G3 Power Mac

I've managed to snag a G3 power mac from work when they were clearing out all of their old servers and computers, anything useful to use it for; or better yet, any GNU/Linux distributions I should try out?

literally useless trash

That thing was so ugly, and SO HEAVY.
My highschool had one computer lab with 30+ of them.
I got a job as an assistant for the summer one year(2004 or thereabouts) and we had to transfer all 30+ to storage when the eMacs came in. We had to load them on a tiny cart 6 at a time, and each of us had to grab 2 in hand(there were 5 of us) and haul them to the other side of campus in two trips.

I didn't even get to keep one because the RAM had been stripped out for the G3s in another lab.

Useless. Next time grab the sexy G5 and replace the guts with modern hardware.

What sort of monitor would that have been paired with back in the day? It would just look wrong next to a common beige PC monitor of the time.

This monstrosity, which weighed more than the computer did.
Also, the legs were ribbed on the bottom, so the edges dug into your hands when you picked it up.

I use mine as a file server since it's quiet and sits in the corner of my office without causing any problems. Runs Debian just fine.

You may want to max out the RAM and replace the IDE boot disk with a CompactFlash card or something for speed. I have a SATA card for connecting my storage but it's not bootable.

Put Panther 10.3 or Tiger 10.4 on it.

There's not much you can do with it other than nostalgia.

Same performance as an rpi, 50 more physical space and energy usage

Coffee tabel.

The asymmetry triggers me
Storage and energy aren't issues. Also all my data storage is safely kept internally. I also back up to DVDs which the G3 handles great.

Get TenFourFox or Classilla and use it as a basic shitposting machine.

Looks great with a proper paintjob, mod it to mATX and turn it into a Hackintosh, it's a fun project. I did that once but lost interest after it was finished and sold it for a 800€ profit.
Pic related is not mine but I copied that exact paintjob.

>literally useless trash
We're talking about the PowerMac, not pass users.

It's still useful.
>gutting a G5
You're a piece of shit.

>mod it to mATX
You're also a piece of shit.

I really cant understand why grown adults curse each other SO much... Its so stupid...

Fuck you.

I have a G5 as a bedside table. One of the best pieces of furniture I own. PPC workstations are useless as computers.

>You're also a piece of shit.
I didn't harm any hardware, found them at a recycling center and turned 4 systems ones into 2 working systems, leaving me with 2 completely broken ones. Sold the working Macs and my modded one.
I still have the other case around.

You're okay then

But that's wrong, especially when talking about G5s. The only reason I don't still use my dp G5 as my main machine is one program that doesn't support PowerPC.

To put things into perspective, the Nintendo Wii has a 2x-3x times faster version of this CPU. It doesn't have Altivec. You could use it as a router or networked file server. Don't spend any money on it adding network cards or RAM. It's better off being a mailbox.

GC/Wii/WiiU doesn't have Altivec either.
If it's a 450mhz unit, it's pretty close to GC in CPU, but still a mile away since it's not just 36mhz seperating them, as the GC PPC cpu doesn't need to do I/O or Audio or any OS tasks, it's just for the game code.

old hardware like this is literally where Gentoo shines. I tried Debian on my G4 Power Mac, but most things were too slow. Not Gentoo. Runs like new.

If anyone is considering doing this, just be sure to compile it on a different machine. Compiling with a machine like this will probably melt it.

OpenBSD's the best modern OS for PowerPC Macs

Gentoo works great with PowerPC.

So install gentoo is actually a valid answer for once.

kill yourself, you absolute nigger.

That's actually pretty cool, kinda want to build one myself.

G5 isn't totally obsolete. I know for a fact that FreeBSD has a PPC64 distro, maybe some linux distros too.

It's a capable OS 8/9 system that can run plenty of shit you can come across on the Macintosh Garden. You could put Linux or BSD on them too, but why would you squander moderately unique hardware on the same boring, shitty old general-purpose libre applications your desktop PC will run ten times faster anyway? Try something new, maybe you'll learn something you wouldn't have given a fuck about before.

If you're that poor that $10 a month will send you overboard financially and you live in such a tiny space that something this compact would be a problem, you should probably be out working instead of shitposting on Sup Forums.

And depending on what model of RPi we're talking about those things are pure trash, even 20 year old workstations can run circles around those pieces of hipster shit and look way less autistic while they do it. Shill a real SBC next time.

Install Mac os 9 and use it to run older applications.
The newest os that can run on these is tiger, which has some apps modded to work on it (Like a version of firefox) But most newer apps won't work on it anymore.

GC/Wii/WiiU doesn't have Altivec though.

>I waste resources because I can
Must be a js dev. Have fun at elecroncon. Oh wait.

Install an Amiga clone os, and that's all I could think of right now.

That's literally the first thing he said in his post.

Feeling a little upset after your cheapie cardboard NAS got starved of (You)s in the home server general? Don't worry, maybe some day you'll be able to afford something worth talking about.

>I spend all day producing nothing of value on Sup Forums but at least my toys are energy efficient
Must be a liberal. Have fun at the 2016 election. Oh wait.

You could sell it on ebay. Nostalgiafags get off on old Macs.

...

Funny how ugly mac products used to be, before they became the ultimate fashion normie thing.

That's not ugly, you just have shit taste.

>space heater/trash can

shit's useless. belongs in the garbage.

...

It looks like a fisher price toy

>t. autistic contrarian
you probably think the beige era was their golden age too
that shitty design was what made them into a design icon in the first place

Nah

>grown adults
There's the problem.

Useless except for preserving old mac stuff. Load it with OS8 and lots of old games if you can.

What motherboard rev?
What CPU speed?

Install a bigger HDD (Max is 128GB)
Max out the RAM (4x256MB PC100 or 133)
Install Mac OS 9
Go to macintoshgarden.org/ and download all you want. They have a shit ton of software. Operating Systems, wide range of software and games.
