>use linux exclusively >want to play overwatch >install win10 and start to use it as my main OS >can't be that bad >disable everything advised to be disabled >autostart empty >every 1-2h my HDDs start spinning >pure data HDDs, nothing installed
On every single linux distro my HDDs stay off until I access them. Why is this acceptable?
Believe me, I turned off everything and googled for centuries.
I just cannot for the sake of my life stop Windows from randomly accessing my HDDs. What business does it have there?
There's just private pictures and porn. Why?

grow up you stupid manchild

Trying that hard to find a way to attack. Are you Microsoft?

Windows constantly does maintenance on the system. Check Action Center or task scheduler, and consider mucking around with maintenance.

Microsoft is judging your anime taste.

it's just the botnet searching for stuff you downloaded illegally alternatively it's just idle defrag
Sebastian Taylor
Could it be caching? Honest question
Easton Fisher
just mechanically unplug your HDD
its simples as dat

Windows 10 is optimizing the disk space on you computer. With Windows 10 Disk Space Optimizer, you can rest assured your computer will be faster than ever before. It works hard behind the scenes to deliver you the best Windows experience on the planet.
Grayson Cruz
Thanks user, you've put my mind at ease.
Gavin Lee
Can't disable the botnet.

>HDD >2017 Are you serious?
Michael Campbell
caching means things get written into memory first then the pending operations get executed together at once for better performance
Easton Miller
Na I have 2 ssds where all of my daily things are located. There's just no reason for it. I tried using process managers but try turning them on in that exact moment when it's that rare..
I tried looking for a long time hdd access tracker but there doesn't seem to be such a thing

Just use a Windows 8.1 partition for your shitty vydia. >inb4 muh dx12 meme It's already dead.

windows 10 is indexing your files, every time you go afk or idle for too long it starts doing it
they don't say windows 10 kills HDD's for nothing

overwatch is shit

Also, the striking thing, if you have an actual network card installed with actual blinkenlights the difference between Windows and Linux (or any other OS for that matter) is that Windows will *not* stop chattering on the network.
It is "Sister Mary Loquacious of the Chattering Order"
Linux, OTOH, will only send out keepalive packets and that's about it. Until you actually start sending data.
"WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING TO?!" one might ask of Windows.
Adrian Martinez
This.
Win10 is know for stalling to a crawl if you go thermonuclear and block the offending telemetry websites at the router level, as the processes frantically retry to connect to home base.

microsoft is making my computer flood packets to DDOS somebody? holy shit, who are they knocking offline? you must have some crazy insider info, or else you're just a moron who doesn't know what a botnet is, wonder which....

>why is this OS with file indexing accessing my files to index them? how can this be happening to me? must be the NSA and CIA spying on my stolen anime porn to come capture me.

Yeah he should use Windows 7 or 8.1 like Sup Forums tells him to since he has a modern processor that is not allowed to receive security updates ever.

The guy did a follow-up article where he actually did it professionally. He was only shooting the shit on twitter. It's not as bad in reality but it's still pretty bad if you have a modicum of self-respect. A bitchload of programs that shouldn't still phone home and the system will still lock on router-vele blocking. What's more insulting is that microsoft said this telemetry is system-critical and win cannot work without it and then turned around and sold a telemetry-free version of win10 to the chinese government, because they weren't taking any of their shit. In what world do the chnks get a better version of windows that the americans?
Ian Martinez
>telemetry-free version of win10 to the chinese government is this available publicly? torrent/whatever.

Have fun paying 10k+ for an array of SSD's that can hold about as much data as a cheapo external HDD.

Well he is right. though the difference isn't as big as it used to be.

In all seriousness, the ms answers topic which i found seems to be describing bad WD firmware. There is no way for OS to mark sectors as bad as one of the posters suggest.
Joseph Adams
>Repartition drive >exclude bad sectors
Wow that was fucking difficult.
Jackson Jenkins
Yes there is, doing so is what chkdsk does. It doesn't care if the error is real or otherwise.
Dominic Rivera
Have fun finding a HDD that can give you the raw blazing speed the SSD can. ProTip: You can't. If you need speed the SSD is the ONLY choice.
Oliver Gomez
Not everyone can afford to store their stuff on SSD arrays, man. When you have around 20-50TB, it's not costeffective to get a tape drive either.
Josiah Collins
We're talking about mass storage here, retard. I don't fucking need speed for a bunch of files that I rarely access.
Cameron Martin
It probably doesn't work because your little sinkhole web server wouldn't serve the right SSL certificate chain signed by the Microsoft Root CA. That said, their certificates are probably not even HSTS-pinned because of corporate TLS interception proxies.

I have a similar problem on W7. Indexing, defragging and other kinds of optimizing bullshit is all turned off. Yet, when my monitor goes into standby after a period of inactivity, my HDD (in perfect condition and also purely for storage) begins to make a fucking terrifying grating noise, lasting half a second and repeating at ~10 second intervals. It literally sounds like shredding rock on a cheese grater and the only solution is to disable monitor standby.
I don't even play games anymore, I guess I'm just too lazy to move away from FB2K and MPC-HC
Eli Wright
Just consume Overwatch in intended form.
Gavin Smith
Have you disabled superfetch?

I do the same as OP, and windows defender absolutely destroys my disk usage. And it turns it on automatically after every reboot even when I turn it off
Jack Sanders
Windows 10 automatically checks ALL files on your drives against a number of databases:
>Known peadophilia images/videos >Pirated music >Pirated movies >Pirated video games >Pirated TV shows
The reason your drives spin-up is because of the process that is checking ALL files (even the empty files that Microsoft places on all drives it detects) is running.

>When you have around 20-50TB, it's not costeffective to get a tape drive either. I don't know, wouldn't that be the point where tape drive + tapes starts getting cheaper than HDDs?

what is he using to see where the fuck is his pc connecting to?
You are a liar, but nobody expects different from a GNUmale like you.
For anyone curious, the only files getting scanned are ones the user manually uploads to OneDrive, MS research invented PhotoDNA and it is used also by Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc for any images uploaded to detect child porn.
The facts about PhotoDNA get twisted by Linux users because they are so scared at the thought of having their image files scanned against known images of sexual abuse of children... HMMMMM
Robert Nelson
What wouldn't you want Paint3Dâ„¢ to connect with home base, user? What are you? A paedophile? As you long as you're not gonna draw child porn, you've got nutting to hide.
Colton Fisher
If they are just for data set them up in a Unix-like box using SMB shares.
