Neither.
I prefer the static rendering and lack of JS/Flash interactive slide bullshit on the left, but I prefer the simplistic column design of the right.
Arstechnica mobile is my ideal. I don't like that the desktop view has a big clusterfuck of featured articles.

Left. And not just because I'm a weeb, because the designers still know what information density is. The jp one is an objectively more usable website with less space wasted on bullshit.

I prefer the left one as well, specially the logo and the color scheme. Although I think that left have too much info for a homepage.

Not that user but, I switched from a multi monitor setup to a single monitor setup and will never go above my current screen size simple because I don't like having to move my head just to see everything on my screen. Even if I did have a bigger screen I still think it would be better to have all the information in view as opposed to spread out, forcing your eyes to move for no real reason. Density is nice.
