At least the German student offers at campuspoint.de/ are partially being sold without OS.

I have a very old VAIO laptop (pic related, came with vista about 11 years ago i think) and after several years using it i think it's time to upgrade to something better, it can barely handle 3d rendering anymore
i do not have much money to invest on a new laptop and i am considering a refurbished thinkpad
which model would you suggest with these specs:
- cpu faster than 2.26GHz - at least 8gb, ideally 16gb but would that even be possible? - 13" - less than 500$
would this even be possible? from what i understand by reading the wikis, the x200 model would be the only sub-15" option, is that correct? pity it's fucking expensive
t. clueless and poor
Jackson Sanders
What's your use-case? Btw CPU clock speeds don't really matter anymore since about 2008 or something.
I have a W700 with 3 GB ram on a 64bit duocore system (ubuntu gnome), how much more ram can i install on it? I also heard ram is really expensive right now, should I wait? Thanks in advance!
Yeah 1" doesn't really make that much of a difference, it's still better than the piece of shit you posted.

Better in not meeting the requirements? Or better in worse trackpad and keyboard?
Dominic Young
I normally use my laptop to sustain myself, freelancing in these fields: - programming, usually scripted frontend faggotry (using vim or sublime text) - running a lamp server for testing - working with vector and bitmap images for print (using photoshop, illustrator, indesign) - editing videos (aftereffects and premiere) - making music (fl studio) - 3d rendering (usually blender, other programs are way too heavy) - live vjing (resolume)
It's very clear to me that such tasks, especially 3d, should be done on a well perfoming desktop; but I travel often on foot or bike and stealth camp around 3/4 of the yea, so i need something portable; 13" would be ideal compromise between retardedly small and too big to fit in my backpack / bike bags (14" hardly fit during colder months because of all the extra bullshit i have to carry with me)
It's also very clear to me that it would be better to switch to FOSS software and hardware, and where I can i stick to software that interjects for a moment.
thank you very much, i assume that the 1.9GHz CPU is faster than the 2.26GHz i have is that correct?
Benjamin Long
>any reason why an X260 is not a good idea? >I can get a new one for like US$630, while the X220, X230, all of them used, are around US$330
My question stands
Adam Jenkins
Better in every conceivable way minus the non important 1" difference in screen size. I personally offended you would even suggest someone buy a *40 series thinking.
Brody Collins
Retro when
Colton Morales
Ok sure *50 and newer have the better touchpad keys again, but apart from that Thinkpad keyboards are still better than any Dell imo.
Logan Cook
>Thinkpad keyboards are still better than any Dell imo. You're probably right. I just had such a bad experience with the *40 series touchpads that they should never be recommended.
Owen Jenkins
I wanted something portable with good battery life and almost got an X260 myself from the lenovo outlet. I found cheap t440s with a 1080p screen / swapped trackpad and got that instead.
If price isn't a concern, I think the main advantage of the x230 is that it can be corebooted. Libreboot will be available by next year too, supposedly.
Jacob Kelly
Never ever
Bentley Powell
>thank you very much, i assume that the 1.9GHz CPU is faster than the 2.26GHz i have is that correct?
if the X260 has a 1080p screen, 16gb RAM, and a 500gb SSD then yeah that would be a much better deal than an X230 with 4gb ram missing the hard drive
and vise versa...
Hunter Hughes
My opinion: if you're actually using your mobile computer as a mobile mobile computer at uni, work or elsewhere absolutely get the newer models. The battery life is just so worth it.
Hey, wich eGPU should i get for a t420? I don't want to spend too much, and i think the newer ones would be bottlenecked aniway.
Evan Torres
X220 and X230 can get up to 12 hours with the extended battery
Cooper Kelly
Is terraria playable on x220?
Colton Hall
>is terraria playable on intel hd 3000
google it
Owen Powell
im using gtx 1070 amp
Logan Williams
I downloaded it yesterday, but still didn't ran it. Warframe runs at 30-50 fps here though, i know terraria can be a bit demanding on large maps, but i don't see how it wouldn't run it.
Aiden Diaz
Just to be sure, the egpu will only work in an external monitor, right?
Could you explain to me your setup? Including power adaptors and everything.
I could see myself getting a gtx1050 maybe, but not an 1070.
William Jones
If it says no optical drive does that mean it was taken out and there is now just empty space. Or did it not have it in the first place. m.newegg.com/products/9SIA5HA45Z6592
Luis Thomas
That model doesn't have an optical drive. They probably put it in the name because at the time that model was released, the concept of an ultrabook with no optical drive was still new.
It wouldn't have been out of the question for someone to buy a laptop having mistakenly assumed that any computer would obviously have an optical drive.
Julian Price
Thinkpad t520 vs t530
Mason Nguyen
Neither, 15" is too old fashioned and heavy.
Leo Clark
not an issue the issue is price
Elijah Robinson
are the spec differences worth the price to you? it's subjective
Jace Lee
well its 30 dollar difference but I get A qaud core i7 and usb 3
Jordan Davis
i got this T60 running both pfsense and freenas on VMs , pfsense have his own dedicated 2 lan to usb adapters and soon getting a usb 3 express card in order to add an external hard drive to the freenas vm any other experimental stuff i can do with it? >inb4 potato quality
I found an x230 for 192 dollars Has i5 3rd gen 2600mhz 4gb ram expandable up to 16 320 gb hdd In great condition Is this a good price
Isaiah Lewis
Honestly if you're doing it for i7 and usb 3, I wouldn't. Some low percentage improvement in some benchmark is not worth it... and for usb, I can't remember the last time I transferred data via usb, so that's the only usecase usb 3 matters right? I don't charge my phone via laptop.
Gabriel Wright
battery? condition of the battery?
seems like a good price yeah
but you'll NEED to get an SSD, also depending on your uses might want to upgrade to 8gb RAM
and if the battery is shite and you want battery life then it's another $60-70
Original battery doesn't say condition. Just says tested to hold a charge. They are a Microsoft certified refurbished if that counts for anything
Dylan Thompson
The I7 is ehhh but the usb 3 The only reason is the external I I use for backups is usb3
Angel Phillips
How big of a difference is grade a to grade b
Jeremiah Reyes
depends on the reseller, usually they define what their 'grades' mean
(it's pretty irrelevant)
Alexander Butler
depends on the person selling it. Generally though, Grade A is going to appear to be brand new, while Grade B means there might be subtle signs that it was used (tiny scratches, etc) but no significant wear n tear.
Dominic Morris
hey guys i found a x230 for 320$ and has: an i5 3380M 8gb ram 128gb ssd it has the battery and the notebook cover and it comes with a dock station and the original charger
Ryan Johnson
Where can you get a new X260 for $630?
Kevin Sanchez
Is the wifi switch on x201 actually a hardware switch?
Mason Morales
yes, that is kind of the point
Chase Brown
I should probably get a T440p for $170, right? Being able to drop in a FHD panel feels kinda nice since I won't be doing that in my X220 any time soon..
Landon Morales
My shitty HP spectre laptop recently broke. Started looking for Thinkpads, found a T440p for 170$, worth it?
Christian Garcia
in Chile
Cameron Bailey
Yes I know, but plenty of laptops have software switches nowadays. Thanks anyway, just making sure.
Jose Peterson
>spectre aren't those the new hip and cool that cost over 1 grand and it already broke?
Adrian Davis
I have a Latitude E6410 but I can't find any working WiFi drivers. The network card is foxconn Anyone know where I can get Dru era for it? It seems to be an aftermarket lan card
Easton Scott
Get out of here CPUBoss shill. CPUBoss is total cancer.
Brandon Anderson
>mfw waiting for my P51 in the mail It says it's coming tomorrow!
Austin Cooper
So then it probably won't be worth spending an extra 20 dollars to get an a condition one
Nathan Lopez
How safe is it to handle a thinkpad like a tablet? Assuming the HDD have been replaced with SSD or booting from USB flash drive.
Eli Nguyen
how to remove this shit?
think it was done by one of those paint pens
would a mr clean magic eraser work?
soap and water is kind of out of the question
Thomas Anderson
The T430 only has 2 usb 3.0 connections, but intels data on the chipset says it supports up to 4 and something like 10 usb 2.0 ports.
Intels schematics also mention that the usb lines do not need any resistors, it seems to be a straight trace to the port.
It'd be neat to add some usb 3.0 ports, but I doubt those traces are exposed ;(
Isaac Morales
I've always manhandled them by the battery, never had any issues
Landon Bennett
probably best to paint over it
I've been thinking about picking up a can of rubberized paint for various uses, and I've thought about painting my power brick with it
Michael Gomez
Havet hade it for 1,5 years. The display broke after a few months and the charger after a year. Have used a non brand charger since then now it won't charge at all. Well at least I can salvage the m.2 ssd and AC WiFi card
Henry Nguyen
I'm from Costa Rica and if I found a new x260 for that price I'd buy it immediately
Camden King

Isopropyl alcohol, failing that, windex.
Parker Barnes
I was thinking of getting x220 or x220t, and have it as "beat up" laptop to use it when traveling and since I mostly likely will be lending it to other people to use. I know the SSD will get rid of HDD mechanical failure because of movement.
But what about CPU fan? Should it be fine as long as the vents are not blocked?
William Cox
cpu fans are fine, screen hinges are fine
although the X220 and X230 are prone to cracking the corners of the palmrest
and the tablets have these little rubber screen holder things on the sides of the keyboard bezel that are also prone to snapping off, doesn't really affect functionality though
Lucas Morgan
>not wanting people to think your a tech specialist Wew lad
Jonathan Reed
magic eraser couldn't hurt try rubbing alcohol first where did you find an ex-BHS laptop?
Henry Murphy
what does tpg think of the t530 keyboard?
Owen Wood
It's fine unless you've gotten used to the older style..
Camden Ortiz
Does the T420 uses the same RAM sticks as the X220? Or is there limit to the clock speed?
Gabriel Lopez
My T41p is having some GPU issues so until the heat gun arrives, I put a coin inbetween the heatsink and the keyboard to give it a little push.
It says DDR3. I thought you need SODIMM for the T420?
Luke Jenkins
You do, would be pretty stupid to fit full size sticks in there, don't you think?
Landon Ortiz
they are 204-pin SODIMM DDR3 modules
Jayden Jackson
ah BHS was a British department store so i thought you got it from the UK
Andrew Lewis
What if I found DDR2 SODIMM RAM chips?
Samuel Taylor
Will not fit, you need DDR3
Connor Lopez
you'll have a hard time fitting it in the ram slot
Grayson Ward
And if I use sticks of different clock speed it would run as the slowest one?
Caleb Taylor
X220 or X220t? I found both for the same price with the same specs.
Liam Sanchez
4GB per slot. I don't think DDR3 is going to get any cheaper in the foreseeable future since DDR4 has replaced it, but 4GB modules shouldn't be too expensive yet. Certainly nowhere near as bad as 4GB DDR2 modules.
Oliver Watson
Ohh hell yeah the guy thats selling the t530 I got him to go down 30 dollars
Ryan Bell
do you use cooling pads on your Thinkpads and does it help with temps?
Zachary Turner
Why did RAM get so expensive?
Angel Roberts
I have both and I only ever use my X220, I did put an IPS panel in it though which you won't have to do on the tablet version.
Noah Brown
I use another Thinkpad underneath my W520. It works.
Hunter Richardson
As I said, DDR4 replaced DDR3, so DDR3 is out of production and will only go up in price from here on out.
