Why would you ever need 18 cores?

Why would you ever need 18 cores?

"you" as an individual consumer don't

I reckon most consumers don't either

running 18 chrome tabs at once

Dumb frogposter.

Wouldn't that be dictated by the amount of RAM?

>need
dumb eurotard frogposter

your CPU has to process it before it even ends up in your RAM you dumfudge.
More cores means more things happening at once.

Oh I see, I have an IQ of 94 sorry

video editing stuff and 7zip

I like opening task manager and seeing all the cool green boxes.

are u retarded op? look at how many threads are currently active (not suspended) on your PC. Its probably in range of 800-2000. that means your PC can run 36 of those threads at the same time. (36 due to HT) and thats 4 times less context switching which is one of the most expensive operations OS can perform.

playing 18 games at once

Good thing I'm still on widows 7

>18 cores
>install linux
>thumbnail preview in firefox's file picker still doesn't work

>have 18 core cpu
>compile a new kernel on gentoo in a VM
>while also using Arch in my other VM
>while posting on Reddit in a 3rd Ubuntu VM
>while also gaymin on my windows install
>while also shitting up desktop threads from outside my Parallels VM in Mac OS.

Idk man, seems like it'd be right up Sup Forums's alley

CPU-based 3D renderers
Fuck, I'd love a cracked version of OctaneRender so I could use my GPU.

Also, video editing.

None of that shits nessceary tho

I do a lot of optimization searches. Every thread counts.

...

Why would someone shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane?

Same reason as this. Some people like to go overkill.

Neither are video games or computers in general. What's your point?

nice try, but that's not firefox

>Why would you ever need 18 cores
well, to brag online ofc

>not coding and compiling in parallel IDEs for each digit
oh sweet summer kunpai

faster rendering
faster encoding/decoding
faster archiving/extraction
faster compiling
anything that uses mutli threading will be 18x faster

I just ordered a Core 2 Quad Q9400 for about 20 dollars? How did I do?

Not if they're all playing video

why would you ever need two cores they said
why would you ever need four cores they said
why would you ever need four cores with eight threads they said
why would you ever need 16gb of ram they said
why would you ever need over 24hz they said
why would you ever need more than 720p they said
why would you ever need more than black and white television they said

flick your bean you kumquat

That would still earn you an A in school

You wouldn't, outside of the sorts of use cases where a server SKU would be better 99% of the time.

You all fucking know it's true so stop trying to act like you actually do shit.

I'll get one of these new beasts with double digit cores soon, and the only reason that isn't among the bottom three in your list is "I use Handbrake a lot and boy sure would like if that would either go faster or if I could run multiple instances at once because this sure does take awhile"

Speak for yourself nigger I actually use my computer for shit like 3Design, SQL, and writing software

8 cores is already decent desu

Why the fuck does writing software SQL statements require 18 cores?

Exactly.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love one of these, but NEETs don't need this power, they just want the power.

Gee, I wonder what sort of proprietary interest you might have in discouraging people from discussing technology they may or may not personally use?

It's truly a mystery.

Like I said before with , if anyone does a lot of personal encoding of their media / ripping of Blu-rays and DVDs they might enjoy all this extra power, but I still don't think it justifies it.

I'm just impatient and have more money than sense.

>Why the fuck does writing software SQL statements require 18 cores?

babby's first database?

Well, there you go, thanks for being honest. There's nothing wrong with it, but people need to stop trying to justify it with
>MUH VIDEO EDITING CUZ I'M A POPULAR YOUTUBER

Actually, I'd prefer if we had a RISC-V desktop with a gagillion cores.

If you need 18 cores, you're either doing some pretty bad SQL and don't know what algorithmic complexity is or you're dealing with hundreds of thousands of clients.

2fast4you?

or tens of millions of entries

kek

Right, because there are totally people in here doing data mining or exploring for oil in their parents basement.

The way the websites are heading to, I'm sure you need to use all the processing power you need.

It's not that the web browsers that are slow, it's the shitty website design. Furthermore the GUI side is getting more resource intensive. People are used to do multi-tasking.

>implying linux will even support i9

for 4k 3D VR encoding while playin muh gaymes at 60 fps in my windows 7 vm duh

What do you mean?

lot of loyalty for a hired shill

Are you upset?

Why would dumbfucks wasting their money upset me? I'll just (((get ahead by saving money and making better choices.)))

I NEED TO CODE MY ANIMUS ACESS 3 GAMES AT THE SAME TIME AND RENDER MOVIES WHILE SURFING ON THE INTERWEBS
YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND

>full openstack deploy on one metal

Pretty cool.

>need

There's that word again. If you didn't begin questions with this autistic assumption maybe you'd understand more.

I'm working on an application at work that does a lot of processing on images.
It runs in a managed thread pool, and all of our workstations are quad core processors, so it can only process 4 images at a time.

If I had 18 cores, then I could process 18 at a time.

>MOAR COARS

I know this music.

>current year
>still trying to get by with only 18 cores

Only pedos go for under 18.

A girl older than 11 is past her expiration date

>Not running a VM inside your VM so you can run a VM inside that VM

But I do shit user.

Also I'm not a retard and can develop properly multi-threaded applications .

Would NSA still find me?

most of them are idle anyway. Even my shitposting machine doesn't have a problem with them

>Windows 10(tm) exclusive

ayy lmao

Opening 18 tabs at the same time should be quite smooth with 18 cores. 36 as well. 72 even 124 should be fairly painless actually.

I did a little test and opened 35 bookmarks in new tabs simultaneously on my
R7 1700 build and OS and Firefox was fully responsive with no problem at all. Corelets can not understand this feel.

If u mean chrome tabs then amdv andviňˇˇ intel. Hv v. Gh v. Di not support 9000GB ram so 145tabs wozlsbf not bvebpainless

By the time that I need 18 cores for HTML5, Adobe, gaymin, and general purpose usage, silicon and x86 probably wont even be in use anymore

covfefe

>Why would you ever need 2 cores?
>Why would you ever need 4 cores?
>Why would you ever need 8 cores?

Reminder Threadripper 16 cores will be $850

Single core is all you need.

memes aside, why don't we have one super powered CPU instead of 18 mediocre ones tapped together
Is the technology not good enough?

...

You're oversimplifying it way too much.

Because laws of physics.

The silicon doesnt allow it. Ever wondered why CPUs havent gotten faster in GHz since like 2008? There are things like IPC increase but thats essentially just doing more stuff at the same time.

This is a bit like how you can't "super power" one car to handle your city's whole car-based transportation.

so the technology is at its limit and we have to stick 18 CPUs together to make it 4 times faster

>tfw you fell for the 18 core meme

Encoding chinese cartoon BD rips with 12-bit HEVC2 in less than a minute on placebo settings, for example.

>saying computers aren't necessary in currentYear()
