Do you leave your computer turned on while you are sleeping?

Do you leave your computer turned on while you are sleeping?

no

/thread

yes

I leave it asleep

Unless I need it on for some reason (big download/big computation/whatever), but that happens very seldom

Yes, both of them. Its fucking freezing here anyway.

This.

I only leave it on at night if I have a lot of downloads or something to let it go through. Otherwise there's no benefit to leaving it on.

No, too paranoid.

systemctl suspend

ITT: Morons.

Putting your PC to sleep mode constantly will kill the HDD. The daily cooling and heating up causes the internal parts to shrink and expand, eventually wearing them out.

It's best to leave your PC turned on at all times.

I've been running this WD hdd for 7 years while turning my PC on and off multiple times a day. Literally never had any problems

enjoy your bearing wear, faggot

I leave it running because I'm running a website

I pay for my own electricity and the draw of a desktop is not insubstantial, so under normal circumstances, no.

My 5 years old WD Green HDD is dying slowly

Feels horrible man

>WD Green is dying
Buy a new drive now, those fuckers will limp for a long time and then just kick the bucket.

I leave it on 24/7. It's like $20/year in electricity.

Depends on whether you're running top-of-the-line components or "housefires". Leaving a build with "housefires" on and going to sleep is obviously suicidal.

Myself, I only use Asus motherboards, Noctua fans, AMD processors and graphics cards, Samsung SSD, Toshiba HDDs and EVGA PSUs, so I get a good nights sleep every day while my torrents download away.

RIP in pieces, HDD. I hope you have backups, user.

>It's like $20/year in electricity.
Is electricity basically free where you live?

400 watt cpu * 8,736 hours in a year = 3,494 kilo-watt hours.
Electricity in my area is $0.1514 per kilo-watt hour so the cost is
3,494 * 0.1514 = $529 a year.

No, since I already have a server running 24/7.

no

1. I unplug my entire desk
2. watch out CIA niggers
3. not waste as much electricity

$529 is change, it hardly even matters. What kind of shithole do you work at if 500 bucks is a lot of money to you?

>Implying full load

National average is $0.12/kWh.
8760hrs/year.
Even at 1kW full load 100% of the time it's ~$1000/year. Most computers idle at ~100W or less, so $105.12/year plus some extra for when it's running at actual load. Let's say $150/year which averages out to $12.5 per month. Chump change even for poorfags. My refrigerator and lights costs me more money.

Yes because my shitty gigabyte motherboard crashes when waking from sleep. Happens on Linux, Windows, and OSX. Ram tests fine, have tried different case and power supply. Fucking piece of shit.

Computer -> No
Server -> Yes

>HDD

Why don't you just turn it off?

I use my monitors with my work laptop and my desktop. If I turn the pc on and the monitors aren't on the right input it won't detect one of them. Plus I don't want to wait for it to boot.

I live in a third world shithole so I don't have any electricity to waste by keeping my computer on overnight.

I turn it off. Electricity is expensive as hell here

I used to, until it tried to kill me in my sleep.

How do I turn off my fan led. it is hard to sleep because they are so powerful.

hibernate erryday
expenses expenses

BIOS settings, most likely.

Ya but if you add up all the lights and stuff you probably leave on too, it could add up to quite a bit. No, $500 over the course of a year isn't a lot, but if you have 5, or 10, or 15 things costing you $1 or $2 every day all year long it definitely could add up to a substantial amount, enough to take a vacation, or buy a whole new computer, or even a 2nd hand car if your budget is kind of tight as it is.

$500 is like one day's wage for me some days, and I dont look at that amount as just "change", that's hours of my life I'll never get back.

I'm going to cut the wire instead

No. I can't sleep with my computer turned on with all those LEDs blinking and the constant whurr of the fans. These aren't excessively loud fans but I cannot stand any amount of noise when I sleep.

who said anything about lights?

Im saying a bunch of little things like $529/year adds up to a big thing if you have the attitude that "its only $500". If you pay your own bills your life probably has tons of little money leaks that you dont really think about

Yes.

No too noisy.

7 years with my caviar black and no problem

no i don whant hackerx to splode my cumputr and kill meh

No point when booting from SSDs takes seconds. Even if I need to download something big overnight I set up an automatic shutdown.

some of them.
my server and 3 of my rpis are running constantly, my workstation gets shut down after i'm done, and my netbook suspends to ram

i have 5 WD Greens where the newest one has been running for 38000 hours and they are all fine

Or don't be autistic and unplug it

My office and bedroom are the same room because I'm too poor for more square feets

So no, because my computer is fucking loud even at idle

>hdd

just turn it off and on when you are away, pussy
my servers stay on 24/7. that's it

>/threading your own post

No, but I leave my server on.

But your computer needs sleep desu

I turn it off because the light bothers me and sometimes I have to use windows 10, which likes to wake it up from sleep for updates which fires up the fans and wakes me up.

Tinfoil

Of course!

i annulate your /thread and then re/thread it

yeah no

Is it metered what does it cost?

Turning it off decreases the overall lifespan.

yes i have to be on irc in case my friends ever come back

you are very stupid
>operating at full load with no usage
>$0.15 per kWh
>500 bucks a year
I pay like 600 buts a year total in electricity, never turn off my computer, and have my AC running constantly (and it's been 80+ degrees here for the past month)
