Why the fuck would you use Linux over Windows as a desktop operating system? It's shit in every way compared to even Windows 7.

It's open source though, so at least you have the opportunity to change it if you can.

>even Windows 7
Seeing as Windows 7 is the best Windows OS to date, I can tell you know nothing about the topic and should probably leave.

Thank for informing me, pajeet.

Now stop calling me.

Windows is for fucking losers lol

FUCKING LINUX!!!!! REEEEEEEEEEE

because it's better than wangblows in every way?

only thing it lacks is certain popular nonfree software. but i really don't care about that since that shit costs money that i'd rather spend on other things anyhow.

>Sup Forums in 2014 and before
>Linux users anal about security
>Sup Forums in 2017
>nu-Sup Forums full of Windows babbies and Pajeets
All the people who were serious about tech and computers went to other chans w/ less cancer.

If you have to ask - you don't need it.

this
Literally the only thing wrong with Linux is it lacks "popular software" which is DRM-ridden anyways, and isn't even the fault of Linux

2 years using it, everything just werks and is very comfy, much more so than when I was using Windows. Goddamn it's amazing what winfags are willing to put up with and defend. I swear to god you windows users have stockholm syndrome lol

you are a fucking failure if you can't even green text correctly. kys

having said that, every single point you brought up is valid. How the fuck do microshit faggots defend using such shitty software

Just keep calling them out and promoting Linux.

>Why the fuck would you use Linux over Windows as a desktop operating system?
Because I value privacy and security.

>privacy and security
also, freedom. and convenience. sure is nice to not have to restart my computer every 2 fucking hours lol

Keyboard shortcuts alone are a good enough reason for me to use linux on my laptop, which is basically only used for web browsing.

Literally never installed updates on my Windows 7 machine and it runs beautifully. Much better than Linux, even down to the little things.

nice thread senpai

Then don't use it, OP. Go blog about it on Sup Forums or Sup Forums where other faggots care about (((you))).

hahaha winfags on suicide watch, you can't make this shit up. This is the current state of Windows in 2017? My god I haven't used Windows since 2011 so I didn't know it was this fucking bad.

Well, winfags don't care about having a system that works. Windows is just a little toy OS for them to turn their computers into glorified gaming consoles. I want Sup Forums to leave.

>literally never installed updated on my windows 7
now fast-forward to 2017, where you have to jump through hoops and cripple your system just to make windows semi-usable. also, windows is designed by fucking retards so you actually NEED those security updates. Windows is criminally insecure, it's so bad that I'm convinced they make it that way on purpose.

You mean how there are Linux servers running for months on end yet you are bound to run into a BSOD or an "update" with Windows and have to shut the computer off?

yes, that's exactly what I mean.
>BSOD
let me say it again. It is NOT acceptable for the entire operating system to crash when one program is having a problem. Yet this is what happens on Windows. Fucking garbage.

>now fast-forward to 2017
You mean the year where I've been using the same Windows 7 install with zero updates since 2015? Have never gotten a virus because I'm not a dumb nigger.

hahahaha sure thing, kid.

windows 7 without updates is less secure than windows 10 you mongloid. I hope all your identity gets stolen lol

this tbqhf

It's true.
How the fuck would my identity get stolen if I don't install RATs from popup ads and keep scanned copies of my driver's license and bank statements on my desktop?

>how the fuck would my identity get stolen
>haha what the fuck is technology haha FUCK security updates LOL just use an insecure system for 10 years

Why the fuck would you use Windows? It's so bad even at being a desktop OS. There are so many better alternatives. Window has turned into shit and the only people who even try to defend it are hopeless winfag fanboys that never even tried anything else.

It's a funny thing how you can tell someone isn't white just by the way they post. Calm your autism, literally the only thing vulnerable would be my IP.
People without autism don't want to spend 10 hours ricing their SpergOS machine just for it to be half as functional as Windows.

>windows
>functional
lol

windows is broken garbage. the only people who even try to defend are are Sup Forums autismos. Even normies hate it now.

>10 hours ricing
I'd be surprised if windows could even stay up for 10 hours without restarting or BSOD-ing.

yes, I'm sure those 10 hours could be much better spent doing something productive, like gaming.

I know I'm dumb for responding to a bait thread HOWEVER:

When a someone other than a NEET who browses Sup Forums recommends using Linux, what they mean is that they recommend that you take advantage of 35 years of the most talented programmers on earth actively trying to make a system that helps them program better, as part of a culture that expects a certain set of tools to be available and operate in a particular way. They encourage you to become familiar with what serious professional developers use, in part because it means they don’t have to cater to the idiosyncratic behaviors of half-assed development environments, and in part because knowing how to use these tools properly will make you a better programmer — because that’s what those tools are for, and that’s what they’ve been optimized for.

It's really not for the average gamer/media consumer. It's for programmers and computer scientists. I would never recommend it to tech normies. What you need to understand is that this isn't really a Linux vs. Windows issue, it's more of a Windows vs. UNIX thing. Windows was designed with end-users in mind, just average people who don't understand computers and don't want or need to. UNIX on the other hand is almost a philosophy, a culture of hackers and computer scientists who wanted an environment that makes development and algorithmic computing easy without the operating system or a million layers of "user-friendly GUIs" getting in the way.

UNIX is designed to make the computer scientist's life easier. Everything at the foundation of UNIX is a small program that does one thing and does it well, as opposed to one huge program that does a million different things and opens the door for sloppy or convoluted design.

tl;dr Windows is designed for people like you, with developers as an afterthought. Linux and Unix-derivatives are designed for developers,
with people like you as an afterthought.

Holy shit kid did you really feel that compelled to reply three times?!?!?

>everyone who disagrees with me is just one person pretending to be multiple people
alright

Everyone who makes the same autistic posts with the same tone and sentence structure just long enough for the post timer to cool down is one person pretending to be multiple people, yes

I think you underestimate the number of autists on here. It's more common than you'd think.

Underrated reply. Appreciate the effort- will copypasta for when this thread pops up all week.

Windows is literally a cuckold OS.
Why would I want Microsoft to fuck my computer?
I'll fuck my computer on my own.

So...

Windows is for normal, well-adjusted people with jobs and Linux is for loser nerds with Asperger's?

You do realize that you are on a technology board, right?

i want Sup Forums to leave

Obvious bait is obvious. Sage goes in all fields.

The only thing Linux can't do better than Wangblox is games and that is quickly changing.

Oh jeez.

I'm a developer. My first job out of uni was C#/.NET development. It was a mess. I hated it. A year later, I was able to get a job at a company I had previously interned at, doing C/C++ on Linux.

It's so much more convenient, just little things that add up. Customization is a big one. It's nice to have a keybindings tailored to match your workflow, and a window manager that behaves the way you want to give you the best and most efficient workflow that fits you. Automation is another big one. One click or enter key can be worth 15,000 clicks or keys with a well-designed shell-script. Automation is done on the command line, and Windows CLI support is just sad. There's powershell, but it's only useful for basic things. It can't really compete with what you can do on Unix-like systems. There's the new Ubuntu subsystem for W10, which I've had a chance to use-- very nice by the way -- but too gimped to be fully useful, as several of the commands don't work properly. And if you're going to take advantage of a Unix-like subsystem, in my opinion you might as well just take advantage of the whole Unix environment without Windows getting in the way.

Coming back to this company was the best day of my life. This is my second year working for this company since then. Windows isn't necessarily a "bad" OS, but its strengths are in the wrong areas for developers.

You're brave, I'll give you that. Windows is notorious for being an insecure mess designed by pajeets. Please update before you hurt yourself user

I don't find the Linux desktop experience to be perfect in any way, but Windows is just THAT much of a pain to use, and they don't want to use any kind of software that butfucks me with ads.

You are not wrong. But you are forgetting about what windows has become and the fact they are starting to put adds and close up their system, while Linux is as open as possible. There are lots of reasons apart from the user experience for choosing Linux, and it is actually the reason why a lot of the people I know go for Linux even when it can be hard at times (although it can be a lot nicer than windows at times too, my mother mentioned that Linux feeling a lot less intrusive).

Windows update alone is a good enough reason to use Linux.

Windows update is just... shit. It takes forever and a day to find updates, and half of the time they fail to install correctly. Then there is the endless restarts.

And these are only your operating system updates. Your software must all be updated individually.

A distribution like Ubuntu will update in a matter of seconds to minutes, and most software is integrated into the software updater. Run it once a month and everything you have will always be up to date.

> I would never recommend it to tech normies.
I completely disagree with you here. Linux is an amazing operating system for a "tech normie", which is what I am. I am not a programmer or a scientist. I'm just an enthusiast.

It took me about six months to really get the hang of Linux. Which is far less than it took me to learn how to use MS-DOS and Windows many years ago. If I had learned to use Linux to begin with it would probably take me the same amount of time to get "good" with Windows today.

But anyway, once you do get over that initial hump of learning the new OS ecosystem things begin to make more sense than they did with Windows, and you get very spoiled with a lot of things. Apt-get is a revelation. Downloading software the "windows way" of looking through search results and clicking a download button on a website and clicking through a wizard seems an absolute pain in the ass.

And the system is just fast. Everybody likes fast.

windows fanboys will try to defend this by saying you need to disable updates.

this is bullshit, you should not have to cripple your system just to make it semi-usable.

I wouldn't recommend it to tech normies simply because most people probably don't even know what an ISO is. If you install it for them, that's a different story, but then you'll still have people that get upset because it can't run their games that were meant to be run exclusively on Windows, or because they don't like having to use alternative software over the conventional MS Office.

I agree with you 100%, though. It's great for the average person, doing stuff like web browsing/word processing/watching videos/listening to music/graphic design. It's just that most people don't have the initiative to install it themselves, learn a new operating system, and learn new software to replace the software they used to use on Windows or Mac.

>It's great for the average person, doing stuff like web browsing/word processing/watching videos/listening to music/graphic design
LMAO. No.

yeah. It does that stuff flawlessly, once it's actually set up. With less intrusion than Windows, too.

But that user is right. Especially with the amount of things that run in a browser today. Both chrome and firefox are fully supported on Linux, libreoffice works fine and office 365 even has an online version and there's even google docs, you watch videos through a web browser and downloaded videos play fantastically through mpv, there are about 30 billion music players for linux, gimp and inkscape exist for graphic design.

Anyone who disables or doesn't use Windows update is not a true Windows fanboy, and they probably don't ever do anything interesting with their computer. They probably don't even look at porn sites because they'd be too scared of "viruses", they just beg people to post it on Sup Forums for them.

>gimp and inkscape
Don't forget Krita. It blows gimp out of the water. Very impressive for an open-source painting program. It gets better every day, while Photoshop just gets more and more RAM-hungry and DRM-ridden. Krita actually allowed me to finally get rid of my Windows partition (I do a lot of digital art)

>fucking GIMP
If you actually had a job in graphic design you would realize how retarded it would be to use GIMP instead of actual good tools on Windows due to your choice of operating system.

>I wouldn't recommend it to tech normies simply because most people probably don't even know what an ISO

We're talking about different categories of people here. When I say tech normie I mean the type of person who would be familiar with an ISO file because it's a common format for video games, movies, and music to be distributed in. I'm talking about guys who installed their own copy of Windows and have probably gone through and done the services menu tweaks. These guys loved Windows XP and begrudgingly use 7. But when 7 is gone they will have no good Windows left to use. No matter how you contort Windows 10 it's still just a piece of shit. Those are the guys who can migrate to Ubuntu, more specifically to Xubuntu.

we're talking about the average user though, most people aren't graphic designers, they just use programs like PS or gimp for memes or fun little pictures.

yeah by tech normies I mean people who are incapable of installing their own operating system and just want something that's already set up

Thanks for reminding me, I was gonna mention krita but I had forgotten it's name cause I don't do much graphic design stuff.
I have heard many windows/adobe shills tell me this but they never actually provide any reasons why gimp is shit. They always just say it's shit. I'll admit I'm not a graphic designer and thus it's not my expertise so please enlighten me to why it is so shit.

Those people don't matter. Normies gonna norm. But there are a lot of guys age 25-35 who grew up in the Win 95 to XP era who have more technical knowledge than an average person who will be looking closely at Linux right now, especially as they become jaded with video games.

>please enlighten me to why it is so shit
winbabbies like to pretend that they're professional graphic designers in an attempt to legitimize their arguments, when in reality all they do with their computer is play games. $1000+ to turn their computer into a glorified gaming console. """Professional"""

I tend to agree with you as to this day not a single windows or adobe shill has actually told me an advantage the photoshop has over gimp.

>but they never actually provide any reasons why gimp is shit.

Watch any photoshop tutorial on youtube then go into gimp and try to do the same things. You'll quickly see the limitations.

At most that will just demonstrate UI differences. Please give me an actual example of photoshop being able to do something that gimp can't.

If you only knew how ridiculous you sound right now. I'm just a beginner graphic designer who works with gimp every day and every time I watch a photoshop tutorial I'm just blown away by how much more advanced that program is. The only reason I haven't installed it yet is because it's a pain to find a good clean pirated copy of it.

You still haven't provided me with any example of HOW photoshop is better. Telling me your shitty anecdotes of watching tutorials on the internet DOESN'T PROVE SHIT.

It's far, far beyond UI differences. Try to change someone's hair color in gimp then watch a photoshop tutorial on the subject. Photoshop has very intelligent selection tools that will allow you to select down to individual strands of hair that are simply impossible with gimp. You'd spend ten times as long to get a similar result that would still only be half as good. Photoshop also has tons of plug-ins that allow warps and effects gimp either doesn't have at all or has only primitive versions of.

Maybe I shouldn't have to spoon feed you this information you could just get on your own through a simple google search or watching a youtube video.

"Why is photoshop better than gimp?" is some serious /sqt/ subject material.

You are the one who has to prove that photoshop is better, I am not going to go out of my way to find this out. So far all I am hearing from you is that I am right so you have decided to just tell me to prove your point.

Gimp sucks if you're a professional graphic designer. Which no one on this board is, or if they are, they already own a mac because they can afford it and because it's easier to use that than it is to try and do work on Windows without the operating system getting in the way.

You've already been told here
why haven't you replied to this post?
>You are the one who has to prove that photoshop is better

No, I'm not. That would be like having to explain why Firefox/Chrome is better than Internet Explorer. It's not something a person on Sup Forums should have to have explained to them, so this will be the last time I comment on it.

Photoshop alone isn't really a good reason to justify using the clusterfuck that is Windows. If I needed it, I'd rather use a mac, or have photoshop running in a VM. And MS Office is extremely overrated by winbabbies who try to desperately justify their shitty OS. LibreOffice is great nowadays, and anyone who tries to say it isn't has obviously not even used it. And even then you can use Microsoft Office for free online, plus Google docs.

The only legitimate reason to use Windows over Linux would be if you do anything in AutoCAD. Everything else is just baby-duck bullshit.

Wow so hard wikihow.com/Change-Hair-Color-in-GIMP
Didn't reply cause hadn't seen it yet.

lel if you actually think the result with gimp in that scenario will be as good as photoshop you're insane

Just try it yourself and maybe you'll stop making posts about things you don't know the first thing about.

Doesn't Photoshop run well in WINE? You might have to use a slightly out of date version, but it's still going to be a lot better than GIMP.

It seems like everybody is always afraid to get their hands dirty with WINE...

the only thing linux had prior to windows 10 was

>muh price

and now not only is w10 free but 99% of the apps on it are too

unlike the old days when you basically had to pay for everything

also its super great to have updated intel graphics drivers, unlike every distro of linux ever, where they only release 1 patch for that distro release and never any more no matter what bugs might come up

which makes fucking LTS editions really fucking pointless cause you have to upgrade the entire OS just to get the newest graphics driver

>inb4 who uses IGPs

>says teh linux user

I think that in 90% of cases people on this site would do just fine with gimp as they are just making shitty memes. Also I have no motivation to try photoshop as it is proprietary shitware.
Also this, if you really need photoshop for your graphic design bs then you can just run it through wine.

on second thought bricsCAD looks pretty legit. Haven't used it though.

WINE is pretty hit-or-miss. Most people just assume a program won't work because of the stigma associated with WINE being a hacky workaround.

According to this CC 2015 has a gold compatibility rating. appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?iId=17&sClass=application

I'd recommend running your program in a virtual machine before I recommended Wine. At least that's guaranteed to work without bugs.

Fantastic response

When you start using Wine you start to feel like you're back in Windows shitland where stuff breaks for no reason and you have idea why.

so it's actually doing a good job of porting the Windows experience. nice

Wine confirmed perfect replica of windows experience.

>How the fuck do microshit faggots defend using such shitty software

They don't. These are just bait or fud threads. Windows users usually don't know about linux or think it's way too complicated and/or technical to even experiment with. They just tolerate windows and usually hate it and hate using it but like some of the applications that have been devoloped for it.
