I use Telegram because it works on multiple devices and has a nice desktop client. I know it's not autistically secure but it's better than Facebook and works really well for my circle of friends.

I use Trillian. Works on PC, mobile and web, all at the same time, logs me into most major IM sevices, and stores my chat history in the cloud. I use to use pidgin, but it felt like text only and I couldn't send files or do video chat.
