I have this old Pentium 3 rig lying around and a friend of mine came over yesterday and finally got it working with me. It has a beyond repairable install of 98SE on it and I don't want that anyway so i wanted to know what Sup Forums thinks i should put on it.
If you had to suggest anything, this is the stuff I want:
>OS
>Office software
>web browser
>image viewing and possible video playback
>music playback
Specs:
>Socket 370 Pentium 3 1GHz
>128MB RAM
>20GB HDD
>ATi Rage something 8MB (seems like a bottleneck to me but I don't have anything else)
>really generic soundcard
I already tried latest slackware and it gave a super generic kernel panic.
Suggestions, Sup Forums?
*nix for a Pentium !!!

bitch do you really think im so stupid that i didn't already google that shit
thanks for the bump tho
>do you really think im so stupid
else you wouldn't be making this thread faggot
and you would know loonix comes with all that software because installing anything on it is a nightmare
Unironically Gentoo.
also slackware isn't even listed in those recommendations for old PCs you stupid faglord
get LobotomyUbuntu and come back with results
>and you would know loonix comes with all that software because installing anything on it is a nightmare
some distros do and some don't and some come with software that's shitty and has better alternatives
>compiling anything on this CPU
pls
i mean anything larger than fucking irssi
shit would take days
>compile on a different pc
>use ssh to transfer files
Why not?
fuck
you're not wrong
but i would still rather install from a disc famalam
Puppy Linux or BunsenLabs Linux might be worth a try.
not *nix but haiku
Needs at least 512MB of RAM if you plan on doing anything except stare at the desktop. Haiku on 128MB will not be fun.
downloading a puppy iso
any other suggestions? i might just fuck around with this computer all day, maybe by the end of it all i'll have a real use for it
Try to install IBM OS/2 on it. It can run OS/2, DOS, and Windows 16/32 bit programs. It's pretty good and runs on nearly nothing. OS/2 Warp 4 needs like 64MB of RAM, 1GB storage, and a couple MB of video memory to run smoothly.
i think i remember my friend trying to do that and he couldn't get it to work but it sounds like fun so i'll give it a shot.
Don't let the OS/2 desktop shell discourage you. It's fucking horrible.
Windows 98
Why would you want something else?
Make a 98 gaming rig out of it
gentoo has support for compiling on another computer in the same network IIRC. might be interesting for you.
im not really attached to 98 that much and the same can be said about its game library
what the hell that sounds weird but interesting
>think
No, I know.
>video playback
>music playback
That processor doesn't even have the set of instructions required for the DRM and other stuff. Forget about anything related to video or music.

ive seen this thing play mp3 and mkv files just fine so i don't know what you're talking about
After grabbing all the isos i want (puppy, OS/2 W4, void) im starting to burn them all and im gonna try them in order like this
>OS/2
>Puppy
>Void
