Windows 10 vs Windows 7 on a x220
The windows partition is in there for windows based school programs. Since this is only for school, I won't be watching porn and shit on it so I don't really care if the whole government is watching me use excel. I'm wondering which one is going to perform better and smoother given my situational needs?

Win10 is better on lower end gear (uses less ram and less cpu time for background tasks, also coalesces timers so it uses less battery even at the same load)
Both Win7 and Win10 will now spy on you, Win7 can be made safe by refusing certain updates, but you'll need to keep yourself apprised of these updates at all times and keep updates flowing in otherwise (or you'll end up like the cryptolocker victims)
I personally use Win10 in a VM for anything that's win exclusive and won't run in wine.

Install LTSB, activate with whatever KMS utility you please (pyKMS is 'foss' (actually unlicensed), the source is required to use it and it's be audited as not being a crazy backdoor like some of the Windows KMS utils downloaded from 'hacker' sites)

I usually encrypt my Win7 install with VeraCrypt incase the laptop ever gets stolen, should I continue to use VeraCrypt with Win10 or move on to something new?

You can download it from Microsoft. Not activating Win10 limits some of the customization and gives you a half-transparent "Activate your Windows" line in your bottom right corner. Actual usage is not limited in any way.
