You'd be surprised by how much old software is still in use. Plenty of fairly modern cash registers run Windows 2000. Meanwhile the faggots on here complain when somebody is using a browser from 3 months ago.

I know that in addition to Windows executables, some laptop manufacturers provide BIOS updates as a DOS disk image that on boot immediately starts the update process (or something like that). Can't think of another option for laptops running a Linux distribution or a BSD exclusively.

There's some jurisdictions (mostly in Europe, I think) that have regulations stating that all computers must be sold with an operating system installed. System-builders and resellers in such areas install FreeDOS as the "No, fuck off, I don't want a Windows license" option.
