

I just today finished a small upgrade, in which I swapped the Kingston 128GB SSDs with Crucial 250GB ones. Also redid my VMs, now the ownCloud instance alone has a 128 gig virtual drive

Btrfs does all that

Anyone down lock a ryzen to 10w?

Cool, didn't know that.
So I should use btrfs in raid1 to get the most out of the different drives, correct?
And I can just add a new drive whenever and do a rebalance to auto spread shit onto it.

Yeah, btrfs raid 1 just means any file is on two drives, even if there are more drives.

Don't try raid5/6 though, they are "experimental" and I don't think they'll ever work

I plan on building a server soon for streaming videos to my TV.

Three questions:

1. What kind of specs do I need to stream 4k?

2. What program has the most polished, netflix-like interface?

3. What specs will the receiving device need? Will an SBC work?

>1. fastest way, 4000 points on passmark google i.e. "6600k passmark" and check the score, for the cpu you're wondering about.
>2. Plex.
>3. the recieving device can basically be a potato if you want.

I'm planning to build a low power cheapo homeserver to store media, and use it as a seeding machine.

Is a amd sempron 3850 enough or is it too shit?

Dodged a bullet by not installing FreeNAS Corral when the hypetrain came by.
Still undecided on where to go now or if I should just wait for iX to unfuck themselves.

> Roll my own BTRFS storage system with Alpine
Did a test run in a VM to get familiar, seems like a good option.
Any of you thinking along similar lines?

you must be a fucking retard

>Plex
Is there anything like this that is FOSS?

Nice trips, Richard.

>implying rms would call Free Software FOSS

if you mean free, yes it is. as long as you arent sharing with other accounts. you can use 1 account to stream and you can create multiple profiles inside the main profile and set pin codes to each one if desired.

it would work. if you're planning to stream videos from it i wouldn't recommend larger than 720p

I need to setup a broadcasting server.
Have several thin clients connected to displays always displaying whatever the server streams them, being able to easily change the stream contents, which would mostly be powerpoint presentations.

ANy help?

I mean free as in freedom.

I found it for like 5 bucks used and has a TDP of 25w, my only concern is that the motherboards only have like 2 to 4 sata ports, is there any splitter or something like that I could use to add more drives in the future?

Also for 1080p movies what would work?

it would work for encoding 1080p live but might stutter or just be capped at 100% usage.

try finding a cheap ass raidcontroller? for more sata ports.

Anyone using a NAS at home? Preferably FreeNAS?
What do you use if for and does it make sense for your usecase?

I set a machine up but I am not sure if it's worth it. I access it once every few days. Also I am the only one accessing it. Not planing to make it remotely accessible either to not mess something up.
Probably not cost effective with the electricity it uses. It has ECC RAM which kinda makes me think the data is secure (copy on external drive though).

Might switch back to main drive, external copy and maybe a raspi 3 to push files around at home. The 1Gb/s is nice though, ans raspi is what, 120Mb/s?

I also think a rented vps is better for me than a home host and vps setup for running services. (Excluding testing on my main machine which won't be running for a long time.)

>inb4 shitty blog post

thoughts lads?

TS3 runs fine on a cheap vps. Would prefer mumble though (if the people you play with tolerate it). Its latency and hardware requirements are lower, bandwidth shouldn't be a problem except it's getting lots of users.

Haven't hosted games since cs1.6.

Also went overboard but for me that meant e3-1225v3 and 32GB ECC RAM.
Fractal R5 on the way. The white parts look nice but I could get tired of it so I went for the blackout edition.

R5 here soon.

so /hsg/ I have a gen 8 running ws2016, spent the past 3 months configuring the DC,DCHP,DNS,WSUS,Storage pools + teirs, AD..Pretty much exactly how I want it.

I wanted to try out REEEEEEEfs for the main storage pool but found it to be utter shite for anything other than basic storage. What are my options, back to ntfs? or is there anyway I can section off the storage and run it independantly with btrfs or zfs without moving wangblows to a VM and running a hypervisor? I want some of those features the latter fs offer but i'm not autistic enough to move to loonix

pls help.

Looking for a cheap server for MCSA and CCNA practice, any recommendations? Will probably need to run VMs with server 2k12 and linux

>CCNA
>Server
Wot

Well not so much ccna, but I just mean setting up network roles like dhcp, dns, etc.

is that the best way to setup drives to minimize noise?

Use your own computer and run virtual box for the msca exams.

If you wanna play around with virtual switches exsi is pretty feature rich.

And for netowrking get the cisco packet tracker for free to learn about routing & vlans

media centers are bloat. sshfs nfs or samba is much better.

Thanks, friendo

On a semi unrelated note, is Packet Tracer also helpful for CompTIA Network+, or is that cert too noob-tier for it to even be necessary?

Packet tracer is okay, but gns3 is more realistic as it runs actual device firmwares.

Yeah just buy an old PC. Pretty much anything from the last decade has enough horsepower.

...

Everyone please stop using raid 5, especially with big and slow Sata disks. You are just asking for data loss.

Hi guys. Someone is using ownCloud on its server? I think I want to try to use it, but I don't think it is what it would fit my needs.

Some experiences or opinnions to share? Thank you guys.

what do you recomend then?
how is 1 dead drive and still 100% functionable dataloss?

Just get a sata card.

Yes. I only use the file service part though, not the calendar and whatever else there is.

It's been working fine for me. I mainly got it so my phone could auto-upload photos to it.

I need a real file server setup rather than just 6 HDDs in my main box. Biggest thing I want is it must be able to run Plex and torrent 24/7. Not sure how to go about this desu.

what OS do you use? i got windows 8.1 on my temporary server and i cant get owncloud to even install.
>am i retarded?
