I know this may be like. the fetus knowledge of technology, but. okay. How do I back up my laptop 100% as if i had all my shit, my user profile, my background. my files, every fucking thing onto an external hard drive? I have the hard drive but I don't want to JUST back up files. I want to back up my experience so if I lose/break this laptop while I'm away, I can plug in and continue without a hitch. How do?
I am using a Toshiba Satellite P55W-C2500X running Windows 10 (I know, but I got used to it. CBB to change it).

If you don't understand Windows backup utility, then there is no solution for you.
clonezilla
If you can't use the retard proofed tools.
I'd advise Bashing hard drives into each other and hoping for the best.
You can use Macrium Reflect to save a backup disk image file (that is a clone of your current hard drive) onto your external drive, and later boot to Macrium Reflect from a USB thumb drive while your external HDD is connected and tell it to restore that image. It will overwrite the computer's internal hard drive with the contents of the backup. If you want to restore the backup image to a hard drive on another computer (like a replacement laptop), though, you will have to pay for MR full version (or pirate it).
There is also DriveImage XML
This one, clone the whole partition into an external HDD.
Also, Clonezilla is free software, and I've used it successfully to clone partitions twice in the past and the backups worked perfectly. There's no need to use proprietary software.
Clonezilla only really works if you don't use the drives, right? You can't backup an active drive?
huh?
Say, you have Windows installed on C, you can't effectively backup C if you boot into Windows and start Clonezilla then. You need to boot to another drive.
no shit, clonezilla is a linux distro
technically you *could*, by attaching your disks to a VM and running it from there
but it's not a good idea
I thought it was also a Windows executable. In any case, it's not really useful for frequent backups unless you have the time to not use your PC for a long time, or don't mind to leave it running overnight.
i'm not familiar with tools that do live backups on windows
on linux i can just use rsync, fast and easy
Windows backup utility.
can that produce an effectively cloned disk?
I believe so yes. I never had to backup from it though, but that's what I read online.
