RIP Desktop Applications

When was the last time you used a real desktop application that wasn't your web browser?

How does it feel knowing that all future software projects will be written as webapps that run in your browser or in a chromium container?
Are you rushing to update your skills and keep up with the webdevs now jumping to applications development, or are you gonna get left in the dust?

Citrix.

I'm not a programmer so I don't have to worry about this stuff, Sup Forums BTFO

It's saturday today, so exactly one day since real companies actually use desktop software.
Outside work muh pdf reader, evolution and zenmap

>implying most applications in the software industry are front-end

lel

just earlier
Notepad++ and Renoise

other programs I use routinely are Audacity and GIMP

fagex saw this coming 20 years ago.

i used Audacity a day ago to autistically edit a song to be slowmo to play while imagining a death scene for a character in the made up tv show in my mind

>not using chrome to browse pdfs
Lol cya

I appreciate your autism

the future is yours

Browsers are the biggest example of the inner system effect going way too far. This shit is getting absurd.

I even watch youtube exclusively in mpv.

I like you.

WTF IS WRONG WITH THIS GEN? "All my stuff is in the buttcloud, it's there forever, safe and secure".
>Internet freedums falling left and right
"i'll just re-dowload it, fuck you "physical-media" plebs

>openwith
Is it going to work in ff57?

Feels good. Finally we'll have truly cross platform tools that don't look like the shit and that work everywhere.
I do use a lot of non browser stuff, but 90% of my time is spent in a browser now even so.

im using 3 programs right now idiot

sia-ui
steam
qbitorrent

It is not true. The web app emulator is not as effective as compiled software is for work, and businesses are not too stupid to forget this, even if it may look that way from your PC as an entertainment habits.

Stop trying to scare dumb kids, anime scrotter.

Every minute of every day.

>Cinema 4D
>Unreal engine 4
>Torrent
>bandicam
>overclocking software
>daemon tools
what now bitch

The thing is it doesn't matter most of the time since performance isn't really an issue for 95% of tasks these days. Serious video and image editing software or drafting software will never really be web apps but most in-house apps will be.

>satania

>what now bitch
enjoy being an extreme minority of users as the market moves away from people like you and severely limits your options. sooner or later, be it 10 or 20 years you won't have a choice but to join everyone else.

When i was creating the content that you so happily consume using your web applications

>won't have a choice but to join everyone else.
Whahaha goims told same shit about windows.
ALWAYS WE WILL HAVE CHOOSE.

Why not just use python+pyqt? Isn't that just as fast to develop with?

she's the best waifu.

>programming will be done in browser
What do you use a computer for that you never use desktop applications other than a browser?

Hah. Normies, maybe. The rest of us patrician folk still extensively use desktop applications.

not when the computer is literally a locked down web browser lel. Some day you won't have a choice. hurts knowing that doesn't it :)

programming is literally the only thing I regularly do outside of the browser, but there's no reason you can't code in the browser and run things in the cloud.

Vigne is better

Anyway I still use itunes, last.fm, VLC, utorrent/transmission on the daily, and then steam + games

I guess very specific programming programs for work and school as well.

remmina, hexchat, atom, vim, gimp, emulators, just to name a few

Windows 8 and 10 can mount ISOs without need of third-party software.

For other things like .bin and other, use Virtual CloneDrive. It's lighter and Daemon-Tools is adware infested shit now.

I thought atom was an electron app?

Like an hour ago.

>Chromium

Music Player
Video Player
Image Editors
Video Editor
Terminal Emulator
Video Games
Word Processor
Spreadsheet Program
Document Reader
Comic Book Reader
Torrent Client

Is all software I use that is not a web browser.

i'll always have a choice

What is VS Code?

In the future, one will need only two real applications on their computer, a web browser and a terminal emulator.

of course, you will still have native apps, but those native apps will run as daemons that serve web content to a certain localhost port, which you will access through the browser.

>looks exactly the same on every platform
>no more messing around with weirdly incompatible UI toolkits
>easier to debug stuff as an end user (use browser's inspection system rather than pulling out the debugger and disassembler)

Just waiting for webassembly and websockets to stabilize, and then we will truly be in the future.

I like making programs with a browser front-end so I can chuck it on a Pi and access from all devices, as
said. I rarely use desktop GUI except for VSC (which is basically a browser anyway). I can't really think of any other desktop applications of much use to me beyond standard utilities like a pdf reader and video player.

I have notepad and calculator open at the moment.

SAI 2.0, photoshop, 3DS max, Fusion 360, color profile keeper, wallpaper engine (?)

Visual Studio doesn't come in a web app.
Yet.

>When was the last time you used a real desktop application that wasn't your web browser?
Explain. Fucking 30 minutes ago I opened mGBA to play Final Fantasy II, and that's an application that consumes a lot of CPU.

>muh niche manchild app

>Visual Studio Code

Nothing really, web applications do everything I need. We just need to ban mediocre webdevs from making bloated slow web apps and we'll be fine

Of course shitpost would come as soon as I mentioned videogames even if they weren't the point, not surprised.

>Visual Studio
>IDE
>one of the most resource-heavy programs ever

>Visual Studio Code
>Glorified text editor
>pretty light on resources

Okay, you somehow manage to implement both of them.
Just why?
Sandboxing has a huge toll on performance and people probably won't use it if it doesn't provide the same level or better performance than the native desktop version.
A lot of apps suddenly becoming cross-platform would be great though.

Well, Google Hangouts is such trash that saturates my CPUs, whereas any video chat application (or even Flash-based AIM video chat) used to be light on resources on 2004 machine. They're gonna have to fix their shit or pray processors get a lot faster.

>or are you gonna get left in the dust

Chrome's browser fails to render some PDFs correctly. See the letter alpha (among others) in cs.princeton.edu/courses/archive/fall00/cs426/papers/smith95a.pdf

Evince displays those symbols just fine.

t. unemployed NEET

There is no competent word processing software on a browser application. Microsoft Word is still the industry standard and GoogleDocs is far behind reaching that level.

Docs is competent if I can use it for every uni writing assignment I've had. It's majorly lacking however, that's for sure.

Did you ever see employeed NEET? Well, stop posting then

>being the client (the cuck)
>not being the unix server on top
>not mining and selling out the shit out of the clueless normalfags in every way possible (ekansovi.com lmao)
>not blocking all that shit yourself because you're in the know
>not always having a shelter in form of unix shell with its amazing normie-hostile tools in case of a botnet apocalypse
web == normie cash milking farm
unix shell == the guys that collect the cash

muh latex aka fuck easy things go learn codes desu fampai

Let's see what I am currently using:
MPD + ncmpcpp - native
urxvt - native
zsh - native
Firefox - native, with 4 pages open, none are "apps".
Irssi - dang it, still native.

Conclusion, OP is a fag and should post in /lgbt/ not Sup Forums (forgot three letters there OP, eh?).

i use cad desktop applications everyday almost

Electron fgts. Now you can code a desktop app in js in 2 weeks.

?

Like 3 minutes ago.

If i ever had to use a browser to program i would kill myself.

my terminal

I use desktop applications everyday.

Adobe programs, Office suite, IDEs, Sublime....

Everyone uses desktop applications all the time. The real question is when was the last time you used a smartphone application that isn't a web browser? Other than texting and calling, the browser can do everything you would ever need to do on a phone.

But I'm using one right now

Fuck off

>When was the last time you used a real desktop application that wasn't your web browser?

Discord
Steam
VLC
My bittorrent client
OBS
Audacity
Vegas
LibreOffice
Thunderbird
Virtualbox

nano, ls, cd, git, wget, curl, cron, cat, pct, transmission-daemon, nginx, youtube-dl, etc.,

just to name a very, very select few

I wouldn't call nginx a desktop application.

Definition of: desktop application (1) An application that runs stand-alone in a desktop or laptop computer.
