This thread is about the appreciation of horology, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine watch, clock, or other timepiece.

What's the most important aspect when choosing a watch; how it looks, how people will perceive me, how exceptional the technology of the watch is, how productive of an investment it is?
Please help.
Carson Rivera
You have to decide how in convenient the movement its
will it run to a dead stop in less than to days? need servicing, cost thousands of dollars
those are the signs of a good watch
Leo Jackson
It has to be a combo of all of the above, which actually makes it hard to choose much other than Rolex. But I love Rolex so it's not a problem.

It's the dive watch equivalent of the SARX033/35. Extremely high quality finish for an affordable price at some sacrifice to movement. The 6R15 is still an excellent movement though, it's not like there's much to complain about it.
Nathan Bailey
That is fucking ugly...
Parker Kelly
>$300 >tfw you were born too late for the time of $300 Rolexes

Enjoy the prestige and engineering that went into your Model T while the modern Camry owners leave you in the dust.

camry eg for normies who don't know anything about cars

The point was that you're a luddite and everyone is leaving you in the dust without even trying.

>Born too late to fly Pan Am >Born too late to fly on a Concorde >Born too late to buy a brand new 1675 GMT-Master for $300 >Born too late to fuck a Pan Am flight attendant

Jayden Miller
>The 6R15 is still an excellent movement though, it's not like there's much to complain about it. It really is. Seiko's been "upscaling" it recently too. The 3-500 dollar watches they put out now tend to have movements like the 4R35 these days.
I also like that it's low beat, meaning it really only "needs" servicing after 10 years.
I also like the looks of the watch in many ways, but it's around 1k, which for me is a tipping point where I might have to consider saving up for an actual upscale watch.
Levi Mitchell
kek youre such a faggot. hating on vintage cars too? most of the most beautiful cars ever made arent modern. you sound like a 13 year old whos tiny wiener gets hard looking at whatever the newest lambo is on his xbone need for speed box

After I get my Rolex/Omega fix, what should I aim for once I am retired + have fuckloads of money?
Vacheron looks alright, though I'm curious about the Royal Oaks. Pateks looks alright though it definitely looks like a grandpa watch. Kind of have an eye out for a good looking A Lange. Are those any good?
Luis White
That Rolex is upside down on his wrist. Looks like his right hand, correct?
Jaxon Turner
Qt.
Couple of questions though about the quality since it can be weird. Do hands properly align? How's the lume?
Parker Kelly
ALS is arguably the best non-independent. Divine finishing, diverse aesthetic options, the list could go on.
Josiah Barnes
Short answer is it depends on how much you want to spend.
Lange runs all over basically any other large manufacturer at the moment - would definitely take a modern production Lange over a modern production AP, pp, or VC.
You could also look at smaller independent manufacturers - journe, MB&f, urban jurgenson, etc. Even further along this spectrum are patronage watches from folks like Kari, Smith, or dufour.
Finally there's ultra high complications. Greubel Forsey is the obvious prototype here, but there's also ultra high complications from jlc, VC, van Cleef, bregeut, and any number of other small shops.
Liam Wilson
All my Vostoks have good hand alignment and all have crap lume

Landon Ortiz
>chronos
think you might mean cronus lad
Lucas Reyes
you shut your whore mouth
Nathan Brooks
Chronos!=Chronus
Chronos is the personification of time, whereas Chronus is a titan associated with the harvest and shit.
Caleb Martinez
Fuck, I wrote Chronus instead of Cronus. I'll get my spelling straight, you can work on your mythology.
Colton Howard
How about now?
Ethan Baker
What are some good, possibly smaller, vostok watches with a non metal strap?
Landon Peterson
What is the case made of? If it has a high enough copper content it might look interesting post-oxidation.
>all-ceramic bezel >sapphire with AR coating >steel has Diashield coating >dial looks like that?? (pic related) >bracelet quality and mechanism miles better than on an MM300
Jose Lopez
Spend a little more and get a square G-Shock.
Blake Myers
I'd say a Tudor Black Bay or maybe a Grand Seiko, but that's just my own persona tastes.
Henry Cruz
Too bad none of this became true.

Camden Miller
Which Seiko 5s have hacking?
Isaac Kelly
>paying that much for a watch to wear it on your hand, and not even adjust the bracelet Why the hell do people do this?

>tfw dug my Orient Marshall out and remember how much I love how it looks
Camden Bell
>WATER RESIST I wish Orient would stop fucking up.
Nicholas Ramirez
They changed it to "Water Resistant" for faggots like you
David Jenkins
That's even worse. It should be on the caseback, not the dial.
John Fisher
I really don't like the number font on the newer explorers. Prefer the old font.
Noah Parker
Probably one of my favorite steel watches of all time. The best is the early 60's 1016 that just says swiss on the bottom. no ts or numbers. Gilt dials kill me.
Jacob Long
I would already own an Explorer if it weren't for the fucking paragraph on the dial.
Henry Thomas
Yeah it is a shame. The watch is so perfectly simple and they do ruin what would be a beautiful dial with way too much text.
Tyler Carter
I have the same gripe with Tudor.
Angel Harris
The older Explorers with painted indices are beautiful too but they're just too old and crusty now. They're expensive and just not suited to being daily wearers, the 114270 has a sapphire crystal and a modern movement and lume that isn't faded.
5 lines of text isn't even that bad for a Rolex, unfortunately.
Ethan Martinez
I am about to etch a blank copper dial i have for a 2824. I will fill the etchings with lume. What design should i use? rectangular, square, Arabic numerals? Any ideas? The etchings have to be relatively large and simple so they can be hand filled with lume.
Alexander Robinson
Slightly on topic for horology, if you want a good story podcast then watch s-town It's about a reporter who goes to a small town in Alabama to investigate a murder with the help of a local crazy fucker interested in timepieces
