Tried it in my XP VM. Nothing happened but "The directory name is invalid."
Same in Windows 7 both 32 and 64 bit.

Try to open the file C:\$MFT\123 with Notepad
Enter the whole path manually in the File Open dialog.

I think this only applies to remote desktop
Is MFT supposed to be an executable file? Because just typing in the full path to a file doesn't do anything unless it's an executable; for example, typing in C:\Users is a syntax error, even though C:\Users is a real directory. So maybe you're supposed to cd to it instead?
