I also use Telegram which is FOSS but there's a problem and it's that the vast majority of my contacts use WhatsApp.

It's like when Microsoft had no choice but to provide an update for XP after WannaCry. It's beautiful. It's a tacit admission of defeat in the struggle to force users to upgrade.

Telegram is not FOSS. The client might be but server side is proprietary. IIRC, encryption is disabled by default except for "secret-chats".
