They need to root the thing. And since they do this in bulk (eg: cant be bothered to look up a specific model on XDA) they use chink tools and flash boxes to get it done.
I would flash (not just wipe) the phone to stock firmware right away. If the unlock doesn't survive a firmware flash, it's not a good unlock method and you should request a refund.

How do hardware specs translate to user experience? I have only had iphones since release but I am thinking about android. It seems like the efficiency of the OS on the hardware can vary a lot between android models. Do the benchmarks actually provide a measure for user experience in terms of performance?

Sometimes, but it's best to base your purchase on the SoC, anything with a Snapdragon 625 and up are going to give you a good user experience, if you go Huawei get one that's either currently out or coming out soon because their older Kirin chips aren't so good

So yesterday my S6 edge plus started bootlooping and the only thing I can access on it is the OS loader.
However every time I try to flash a new OS to the phone using Odin I get "SECURE CHECK FAIL: (BOOTLOADER)"
I've tried multiple versions of the stock rom, none seem to work.
