Consumer technology, like smartphones? To the trash. It's all gone so wrong.

is there a properly typed non-OCR derived ebook of the manifesto anywhere? the ones on archive.org suck

its heading right there

Exactly as this man predicted.

How can harnessing human bodies output more energy than nuclear or even renewables? The robots would've just exterminated all of us.
Stupid as fuck plot from those retard tranny brothers.

Its heading the wrong fucking way.
The more i see politics and corporations exploit it the more i feel that i want to become a luddite.

original script idea was AI farming people as dsp/copocessors for preprocessing of stimuli for the actual AIs.

focus grouping showed that people didn't get that so they switched it to straight up energy.

people were just too retarded for the actually pretty sophisticated original plot, working title “The Mturk”

We already know mate
>automation
>androids
>a.i

I think they're readable, just mind some of the typos. Also I hope you know the caps are not mistakes but are his replacement for italics because he couldn't do italics.

they all look like shit on my kindle

What format would you prefer?

mobi

PDF?

If it's up to market forces, likely we're already seeing it's final destination in Farmville and Tinder.

no. kindles are fucking terrible with pdfs

Just print the text, it would be more authentic that way.

I remember reading the pdf on Kindle and it wasn't too bad.

SINGULARITY

>live life as a solitary hermit
>be in relative peace with your chosen way of life
>society drags you out and coerces you into wageslavery and forced human interaction

How is this ok?

>Reading Industrial Society and It's Future on a Kindle

But the implications of these things... That's the fucked up bit. Will the economy collapse when most people start to get replaced by automation?
Would you like to live in a future where machines are smarter than humans?
Will humanity continue to progress towards singularity or will human nature get the upper hand and make technological society collapse?

Nope.
Wherever it is heading, i will be to old and physically incapable to care by then.

Let`s find out.

A "solitary hermit" that regularly burglarized shit.

What's he backstory on this?

Well Kazcynski does lay out nicely that societal adoption of a technology has negative repercussions(for example breathing in automobile fumes or having to bear the noise or the destruction of nature) but even for the individual who abhors these ills it makes sense to drive a car because of the added convenience and the fact that his individual car contributes very little to the problem. Same goes for a kindle.

i'm an "ideas man"

A hermits got to eat, he literally had no possessions of his own.

>be some guy in Maine
>decide to live innawoods at 20 years of age
>gather food and other materials from nearby houses
>scare local people
>get caught after 27 years of doing so
>have to choose between getting a job, or getting the book
>get job from brother
>rest is history

He constantly stole shit from other people to survive, if he would've grown his own stuff and hunted no one would've cared but he was a lazy fucker and even his teeth all decayed from all the trash food he stole.

Get out, Sam

>hunting
>without permit

>trying to survive
>on government land

That`s 20 years in sing sing, scumbag!

man, I thought it was hard to believe that Kevin fucking Rose would be the most successful out of all the Screen Savers and Attack of the Show people-- but then he lost that title to Olivia Fucking Munn
Olivia fucking MUNN
how far can one man fall?

>Would you like to live in a future where machines are smarter than humans?
What do you even mean by that? A future where a machine acts like a super intelligent human is very far away, if not a sci-fi pipe dream entirely. A future in which machines controlled by AI techniques are better at specific tasks than people will definitely happen, hell it's already here in some cases. You can't apply the notion of "smart" to these things though, since they're literally just machines, it makes no sense. I wouldn't particularly mind a future in which machines are better than me at certain tasks, I mean they already are in certain kinds of work.

and people still didn't get it! I had a teacher once who thought the real-world parts were on another planet

sometimes
then I realize I can never know, the twists and turns are too hard to predict other than "stuff will be more efficient"

It's heading to suck your last drop of blood unless you start killing politicians.

Nah, I'm of the opinion that the whole of this unsustainable sort of living will fail once humanity depletes most of the natural resources. Most of humanity's efforts currently go toward fueling hedonistic consumerism, rather than coming up with actual solutions that would ensure progress and long term survival, like conquering space. After resources are depleted shits gonna hit the fan and humanity will revert to the way things were 200-300 years ago.

I kinda doubt most resources can be that easily depleted, more likely the quality of people will dip dramatically, while population will grow and shit will just become unsustainable. One world favela, here we come!

This is not an issue in India.
:^)

I have no mouth but I must scream

Well what about when machines get so smart they essentially make the whole of humanity obsolete. Hell, something like 50% the job market can be automated already, with current technology. What happens when man becomes subordinate to machine in terms of overall ability and intellect? The best case scenario in this sort future man becomes a sort of house pet, where all his needs are fulfilled by technology. Worst case humanity is exterminated because it does not have any purpose anymore.

Well, you see as consumption and level or 'basic' necessities(like every single person having a computer in their pocket) increase so do the number of resources that are irreplaceable. For example electronics manufacturing relies heavily on rare earth metals, whereas 50 years ago humanity could have lived fine without them(though it needed oil, like it still does now). Second point is, for the collapse of the economy it only suffices that resources are depleted to such a level where using them isn't economical anymore. I agree that the accelarating decline in the quality of people will have a major effect.

>What happens when man becomes subordinate to machine in terms of overall ability and intellect?
Machines are tools, you cannot become subordinate to a tool. You're not going to become subordinate to a self-driving car or a pizza delivery bot because that is completely nonsensical. AI like you see in fiction, as in something which is basically like a virtual, super-intelligent person is a pipe dream and has essentially nothing to do with the state of AI/Machine Learning as it exists today, thus applying the concept of intellect to AI is also nonsensical.

Automation WILL have the ability to eat into the job market significantly though, but that's an entirely different matter. That's more like the Industrial Revolution rather than conscious AI taking over humanity.

>obsolete
Obsolete in the "unemployable" sense or what? Society will change and we'll live through it. Rather than worrying about Cortana subjugating you, you should instead worry about what the actual people at the top who control all the technology want to do because if there's any dystopia on the horizon, that's sure as fuck where it's going to come from.

I unironically believe that tech one day is going to get to the point where life is devoid of all meaning, so humanity will spend most of it in some sort of VR environment, where everyone is successful inside of but total unaccomplished unskilled losers outside of it. It's already sort of happening with VR porn to a certain extent, pillow talk ASMR videos are still in the non VR format, but soon will be. There are tonnes of people who are really successful in MMORPGs and such, but total losers in real life.

>A hermits got to eat, he literally had no possessions of his own
Not having something doesn't juatify stealing it, regardless of how much you need it.

fuck you

We understand that you don't think it will happen anytime soon, but he's talking about a (perhaps hypothetical) future in wich there will be a supersmart human-like AI.

What would happen to humanity in that scenario?

WaPo WaPo WaPo

Will technology erase manlets?

This. Exactly. Made-in-China-shouldn't-even-have-shipped garbage. Almost all of it.

Note that Africa has the highest, or nearly the highest, fertility rates at the moment.

Original script was Plato's cave. From that point onwards you're supposed to understand everything about the story is just part of an allegory.

Isn't there supposed to be a water shortage in Africa to go along with this?

Bump

Nah, I disagree and I do think that humanity is becoming more and more subordinate to technology(to tools as you call it) because the needs of humanity always end up secondary to the needs of technological society. For example it is evident that most young people would benefit greatly and would be much happier if they got more exercise and spent more time outdoors. But this human need conflicts with the needs of the system: technological society requires lots of human technicians to expand and maintain it, so the aforementioned young people are pushed towards the STEM meme where they study hunched over for half of their lives. You can see this pattern play out in every facet of society where this conflict between human needs and the needs of the system is brought up.

Best case scenario? People don't fall for DUDE AI EVIL OVERLORD LMAO and will create AI that is more or less an ideal caretaker. Probably something like post-scarcity scenario, except AI communicates with people and sorta-kinda ideal democracy emerges, because AI will analyse all people's wishes and wills independently and will simply do what humanity collectively wants. We'd end up dependent on AI, but there's no reason for it to mishandle or abuse us. There's no point in creating such AI.

>We'd end up dependent on AI, but there's no reason for it to mishandle or abuse us. There's no point in creating such AI.
Except for people who want to control the population.
Power-hungry people always existed and will always exist, and you can bet there will be people trying to create such machines that they can control, in order to have the ultimate power over humanity.

>hey dude, here, have some perfect machine servants
>LETS ENSLAV PEEPOOL BECUZ WE EVIL
I'm not negating that there are some concerns, but such people, unless they're really stupid or petty, will have no reason to try to control everybody else if robots can do everything for them. They can GTFO to space or remote island and will still have unlimited power over their surroundings, much greater than if they ruled over people. Power inflation, if you wish.

Well even your proposed best case scenario doesn't sound that great when you think about it. In this sort of post-scarcity scenario where humans are being cared for by some 'benevolent' AI human dignity or striving for anything better would be over and obsolete. Humanity at that point would itself be obsolete and redundant, humans reduced to house pets. This would mean the complete abolition of the aristocratic principle of nature and the whole of mankind would end up looking like the people in Wall-e. Death would be preferable to this scenario in my view.

Are you seriously having trouble imagining how can some powerful people want to have more power than they need?

Also, the scenario you're imagining requires singularity.level AI and post-scarcity to come all at once, which is retarded because it will be gradual (especially the part where society adjusts to the new way).
What will happen is that while we still live in the current society, AIs start rolling out, and powerful people (namely governments and corporations) will start to control it right away. Maybe for power thirst, or maybe because they think it's better to inject their own morals to create what they think would be a better world.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
If there's a chance that somebody could end up owning or controlling these machines, then it's 100% guaranteed there will be some people who would try and do that.

>They can GTFO to space or remote island and will still have unlimited power over their surroundings, much greater than if they ruled over people.
That would require having infinite space (because few would want to live outside the earth, at least for the first few centuries where extraterrestrial human settlements get nice enough), and since we don't have infinite island to have "unlimited power" over, we'd still have to share the land with other humans.

You sound like a 12 year old who just learned about Project Venus and started jerking off about how great the world would be if it was like that, not considering that the chances of it becoming actually like that are pretty slim considering there's always some asshole fucking things up for personal gain.

>LETS ENSLAV PEEPOOL BECUZ WE EVIL
It's more like:
>Let's enslave people because it gets us more power and resources (not everything will be unlimited obviously, like things that can't be multiplied such as unique artifacts and land).

Just like someone 1000 years ago would think about what we have now and say that since in the 21st century's first world we have infinite food, comfort and living your entire life without doing manual labor, we would just enjoy life and nobody would ever want more than they need.
It's complete bullshit and you know there'll always be someone who would take the world if they could.

Just because you (or even most people) would be content with having the good life that everyone has, it doesn't mean other people won't want more.

Thing about the good life is that you don't need any of this modern shit for it. No one NEEDED a computer or a car or a subscribtion to spotify or netflix to be happy in the past. People would communicate the old-fashioned wayby talking to each other, would walk when they needed to travel and could play music or sing themselves and entertain themselves that way. They were much happier than we are, despite their hardships. People were content with growing old, unlike today. Why is that? Because life is less fulfilling today, despite the material excess modernity offers us, we are worse or than our forefathers.

The only thing left to do is ruling... Hypothetically AI could leave some work to be done for humans so that they don't go insane, create artificial work for us to do or leave some jobs dealing with human interaction to humans. Or AI could start altering us to cope with this state. AI would be basically an omnipotent god without own will to do anything, it'd do what humans tell it to do, because it's made to do so and because it doesn't have anything better to do.
I'm not sure if singularity and post-scarcity would come at once, but advanced AI could create robots capable of doing human work. If then robots worked for people, we'd come to that post-scarcity society... Eventually.
I don't understand how we would need infinite space in my scenario. If we have self-replicating robots (and so, self-creating power) those people in power wouldn't need anyone. They can create their own servants.
...What is project venus?
In my scenario enslaving people doesn't get you anything. Need hands to work? More bots. Need resources? Use bots to exploit sources otherwise unprofitable or just take away somebody else's resources. What would they need people for?

I do have to concede that power corrupts. The only way to avert elites enslaving everybody would be to make everyone have robots/AI, that self-replicating power, so that power hyperinflates and nobody has more power over anyone than anybody else. We need Stallman to meme open source AI and robots to reality.

And what if I don't want to be one of this AIs housepets? Do I get to go on the primitive reservation? What you're talking about sounds a lot like Huxley's Brave New world in the way it deals with human nature. Altering humanity so it's content with it's unnatural predicament. Nah I'm not down with that, because such a world would have no place for human dignity or freedom, so the whole of modernity needs to fail before we get to that point.

But at no point in the transition between the hard life and the "peak good life", and the nonfulfilling life of today, the entire human species stopped wanting more.
This was always the case and will always be.

>In my scenario enslaving people doesn't get you anything. Need hands to work? More bots. Need resources? Use bots to exploit sources otherwise unprofitable or just take away somebody else's resources. What would they need people for?
Are you seriously talking about literal enslaving people?
Like with whips and shackles?
I'm talking about having political and economic power over them.

>I do have to concede that power corrupts. The only way to avert elites enslaving everybody would be to make everyone have robots/AI, that self-replicating power, so that power hyperinflates and nobody has more power over anyone than anybody else. We need Stallman to meme open source AI and robots to reality.
This will never happen for the same reasons FOSS is not happening right now.

>I'm not sure if singularity and post-scarcity would come at once, but advanced AI could create robots capable of doing human work. If then robots worked for people, we'd come to that post-scarcity society... Eventually.
And in the meantime?
You think that people won't exploit the situation to gain power over this technology WHILE it's being developed and implemented?
You think government (imperfect and corruptible) won't start to regulate them?

>I don't understand how we would need infinite space in my scenario.
Because you talk like everyone will have their own island to have control over. There aren't enough remote islands (or even big enough lots of land) for everybody to do that.

>If we have self-replicating robots (and so, self-creating power) those people in power wouldn't need anyone. They can create their own servants.
I'm not talking about them literal servants. I'm talking about them having power over people the way a dictator has power over their population.
In a world where AI starts to govern the entire world, those who control said AI will end up controlling everything.

>...What is project venus?
It's a fantasy that a guy named Jacque Fresco had a few decades ago, where he imagines a sci-fi utopia like the one you're talking about.
Watch this if you're interested:
youtube.com/watch?v=5zn8MRKOskw

Well, wanting more maybe not, but needing more... That was a long time ago. Also soon we will not be able to physically have more because the Earth has a limited potential to support the shit that humanity has produced and continues to produce.

And that won't happen anytime soon, because after the singularity started to happen and this supercool technology starts to get implemented, it would take centuries to build new societies on other planets that people will want to move to.

In the short term, weaponised quadcopters will pose some very interesting problems.

I'm saying we're not gonna get that far. We'll back to the 1700s in terms of use of technology at the end of the 21st century because we'll have to return to a more sustainable way of living due to the exhaustion of Earth's resources that enable the current rates of population growth and consumption.

I don't think so.
We'll just find other ways to produce what we want, and what we won't be able to get anymore will just be forgotten in a couple of decades, but in general things will only go towards the future.

There are always new sustainable ways of producing things that get discovered all the time, but nobody puts them in practice because they're not as economically viable as the currently used ways.
Once the current ways are exhausted, we'll use those more expensive ones.

We'll never go back to living like in the past, unless there's something that literally forces us to do it (such as a nuclear world war or worldwide natural disaster).

Which country do you think is going to voluntarily return to horse and buggy technology first?

>voluntarily

Those that still have to adopt them.

You know which ones.

>reading the greatest technological manifesto ever
>on a fucking kindle
>twolaughingsluts.jifpg3

With globalisation and how the world economy is all the more interconnected I'm gonna guess all of them though not voluntarily. Large swathes of the world, like the countries in Africa or India never did progress much beyond horse and buggy tier technology though.
And who's gonna buy the expensive stuff? The economy relies on plenty available to most people, you know 'bread and circuses' to maintain contentment. Once things start to get more scarce things are gonna start to break down pretty fast. And a lot of people will go back to living on the land when it becomes easier than working within the system.
Also as you rightly point put, it might be accelarated by some catastrophic event, like a large war, biotechnology or AI related incident, runaway global warming or a natural one like the Yellowstone supervolcano going pop, a giant solar flare or a meteorite strike.

>some years in the future
>99% of stuff is automated, robots are capable of producing even music and poems
>only humans who work are the CEOs
>there are no jobs, so there are no money
>all companies shut down since they can't sustain themselves since no one has a job
>we either die out completely or go back to the middle ages

What a great future

>And who's gonna buy the expensive stuff? The economy relies on plenty available to most people, you know 'bread and circuses' to maintain contentment. Once things start to get more scarce things are gonna start to break down pretty fast. And a lot of people will go back to living on the land when it becomes easier than working within the system.
The world isn't going to deplete all of earth's resources at once.
They'll be gradually phased out one by one, and replaced by their (perhaps inferior) alternative.
We won't fall into post-apocalyptic famine in a year.
Everything will just go on as usual, and people will mostly have the same jobs and money they would've had without the depletion of those things.

>only humans who work are the CEOs
Why would they do work?

I meant the only humans who have a job.

Manage the robots.

But I think it's stupid anyway.
If we come to the point where everything is automated, I'm sure you'll be able to automate the CEO's decision taking skills.

Why would they work, if everything is automated. What would be their incentive to do a job if everyone else gets to be a NEET and do nothing.

For the same reason why rich people work when they could just retire and live in the absolute luxury for generations.

Some people like to work, some people want to earn more, some people get bored without some sort of routine activity, etc.

Numerous psychological studies show that most humans aren't wired to live like NEETs all their lives, and end up falling into depression.
We're wired to work towards a purpose.

Also, read "The richest man in Babylon".
It's a short but very interesting book.
Particularly relevant to this discussion is the part where there's the rich respected guy who starts telling a story of when he was a slave.

> using your brain as a coprocessor
> but you're awake and doing stuff 16 hours a day
That's more complicated and just as retarded.

Maybe creating the Matrix to engage those human brains was a requirement for them to work in the first place, so it's better to have them waste most of their power on the Matrix (and use more humans to account for the smaller amount of processing power available to the machines) than to not engage them at all and have them not work.

Kind of like how the architect said that a "paradise" version of the Matrix didn't work because the human brains didn't accept it.

I hate that commie jew(i'm not even a Sup Forumstard or anti-semitic, but he's actually a jew) with a vengeance.
His promises are super vague(intentionally so at times. He can't say "i wanna abolish, division of labour, private property and do soviet style cybernetics" so he uses simplistic terms to appeal to the stupid masses.
"Yo man, what if there was like, no need for money and shit, because robots?
We would have everything we want, and people would be nice to each other, and shit")
He answers no questions, except tu quoques about "le ebul monetary system", and i've not seen a single number about how much resources would a typical person need in his new system, so someone could figure out if it's actually achievable.
Especially since his idiotic project has jack shit to show after half a century.
Not one robot, not one awesome building, or one line of code.
Not even "let's make basic necessities for 100 people with a linux server, some hidroponics and some arduinos as microcontrollers, and see if we come out with lesser resource consumption than if we just bought that shit"
I mean some random user on the other chan made some pretty cool economy central planning software in Java, which is interesting.
But mr. "I'm gonna save the fucking planet and turn it into a paradise" can't do even that, yet?
Fuck him and his project.
Hope it rots, now that Fresco is dead.

Well, you are right but the world economy and the way society is set up right now is still very fragile so depletion of say oil probably would have a serious impact on it and may even bring it down.

>Java
Sure, but I think skynet is written in JavaScript.

Almost all movies about AI are anthropocentric, as in, even if machines are an enemy of humanity they still give a fuck about us - Terminator, The Matrix and so on. It's dumb because it's inefficient.

Real AI will probably just use our economy to build what it wants and then fuck off right into space without us even realizing it ever existed.

Yeah, but oil won't be gone before its replacements become viable (which is happening quite fast), and there aren't many other scarce resources that pose the same risk.

What happens is that when we see that X important resource is drying up, we amp up the production and research for the alternatives, so that when extracting it isn't viable anymore we'd already be using the alternative.

For all i care, it could have been written in COBOL.
It's still something that's actually been done, and is kinda interesting.

And it's a 1000% more than what that TVP did, which is just making meh-ish documentaries propagandisation on the internet, and sucking Fresco's dick.
